It'll never happen, the prices will just keep going up. People just don't care enough to boycott.

But, on a happier note, I heard AMC will begin offering movie memberships soon. For $20 or $30 a month you get unlimited movies, limit of one per day. I'll sign up for that!

If only I could find a baby sitter that charged the same way...
2001-07-12 09:19:03 AM
Personally, I wouldn't mind paying so much if there wasn't so much crap comming out.
2001-07-12 09:26:57 AM
I'm confused. When we stop buying stuff because it gets too expensive it's called a boycott now? I thought it was just supply/demand/economics.
And, yes, I agree with PsiDefect, I've been to about 3 movies in the last year. 95% of them are crap.
2001-07-12 09:33:14 AM
Don't believe what they tell you. Watch more television.
2001-07-12 09:39:51 AM
Not only that but what is up with farking commercials. I sat through four when I saw 'The Mummy Returns'. One of which was for Clairol hair coloring dye.

Now, stupid ass me, but If the cinema is going out and soliciting companies to put commercials in front of an average audience of two hundred, who are held captive in dark room, don'tcha think that they ought to lower the farking price of the movie? It actually really insults me on a grand level that this is going on. Isn't that why TV is Free? Commercials?

Anyone who wants to drop their local theater a note about this, here are the biggies:

AMC Theaters:

Hoyt's Cinemas:

Regal Cinemas: Note, Regal didn't really have a separate section for general comments, so also feel free to call them at: 1-877-TELL-REGAL...It's free. And they love repeat callers.

Cineplex Odeon/Loews:

Anyway, I just get angry bout that.
2001-07-12 09:54:06 AM
i wonder if they're going to advertise mirc on that site, since you can just dl movies from there anyways..
2001-07-12 10:01:20 AM
Why don't they have a website for boycotting BAD movies?? I'd be first in line although that might be too subjective.
2001-07-12 10:17:13 AM
Fathom- That's just what I came here to talk about. Stole my thunder and took all my points: damn you. =)
2001-07-12 10:19:53 AM
Thank you Grasshopper, I'm glad I'm not the only one whose offended by that shiat.
2001-07-12 10:32:49 AM
95% of three movies is crap? That's difficult to believe. Does that mean that 0.016% of each movie isn't crap, or that 5% of one movie isn't crap?
2001-07-12 10:39:16 AM
I don't need a website to tell me that $10 is too much to go to the theater; I figured that out myself. Isn't it ironic that all the American theater companies are almost bankrupt?
2001-07-12 10:50:51 AM
It's not the price of the movie that pisses me off, it's what they charge for popcorn and a drink
2001-07-12 11:07:14 AM
I think the thread in here is the price is OK, it's just that the product is so bad. I have fallen asleep in movies lately. How much longer is the paying public going to be screwed by the movie industry. They fake reviews, and interviews to hype this shiat....and we fawn over a new movire like it's mom's teat and we are feeding. Hey stop going, I have.
2001-07-12 11:18:12 AM
I avoid going to movies unless there is something I *absolutely* want to see on a huge screen. I'm surprised people regularly have a movie date night when it comes out to about $30 with food/drinks.

There are so many more fun things to do on a date for $30.

Someday I will start dating again and prove that ;)
2001-07-12 12:36:38 PM
Not a bad idea in itself, but I would like to see it applied to gasoline retailers. Have a rotating weekly boycott (if people buy into the idea) of one (or better yet two) retailers and watch the panic. Gougers!
2001-07-12 12:48:47 PM
meh, the best thing to come out of the internet yet is Divx;-) and free movies.
2001-07-12 01:40:50 PM
I already boycot movies....I never go to the theatre.
2001-07-12 01:45:42 PM
I make my own movies.
(nudge, nudge, wink, wink, know what I mean?)
2001-07-12 02:34:04 PM
umm...this is stupid. around here, everywhere i go it's still $5 for a movie ticket, so i dont care. the yuppie farks in LA can pay for the $10 tickets, yet they want to biatch. WTF.

the only pricing problem i see is the price of the drinks, but its what they have to do to cover the humongous rental price of those movie reels nowadays. how about they complain about the money hungry movie companies?

the last movies i've seen were good, so i cant complain about that. i think these WeCanDoIt nuts should ShutTheHellUp.
2001-07-12 02:50:33 PM
wah wah wah this is america land of the free and i want everything for free because i deserve it.

i went to see final fantasy yesterday for 5.50
thats the same price as a lunch at McD's
that movie farkin ruled

if me and 200 other people went and made a movie for you over the course of half a year for 14 hours a day theres no way in hell id let you see it for under ohh... 100$

if anyone actually saw a movie just because a reviewer in rhode island said it made him nut his pants and you didnt like it..... who cares? where else can you go these days with a date where 20$ or so will give you something to do for 2 hours? well maybe bowling but thats about it.

letsee what else.
everyone else in the theatre hates em as much as you do
feel free to yell back at the screen rocky horror style.
2001-07-12 03:10:41 PM
Who gives a shiat about the price of movies? I think it's fair - darkened theater, great big screen, and you've got backup when you need to tell someone to shut the fark up.

Commercials? Ditch 'em. Show me trailers, that's it. I don't want to see that retarded ad for popcorn and Coke, either. Do they think I don't know they have popcorn and Coke in the lobby? Could I possibly have forgotten all about it in the 3 minutes between passing the refreshment stand and sitting down?

And let's get rid of that fake-ass "No outside food or drinks" rule. Do you really think I want to pay 4 bucks for a box of candy I can get for $1.50 at the grocery store next door? As long as munchies are overpriced at the movies, I will wear a jacket with huge pockets, even in the summertime (doesn't look as suspicious in Seattle as it did in Bakersfield, CA).

That was my cathartic rant for the day. Stay tuned for the next episode.

It always amazes me how people will get all worked up over movies. How critical you are! If only you would direct this energy towards issues that actually matter, use your brainpower to argue topics that affect peoples' lives.
Why waste all your intellectual power on such an easy target?
Movies are entertainment, folks...not life changing events. We seem to have developed this expectation that movies must fulfill us in some way emotionally and intellectually. What bullshi't! Movies are 90 minutes of eye candy (and sometimes ear candy). Finis.
2001-07-12 04:45:30 PM
heh. I haven't been in a theatre since the turn of the year. Granted our local place charged 6-8 bucks, I'd rather wait 5-6 months and watch the DVD from the comfort of my own godamned couch.
2001-07-12 04:48:30 PM
Grav8e, this is a discussion board. No discussion on here makes an ounce of difference in the real world, so you may as well discuss things that interest you.

As for boycotting movies, that is great for people that want to. I don't see your solution of arguing any point having more of an effect than actually doing something.

People just love to share their opinions, me included.
2001-07-12 05:17:53 PM
Grav8e: It always amazes me how worked up some people will get over another person's opinion. Why waste all your intellectua.. wait, that's your line.

I can't wait to see the Final Fantasy movie :)

Oh, and Buzz - I saw my first DivX movie recently, and wow, I was impressed ;) I finally got a hold of a copy of Escaflowne: A Girl in Gaea (which, even though some of the latter parts were only so-so, was overall a very good movie, with a nice permeating theme).

Anyone know what DivX compression is based on?

I think someone touched on this before but would not going to the movies be considered boycotting even if you usually didn't go in the first place? Today most movies are garbage and not worth my time. I agree with Lusipher785. If I really want to see a movie I'll wait for it to come out on DVD, rent it for $1.99 and watch it in my own home with a group of friends. We all save money that way as well.
2001-07-12 08:00:07 PM
Rei: this is the DivX code hacked in perl:

2001-07-12 08:01:12 PM
farking filters caught it 8-)
2001-07-12 08:44:43 PM
Awww... too bad, I always like a good piece of code or a code-related joke ;)

Yeah, I know, I'm a geek, so sue me ;)

Joshg: Does that mean that 0.016% of each movie isn't crap?
Ack, sorry, what I meant was 95% of the movies that come out are crap, not that 95% of the three I've seen this year were crap. Memento & Shrek were both good. The Center of The World was just weird (my gf dragged me to that one).
And yes, screw those stupid ads and kill that goddamn, devil spawned Pepsi girl.
2001-07-13 04:20:51 AM
Uuhm, don't you people decide to which movies you go?? Therefor being aware you will pay overgraded prices for the sthuff at the theater and just the ticket?? It's all free choice. If you don't like it, wait for the DVD (rip).

(Contains useless ranting) I'll just be waiting for Lord of the Rings and Star WarsII. If the script is as good as i have read it, it'll be fine, unless they fark it up like The Phantom Menace. Then a young version of George Lucas will go to heaven and the older one will go to hell. Some people should be punished for making TPM. Can't China execute some more people in a statement against it?? They usually do it, and cover it up by saying they are with the Fulan Gong (sp) but in reality... (Ending useless ranting)
2001-07-13 05:42:19 AM
If the theater price is such an issue why not wait 6mos and rent it for five days @ $3? Just a thought....
