It would have fallen apart anyway.

Or do they only make cheap crap for export to Wal*Mart?

Maybe they shot one of the MLB's satellites.

I find it amusing that the U.S. is calling for ANYONE to be more transparent in their policies. we are such a farking hypocrite nation...*sigh*

If they keep blowing up all of their satellites they won't have any left! Or is this the same one?

What the crap... this happened in January? And it's just NOW getting news on it?

The U.S. is extremely transparent in its policies. The fact that we don't mean to be is another issue.

well i think it's col as hell. i'd be first in line to walk up to the chinese, tell them that, and ask for a demo and possibly some directions to make my own.

Nah, it just took em this long to formulate a noncomittal, possible feeling of upsetment that may or may not go on the record as being of any merit.

I wonder how long it would take the USA to take over China in a full ground war.

2007-05-12 03:19:38 AM
China would kick our ass silly in a ground war IN China. Their military is about 3-4x the size of ours.

It would be no contest (unless we unloaded all our nukes and just made china into a large sheet of glass)

In response to this satellite shooting, Presients Bush released a statement to China's Ambassador: "My honey my baby don't put my love upon no shelf; I say don't hand me no lines and keep your hands to yourself."

eqtworld: I wonder how long it would take the USA to take over China in a full ground war.

Including reserve forces, China has an army of around 3,055,000, the US has 2,270,000, with mostly equal amounts of ground military hardware and equipment. So, ground warfare, the US'd most likely lose. Get naval and air, and the US is pretty overwhelming. Of course, in any case, military action against China also gets Russia, North Korea, Iran and a few other SE Asian nations involved, on China's side.

If there's an unwinnable war in the world, that would be the one.

/Neat. India, Russia and both Koreas have bigger armies than the US.

Old news... ABC is not talking about the new JFK revelations by the guy who run the operation, or the revelations about the OKC bombing... or the child kidnapping ring made by Halliburton or the CPS grabbing kids... or the borders wide open... or the illegal aliens being above the law...

This country needs a GOOD SOURCE of information on TV and in the papers.

The Chinese are simply taking pre-emptive steps to defend their Homeland. In the hands of Terrists, that satellite could have been used for Evil.

I don't think the Chinese and the Russians have cared much for each other for awhile now, but I do agree on the Iran and North Korea point.

big pebble: I don't think the Chinese and the Russians have cared much for each other for awhile now

This is true, but Russia has been siding with China on the UNSC lately, and the US is a bigger threat to Russian interests than China. Besides, they export a lot of oil to China, if I'm remembering correctly.

lolmao666: This country needs a GOOD SOURCE of information on TV and in the papers.

Can't help you with the papers, but if you've got digital cable or satellite, you should have BBC-A. That at least gets you BBC World News in the morning and afternoon.

I personally recommend watching Al-Jazeera English. Most non-biased news channel there is. Unfortunately US distribution is practically nil(obviously), but they stream the channel on their website and mirror most stories on their youtube channel.

No American invasion fleet would get within 200 miles of China without being nuked out of the water. No Chinese invasion fleet would within 200 miles of Hawai'i without getting nuked out of the water.

This "looming war with China" some people have been spouting off about will never happen in terms of an invasion of one country by the other. You can't invade a country that has nukes.

Now, China could probably make a pretty bloody go at Taiwan, but they won't be able to hold it against our Navy. I imagine Taiwan would turn into a massive Okinawa type battle, with the Taiwanese dug in and holding on with their teeth. Not going to crack that nut with American subs and bombers wrecking your supply unless you throw down some nukes.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: The American military is very, very good at moving in fast and destroying everything in its way. What we aren't good at, as we've seen in the past few decades, is becoming stationary and holding territory. If China invades Taiwan, I doubt a single American boot would hit the ground, but our Pacific fleet would be going around like a tornado in a trailer park.

ignite ice: What the crap... this happened in January? And it's just NOW getting news on it?

Nah, it was in Popular Science right after it happened. They are testing their ability to hit other near earth orbit satellites with ANYTHING because it will cripple the satellite. We're concerned because if they can hit their own, they can hit ours.

This is not new technology. It's all pretty basic, and we've already covered it. What we are worried about is them taking out geostationary satellites we're using for GPS before we can upgrade the system. They'd have to take out three or four before we would be hurting, but since we didn't factor in "external threats" when they were launched, this is a problem.

The best thing we have going for us on the GPS front is that the EU couldn't get it together enough to make their own, and they are in the process of dissolving the original agreement because of too much biatching. China doesn't have the space infrastructure to make their own, and they were counting on the EU to provide competing services.

With the death of the EU project, China is still using the same service we set up for all of their military positioning tests. Should they decide to forgo GPS completely, then the only way to beat someone in a land war will be to take out the GPS capacity on the other side.

Hence, hit a satellite with a dumb object. Then hit another one. And another. Eventually, you reach a point where your enemy is on the same plane as you.

2007-05-12 04:50:42 AM
Jubeebee: You think they would be dumb enough to attack the old way? What about sending chinese operatives in mexico posing as escaping the regime then infiltrate the USA for 10 years? With over 2-3 millions illegal aliens every year they would be able to overwhelm the US in little to no time.

Along if they pay the mexico mafia to go along with them so then they can have their Atzlan after the victory.

Sorry, but if I would be China, I would do that if I planned to invade the USA. Much wiser. Use the only advantage China have... NUMBERS.

2007-05-12 05:26:31 AM
Meh. There's a lot bigger things to worry about. China's military strategy is to keep its territories politically stable in order invest more on its economy.

The Bush military strategy is to make Iraq politically unstable and then pay into Iraq's economy with a military campaign we have to pay China back for funding with compounded interest--thus also helping invest in China's economy.

I doubt China even cares if it owns nothing but a few space missiles and some guys wielding sticks. China's already indirectly funding our sophisticated bunker bombs anyway.

2007-05-12 05:33:53 AM
If you think China needs to go to war with the US you're displaying the kind of thinking that landed you assholes in a ground war in Iraq.

China doesn't need to attack the US, it already dominates you economically and you have nothing it wants except millions of customers.

May I suggest the BBC website? The Americas section of the world page is quite extensive and even includes bonus information about those other pesky Americas...

Go China gogogogo, mighty China ranger gonna kick you in the nads.

You and your friends could knock apart a satellite with a million dollars and pretty simple to acquire ladar equipment. If you really wanted to. The rocket tech is all off the shelf, it's just the locational data that someone needs to actually hit it.

The only reason that this is still news is that people are still pissed off with all the f*cking junk that seems to be building up in orbit that nobody is paying any attention to.
Maybe China is interested in this tech because it actually wants to explore space, unlike America which is just waiting for the Rapture.

Or maybe the king can of Bud is giving me bad information, regardless, I'm totally on China's side in the 'how to manage a Civilization' vs. 'The West', or whatever the American talking point is today. 5000 years of history vs... 300 or whatever? Someone needs to pull their head out of their ass.

/probably me

Would you care to explain how shooting down satellites in orbit furthers a space-exploration agenda?

/Space exploration is worthless anyway
//Telescopes give us a lot more information, faster, and cheaper
///Nearest star would take us 400,000 years to get to anyhow

China introduces capitalism, gets more taxes, builds bigger and better army. I'm not going in tin-foil hat territory am I, yet?

nashbridges-

Our GPS sats aren't in GEO. They're MEO birds. And the Chinese ASAT is only capable in LEO- so most of the communications and GPS birds are safe.

What's not safe in LEO are imaging satellites. You take out the right spy satellite at the right time with an ASAT and it would make it hard to see them making a quick run from the mainland across the straits to Taiwan.

That's the whole idea here- not threatening GPS- but threatening our ability to counter a cross-strait attack.

They already have. It was called Vietnam.

China has every right to practice shooting down American Spy Satellites. We'll just have to make a stealth satellite, that's all!

Space man

Imaging is LEO you say? Fantastic info, thank you.

I have some South American drug lords and guerrilas in the Middle-East who will be pleased to know this information...in the story I'm writing...hehe

nashBridges: Nah, it was in Popular Science right after it happened. They are testing their ability to hit other near earth orbit satellites with ANYTHING because it will cripple the satellite. We're concerned because if they can hit their own, they can hit ours.

Well considering that the US National Space Policy: "rejects anything that limits the U.S. power in space, and asserts the right to deny access to space to anyone hostile to U.S. interests." I'd say the Chinese are well within their rights to challenge that policy.

This is not new technology. It's all pretty basic, and we've already covered it. What we are worried about is them taking out geostationary satellites we're using for GPS before we can upgrade the system.

GPS is not geostationary. The satellites are in medium earth orbit and make two orbits per day.

The best thing we have going for us on the GPS front is that the EU couldn't get it together enough to make their own, and they are in the process of dissolving the original agreement because of too much biatching. China doesn't have the space infrastructure to make their own, and they were counting on the EU to provide competing services.

The EU is taking over funding the Galileo project, so the project is hardly dead.

you have nothing it wants except millions of customers

Take that millions away and you have the real china, that still has a technology base to make nothing more than perhaps cheap motorscooters. All China has is millions of unskilled/semiskilled laborers with no rights, such laborers can be found in any country whose dictator can be bribed to look away.

I'm a Chinese satellite, so I'm really getting a kick out of these replies...

The USA should just STFU.

We have technology which can destroy satellites... what a hypocritical nation. I want to puke.
