#8 belongs to DEI. I wonder if he would be able to use #3 with the new team. I think Childress still has the right to use #3. Maybe he would give it up for Jr.

2007-05-10 02:44:25 AM
I think Jr. would flourish under Hendrick. w00t!

2007-05-10 03:42:52 AM
RCR still has the #3, and it is on the #29 every week, upper right of the 9.

Junior would be the only one the fans would let use the #3, otherwise Jeff Gordons Taladega shower would be viewed as a few spots of rain before the storm really hits. Some poor sucker would be either crashed or left alone at that track if they used #3.

If Jr moves on then so will the crew chief, the sponsors etc, DEI might have the work shops but you also need a lot of $$$ these days to run anything seriously in Nextel Cup.

Haters go elsewhere, we don't belittle you in threads about your sport so if you don't have anything to contribute, you don't need to post here. This is big news in NASCAR. Not shocking but somewhat surprising given the rumor that DEI had offered the 51% ownership Dale Jr. had requested. I guess the family relationship is so poisoned at this point that he wants to try something different.

He will do okay with Hendrick Engines...

2007-05-10 09:17:19 AM
He can take Bud with him to his new team, but DEI has rights to the 8. I bet he drives the No.3 Budweiser Chevy Impala next year.

The Hendrick engines will certainly help. He won't be anywhere near the same situation as Michael Waltrip. He's not entering completely new territory like Toyota did this season.

2007-05-10 09:34:08 AM
Mikey's biggest failure was over-extending his team. He was in no position to be running a 3 car team this soon. The crap at Daytona just compounded the problem to the point that he hasn't run a race since.

I'm a fan of his, but at this point I think Mikey should just hang it up and be team owner only. The money put into his non-racing cars every week would be better off being put into the 00 and 44 to make them more competitive.

2007-05-10 09:41:16 AM
If this happens, DEI will be out of racing in a year or so. Who cares if it's DEI, when DE Jr. isn't racing for them? I'm sure they'll win lots of races with, say, Sterling Marlin or Jeff Green driving for DEI.

2007-05-10 09:54:07 AM
Beacuse they're winning alot of races w/Jr.on board right now...

Dumb-Ass-Monkey: Mikey's biggest failure was over-extending his team. not being a good driver

1) Toyota is crap this season. I can't figure out how for the life of me that Reutimann is doing as good as a rookie can do in Nextel and you have drivers with some experience and skills like Mikey, Dale Jarrett, and others consistently failing to qualify.

(does this mean that Reutimann is just a really good driver with crap equipment?)

2) The big news beyond Junior leaving is taking Truex with him. That is seriously scorching the earth for DEI.

3) Junior running his own team is always what he wanted. With Hendrick cars, two of the more popular/marketable drivers, wow. That's a major combination.

Well he's not going to Hendrick, they already have 4 cars and they would have to boot someone. They have Gordon, Johnson, Busch, and Mears, meaning if they were really serious they would boot Mears, but I think he's under contract. Also, if it was publicized that Mears was getting booted so Jr could take his spot, I doubt he would take the offer.
I'd like to see him run for RCR (he could be #3) or Joe Gibbs(Teammates with Stewart and Hamlin).

If Richard Childress doesn't want to field a 4th full time car (his 3 are each doing at least decent), smart money would be on The Coach dumping Yeley and putting Jr. at that team. That team has won a championship.

2007-05-10 11:57:49 AM
Prediction:

Yeley's out, Jr. is driving the #18 Budweiser Chevrolet next year.

Smoke, Hamlin and Jr. would be enough to knock Rainbow Boy, his evil clone and the whinier of the Busch boys down a notch or two.

For all of the haters, suck it! Nascar is huge...

With roots as regional entertainment in the Southeastern U.S., NASCAR has grown to become the second most popular professional sport in terms of television ratings inside the U.S., ranking behind only the National Football League. Internationally, NASCAR races are broadcast in over 150 countries. It holds 17 of the top 20 attended sporting events in the U.S., and has 75 million fans who purchase over $3 billion in annual licensed product sales. These fans are considered the most brand-loyal in all of sports, and as a result, Fortune 500 companies sponsor NASCAR more than any other sport. However, so far in 2007, NASCAR has seen empty seats at many races for the first time, and television ratings are down considerably from 2006.

Yes, I do think I'm cool because I can Cut N' Paste from Wikipedia...

/Has never watched a complete race ever
//Doesn't hate Nascar, just can't sit down and watch a whole race because of my ADD
///Loves the ESPN Busch series Nascar commercials with the drivers in a DMV class.
////"Do you know why you're here? I like to go fast. That's what I'm talking about brother, You, out." Can't stop laughing with that one...

DisplacedTexan: Yeley's out, Jr. is driving the #18 Budweiser Chevrolet next year.

I can see Interstate Batteries getting out of Nascar ever since Gibbs threw most of his support behind Stewart, effectively abandoning Bobby after his 2000 Nextel win.

Yeley is just a stopgap. He was keyed up to win in the tent at Texas, then wiped out before he even finished the first lap.

/not saying he's a joke, but that's just sad.

2007-05-10 12:31:11 PM
I had the press conference on, and Junior says where he ends up will depend on what team can offer him the most personal satisfaction, being reasonably sure that any super-team can match anyone else's dollar amount. He's not too keen on driving the #3. Martin Truex is NOT his siamese twin and will have to make his own choices and his own deals. Driving a Cup car for his own JR Motorsports would be his LAST resort.

Once Jr leaves DEI, do you think the hail of beercans on that team will make the Jeff Gordon incidents look like a light sprinkle?

2007-05-10 12:32:38 PM
Stretch_8 Think of all the #8 tattoo's that will have to be re-done.

They might just have to add another 8. The most likely scenario right now is that he forms his own Cup organization and buys the 88 from Yates after they merge with DEI at the end of the year, as the 88 has been on the verge of folding for several years now.

One thing that might be an obstacle in Junior going to Gibbs is Gibbs' views on putting an alcohol sponsor on one of his cars. That's a bigger deal to him than some might think.

2007-05-10 12:39:51 PM
AuntiAnxiety Driving a Cup car for his own JR Motorsports would be his LAST resort.

That was said in a roundabout way, but the one thing he repeated over and over was that the biggest factor in his decision was that it had to benefit JRM. He must've said that ten times. I think he's leaning heavily towards doing his own deal but is keeping his options open for a few more weeks in the event that someone offers him a deal that is too good to pass up.

He specifically said that he wanted to win. With a Toyota team, he would be lucky to make a race.
