Rush agrees with you. They call it the Sickness.

"C'mon... best bass player ever!"

I'd rank John Entwistle or Chris Squire or John Paul Jones or Holger Czukay (or some others) above him. Geddy's a magnificent technician, but the excessive busy-for-the-sake-of-being-busy nature of the bass is one of the reasons I'm not a Rush fan, even if I like quite a few of their songs and a number of their albums.

Stu Hamm.

Geddy is an awesome musician overall. I hear what you're saying about his bass lines, though. However, it's one of the things that makes Rush... Rush.

/The more that things change, the more they stay the same.

My ex-bandmates and I have been unsuccessfully trying to arrange Red Barchetta as a bluegrass tune for a while. It's more funny as a concept, I think.

Rush is back. The big hair, fake falsetto heavy metal group that made the 1980s so irrelevant musically sold 84,000 copies for Atlantic Records last week with a new album called "Snakes & Arrows." Never underestimate the low standards of the buying public, I guess. Journey, Poison, shoulder pads and perms shouldn't be too far behind at this rate.

I have to agree whole heartedly. I was so glad when the 90s came into their own with original musicians that could remix songs from this wasteland era with a bump and grind beat. It was great that they were able to make millions off of the covers of the originally worthless pieces of music.

It also good to hear this now that Disco is coming back to its rightful place that is should be in. Yup, the crap music of the 80s killed the awesomeness of disco. Nothing good from the 80s at all, nope, not a thing.

//I would not lean too hard on Fox over this, all gossip columnists are dipshiat tools.

Ah I see the old 'progressive band has no soul/heart/feeling' line being trotted out here.

Rush has plenty of feeling, perhaps you just don't have a high enough level of perception to understand it.

That sounds awesome. Have you heard 'The Gourds'? They do alot of that. They are actually a bluegrass band. Their version of Gin 'n Juice is farking hysterical.

"Someone tell the columnist 84.000 in first week sales isn't bad. Works out to gold status in six weeks."

If they keep it up, they'll surpass "Hotel California" in under six years! (They won't.)

Rush's appeal is that their music is challenging, but not inaccessible, to 15-year-olds who are just starting to construct their own notions of art and philosophy. It's okay for someone to like Rush as an adult, but if Rush is still their MOST FAVORITEST EVER band, that's a sign of stunted personal growth.

anyone who says that 80's music is irrelevant is a complete idiot. its probably one of the most relevant decades of music thus far. it's been 2000 that has been the irrelevant decade, dumbass.

Rush was the first band that made me appreciate the sonic qualities in music. viewing it not as disposable product of the moment, but as a timeless artform.

boy, do i miss those days. before the exploitation of the art.

Sick ppl. have always been with us; but lately we almost exclusively market to them. There has been a cultural shift toward exalting the worst members of society and their personality traits, violence, thuggery, ditzyness on the television... and then we scratch our heads wondering what to think about school shootings. Dude, in a society that is indifferent to low standards in the media and in people, the sociopaths aren't inclined to think twice about acting out. Duh!

WTF? Rush is emotionally lacking? Because they don't blather on about teenage heartache and 10 minute love affairs?

Time Stand Still and Distant Early Warning almost make me cry with the depth and authenticity of the lyrics.

Yes, that must be it. It can't be that I have listened to more prog rock and forgotten about it in my lifetime than you will ever know. I feel I'm fairly qualified to say here that yes, among the prog rock bands out there Rush is one of the LEAST emotional, and MOST stunted, lyrically speaking. And before you get all uppity and say well at least it's prog rock and not just music or something, that includes HAWKWIND. Anvils falling from the sky are more melodic and interesting than Hawkwind.

You might be amused to know that Charlie Watts once appeared backstage before a Rush show, introduced himself to Neil, and emphatically said, "I'm gonna be watching you!" Clearly he was giddy at the opportunity to do so.

Just something you should know if you're gonna use Charlie to bash Neil. I don't think Charlie would back you on that one.

Good to see so many FARKers are Rush fans. :)

FTFA: The big hair, fake falsetto heavy metal group that made the 1980s so irrelevant musically...

1.) Rush never had "big hair", as in the highly styled hair that people like Poison had. They did have long hair, but so did almost every other rock band of the time.

2.) I don't know what "fake" falsetto is, so I'll assume the auther simply meant "falsetto". I'm pretty sure Geddy Lee doesn't sing in falsetto most of the time, I think he just has a high voice.

3.) Rush isn't, and never has been, heavy metal. 80's heavy metal would be bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, etc. (all of whom I happen to like) and Rush has a very different sound from those bands.

4.) I graduated high school in 1983, so I was there for the 80's. When most people think of 80's music, they're talking about bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure, Flock of Seagulls, etc. And Rush was never all that influential, so if the 80's were indeed "irrelevant musically", it had little to do with Rush.

Author is a morAn.

Well, after years of happily enjoying Rush, shipofthesun has convinced me to hate them.

Will someone please tell me what I should listen to that isn't needlessly complex and technical, emotionless, technical, and juvenile? I really would like to become a fan of something that will win the approval even the biggest Fark music snobs.

Yeah, fake falsetto is somewhat reduntant or as George Carlin puts it: "Unnecessary Words!"

As for his speaking voice, It's not high pitched. It's normal voice that you'd here from most men on the street.

I can't really take a music opinion seriously from somebody who compares Rush to Poison. Love or hate either or both of them, Rush is about as musically complex as hard rock gets, and Poison is about as simple as it gets. To not understand that difference shows a lack of listening or a bad ear.

I can think of plenty of things to use to make fun of Rush (most of which have been covered here), but they weren't/aren't a hair band.
