They were incredibly stupid, but that doesn't mean they weren't going to hurt someone if they could.

...when a video store worker contacted them after a customer brought a DVD to be duplicated. The DVD showed 10 young men "Shooting assault weapons at a firing range in a militia-like style while calling for jihad and shouting in Arabic 'Allah Akbar' ('God is Great')

Yeah, I wasn't a big fan either... but Affleck was the bomb in "Phantoms".

Allowing the rental guy to remain anonymous and unavailable for their questioning prevents them from challenging an important part of the case against them.

While that maybe partially true, it's virtually the same thing the police getting an anonymous tip. Regardless, it doesn't discount the information gained by the infiltration of the idiots jihadtastic group.

to everyone saying 'these guys were clowns'... obviously they were clowns, and not seemingly funded by any well organized group... however, had Cho been discovered buying clips on Ebay, and then shooting up rubber duckies along with his videos, I think we would have written him off as a clown too - its not rocket science to walk into a group of unsuspecting people and start shooting them

these kind of clowns are actually a little more worrisome because the 'lone wolf' types will be harder to find, whatever their motivation for killing. Its also not rocket science to strap a bomb to yourself and walk into a crowd either -

some guy got his head blown off in vegas touching a package on his car. i think these jihadis fail to truly realize how open a nation we are and how easily they could sow terror. but they keep aiming for the big event. just get a few cans of gas and drive it into a day care center playground. that would make the nation go nuts.

/note to FBI: i am not advocating this; it's just a gedankenexperiment

The jihadists were probably not as retarded as assumed.. Most of those duplicators are analog type, without a viewer or or anything, so the employee must have taken it upon himself to put it into a player, based upon his assumptions about the less than savory customers.

Also, they may be clowns but "10 young men with assult rifles" is pretty serious business.

While that maybe partially true, it's virtually the same thing the police getting an anonymous tip. Regardless, it doesn't discount the information gained by the infiltration of the idiots jihadtastic group.

If probable cause for infiltrating their group was premised on a video, then it does call the information into question. The cops need some reason to go undercover on people. You can't just decide to spy on someone then come up with pretext for that later.

Even granting that this case is likely much stronger than just "hey we found a video, let's spy on them," they still should have the right, in a trial of their peers, to call into question the evidence that they get. With an anonymous tip, the police don't know the identity but get probable cause. Where they do know who is providing them information, unless they have a seriously compelling reason to hide the person, it makes sense to give the defendant an opportunity to call into question their credibility.

2007-05-08 03:00:18 PM
What doesn't make sense to me, is how a group of people willing to DIE for their cause can FAIL at commiting an attack....

1) It shouldn't take you dumbfarks 6 weeks, let alone 6 months.

2) Charging into a millitary base with AK47s?? There's MUCH more effecient ways of murder.

3) Your extremists... It should be easy as fark to tell when somebodys not really behind you on it. Make everybody chop off a toe or something. Christ.

I guess were lucky that only imbred dumb asses would consider terrorism I viable form of changing the world.

They don't sound like they were connected to any major terrorist organizations. More like idiot "terror fans" who got off on attacks against Americans, and finally decided they wanted to give it a try themselves.

Doesn't mean they couldn't have killed a bunch of people. Glad they were stopped.

Patriot Act.

To be honest, I have a sick desire to see just how far all of them would have gotten at Fort Dix. Outisde of the PX area, I am thinking most people have sidearms, just because. Dix used to be (I'm thinking it still is) a major embarkation point for troops going overseas.

Honestly, I just want to see someone splatter a group of farkers like this, then have it all over CNN.

I don't know - we don't know yet. Just because these guys were the worst of the crop doesn't mean they weren't connected. Like, you are Al-Queso. You are rapidly running out of competent characters. What's left are the guys you won't trust with your pin number. But they will work, they will start a ruckus, however stupid and brief it is.

kraut7: How hard is it to whip out a rifle and start shooting at groups of people?

Depends on the paranoia factor, how they were dressed, how they were acting. If they let off clues, a lot of the people there (as far as I know) have experience with the whole gulf war issue. They know what to look for.

In other words, I am thinking the chances of these guys pulling a Virginia tech at Dix is pretty low.

Very easy. So easy in fact I'm surprised it hasn't happened more often. I lived in the DC area when the 'Beltway snipers' were killing people and the cops had NO clue for weeks what was going on. It was scary.

Does this count as a terror plot?

Weren't they planning to hit a military target? If it really is a "war on terror" wouldn't "terror" hitting a military base just be a battle?

What terror alert level are we at now? Orange? Pink? Buy one two topping get the second one free? Or are we supposed to just forget about that whole thing? Duct tape and plastic?

Dino: Oh see my brother's clumsy Colonel, and when he gets unhappy he breaks things. Like say, he don't feel the army's playing fair by him, he may start breaking things, Colonel.

Colonel: What is all this about?

Luigi: How many men you got here, Colonel?

Colonel: Oh, er ... seven thousand infantry, six hundred artillery, and er, two divisions of paratroops.

Luigi: Paratroops, Dino.

Dino: Be a shame if someone was to set fire to them.

Colonel: Set fire to them?

/attack a military base? good plan lads

pluerick charging into a millitary base with AK47s?? There's MUCH more effecient ways of murder.

But no more efficient ways of committing suicide. And you're right- 6 months to plan charging in with guns blazing? If that's the best you can come up with, you can get started on that retarded bullshiat the same day.

this proves the men wanted to be caught. Its like Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment. Its just about impossible to carry out such a dastardly deed because the criminal always does himself in. you know what you are doing is wrong, and your conduct will get you busted.

My real gripe? With The Smoking Gun posting documents from an ongoing investigation, the two consensual witnesses are now useless for future stings, and might even have been put in great personal danger. Everyone who knows the suspects is going to also know the only two guys from their posse who weren't named in the report.

Great going, brainiacs at Smoking Gun. We get entertained while others may be killed for it.
