In the leadup to the interview, in the video from TFA, the anchors mention that Berkowitz wanted to speak "only to" their reporter.

Way to sell advertising, asshats. Phish for an "exclusive" interview with a vapid murderer, then let him blather incessantly about how much better he is now that he's had a chance to think about it. Great way to honor the memories of those slain.

Slow news month?

Read 'Ultimate Evil' by Maury Terry, Berkowitz was the fall guy altho guilty of something I'm sure. They were cult killings.

Not really a conspiracy nut, but this book was interesting.

2007-05-08 11:58:04 AM
And so now, despite having killed all of those people, he's assured an eternity in paradise.

Nice going, Jesus.

Wouldn't Berkowitz look great dressed up as Willy Wonka?

Person murdered by Berkowitz: "Oh my god! What are you doing here?!"
Berkowitz: "I repented! Everything's a-okay now! Say, sorry about that whole murder thing. No hard feelings for shooting you to death? What's that like anyway?"

under a mountain Read 'Ultimate Evil' by Maury Terry,

Exactly what I came here to say! Great book !!

Note, his conspirators, the Carr brothers, were both died mysteriously.

The older one (plus his sister, I think) was a higher-up in the fledginling Scientology movement (an off-shoot of L.Ron's interest in Satanism)

It was this horseschiat about being "born again" and "saved" that was the first sort of little beam of light that broke through to me when I was like 10, going to a Southern Baptist church, and in danger of actually buying that schiat.

I remember one day I asked my Sunday School teacher on this topic. My question was "So if Hitler had asked Jesus to be his lord and savior just before he died, he'd go to heaven, but if you never did, but spent your whole life helping people and trying to make the world better, but never believed in Jesus or asked him to save you, you'd go to hell?"

When I was told that, yes, this would be the case, I pretty much checked out of this whole religion nonsense right there.

The bright side of my religious upbringing, however, is that if suddenly all the Christians I know vanish and a new government initiative is announced asking people to have 666 tattooed on their hands, I'll know for damn sure what's going on.

"And that dog can freakin' TALK, man."

Well, good for him.

I hope it's genuine and not just for the parole board.

It's been a while, so I don't remember the exact Dennis Miller quote, but...

No one gives their life to Jesus on Prom Night...it seems like the only people who give their lives to Jesus are the ones who have farked things up so badly that Jesus is the only one who WILL talk to them.

2007-05-08 12:07:14 PM
No one becomes born again on prom night. It's always after they've either hit rock bottom, pissed off everyone they know or get thrown in jail after killing a bunch of people. Fark born againers. They're more obnoxious than peolpe who are born fundies.

It warms my heart that he has accepted Jesus in his life to battle the demons that made him do so many bad things. Hopefully, he'll work to help save other fallen souls too.

It seems that rejecting something because of one person's ignorance rather than investigating that thing for yourself is very common among people who reject Christianity. They really need to start teaching critical thinking skills in schools.

I can assure you, jake_lex that this is not how things work.

2007-05-08 12:10:29 PM
The optimist in me wants to believe that anyone can change, especially with thirty years to think about what you did.

The pessimist in me knows that psychopaths will say and do anything if there's something in it for them. It may that he's trying to angle for a parole hearing, or it may have something to do with the (according to his wikipedia entry) memoirs he's thinking about publishing, or it could just be the ego boost of attention whoring.

Well then. My inner pessimist seems to have more to say than my inner optimist. Howsabout we hang him so he can find out for himself whether or not God has forgiven him?

/serial killers make me cranky

2007-05-08 12:10:48 PM
Rather than resenting that people worse than us can be granted salvation, shouldn't we instead be relieved that it means that even people as imperfect as us can find forgiveness?

Oh, and jake_lex, you were misinformed. The question you asked is known as the problem of the virtuous pagan, and it's an question that Christianity has not been able to settle yet. The person who answered you was mistaken.
