What the hell were the deaf people expecting???

2002-08-22 05:43:09 AM
I have a deaf friend, who would have pissed himself laughing if this had happened to him. Was this some kind of special outing for deaf people with no sense of humour or something.

!!!

Kick ass. QOTSA is one of my favorite bands.

The article is a bit misleading, as Josh Homme also sings, but it's always good to see them get print.

I'll have to break my boycott of RIAA labels for this one. I'll do my damndest to get a copy at one of their shows, at least the artists get a meatier percentage when you do this.

"They were angry and said they had phoned us to check we were holding a Songs For The Deaf night. "

Perhaps they didn't hear the answer.

2002-08-22 05:50:21 AM
Ironic would also have suited this.

2002-08-22 05:51:37 AM
i'm confused....the deaf group says they called to find out what the concert was about...what was the call like (through that deaf phone service thing)..."hi, is there a "sopngs for the deaf night" going on on friday?...."yes sir"....thanks...CLICK

why didn't they ask exactly what "songs for the deaf" meant?????

2002-08-22 05:53:24 AM
Many years ago, I myself was the victim of a similarly misleading marketing ploy. I bought a record called 'The Sound of Silence' only to have the whole experience ruined by a couple of young hippies (Simon & Garfunkel I believe they called themselves)whailing all the way through it.

2002-08-22 05:57:33 AM
Deaf people can watch sort of rhythmic signing/dance performance thingies according to my mate. He thinks it's all a load of gay bollox though.

2002-08-22 05:59:08 AM
Dear God, somebody photoshop these dumbasses please.

2002-08-22 06:02:01 AM
My ex-gf was a deaf moron. This would've sucked her in too.

Maybe now there's a market for instruments that light up when you hit/strum/blow/sing into them.

2002-08-22 06:08:20 AM
Close2TheEdge - Steve Howe.

Musicians unsually look goofy.

2002-08-22 06:10:44 AM
What?

2002-08-22 06:15:14 AM
Damn, I think I'm gonna go to start a band and create an album entitled "Music for the hot slutty nude chicks"

2002-08-22 06:29:43 AM
"One of the crowd said they were here for the Songs For The Deaf night and that they would call the Trading Standards Commission if they didn't get in.

Well, sure, if you pay... *lost*

2002-08-22 06:39:16 AM
Who cares about the article. QOTSA rocks, as does their new cd.

2002-08-22 06:46:08 AM
Don't sound so surprised, I used to know some deaf people and they also have disco's. They just turn the music up really really loud (not kidding) and use lot's and lot's of bass so they "feel" the music trembling.

How are deaf people otherwise supposed to date or ever dance? No one wants to miss out on dancing. :)

This is a true thing, go ask around and they will tell you.

2002-08-22 06:46:26 AM
It could have worked, You just put them right up next to the stage Right next to thoses Big ass loudspaekers and turn the bas guitar and bas drum feed all the way up. It would sound like shiat to every on else, but the deaf would be able to "FEEL" the music and dance, Dance, Dance.

2002-08-22 06:59:25 AM
Josh Homme is GOD.

Did I say Josh Homme? No, I meant Ben Folds.

Queens of the Stone Age does kick ass, though.

Damn deaf people not getting Homme's sense of humor.

2002-08-22 07:06:53 AM
QOTSA kick ass. Good to see Dave Grohl back behind the drums again. New album rocks. Buy it.

2002-08-22 07:11:38 AM
QOTSA are one of the brightest spots in rock music today. We need them. We need Dave Grohl. Though Dave Grohl makes popular music, he makes good popular music. From drumming on the new QOTSA album to drumming for Tenacious D to the new Foo Fighters album in October, he is all over everything golden.

anyway, back to QOTSA. They are up near the top with Dismemberment Plan to be the greatest rock band out right now. In a time when radio is lead by a bunch of rock with your cock out crap, it is good to have bands like this around. Kyuss is great too.

2002-08-22 07:21:40 AM
start parrot voice

Turn up the bass, turn up the bass, dance for me you deaf dancers, DANCE!

/parrot voice

Hey ! Its in the Sun ! It MUST be true !!!

(Glad to hear the new album is good - rated R rocked like the preverbial MoFo).

2002-08-22 07:58:27 AM
Scrotar - LOL. Steve Howe just looks like Monty Burns or the Crypt-keeper these days.

2002-08-22 08:04:09 AM
"The group never thought their album would cause such confusion."

Has anyone here ever seen "Mr. Holland"s Opus"?

The group has never had any thoughts to date.

Mandingo- What kind of "MORON" are you? She must have seen something in you that was common ground.

2002-08-22 08:17:54 AM
Hey, I'm not linking "deaf" and "moron" in any way. I've known intelligent deaf people. She just wasn't one of them.

2002-08-22 08:28:33 AM
One of the weirdest concert experiences was going to see KISS, and right in front of us was a woman SIGNING the concert to a section of deaf folks. The ironies are endless. The best part, however, was to see how she signed the lyrics to "Love Gun".... heh...

2002-08-22 08:34:09 AM
QOTSA makes music which you just have to sing along to. 'If Only', 'Mexicola', 'Better Living Through Chemistry', 'I Think I Lost My Headache', hell, almost all of 'Rated R' come to think of it. It's really rare to find a heavy band which makes pretty music without being too sissy or pretentious (see Dream Theatre, Dead Can Dance, some Masters of Reality -and I like these bands).

Close2TheEdge - Of course, he didn't always look that way. Age just doesn't have any respect for talent. :(

2002-08-22 08:37:38 AM
When I saw Adam Sandler do his standup routine there was somebody signing to a group of deaf people. He noticed and farked with that woman during the whole show. He would just say "coont" or "fark" and she would have to sign it. It was some pretty funny shiat.

QOTSA RULE!

2002-08-22 08:40:40 AM
This seems a bit suspect to me. 37 fully grown people who have never heard of QOTSA? They're a pretty famous band.

Also, the bit about them threatening to call Trading Standards if they didn't get in: Well, duh, show a freakin ticket and THEN you can get in.

2002-08-22 08:42:23 AM
Just for the record, I too think QOTSA rock. They are probably my favorite band right now. I can't get enough of them.

2002-08-22 08:51:18 AM
This band kicks so much ass. Dave Grohl rules!

2002-08-22 08:54:51 AM
I recently saw QOTSA with Grohl on drums and Mark Lanegan guesting on a few songs...an amazing show. I'm pretty sure the deaf could've heard most of those songs...but then I also thought I might be deaf when it was over.

2002-08-22 08:59:03 AM
If I knew it was that easy, hell I would have made an album called "Songs for Hot Naked Blue Eyed College Girls"

2002-08-22 09:29:56 AM
Why is it you can't look at the Sun without seeing an article about Britney Spears, even when you're looking at an article that's NOT about Britney Spears?!? Get your own celibrity skank, you lonely British wankers!

2002-08-22 10:25:51 AM
while i havent heard the newest QOTSA album, i must say im not looking forward to it. QOTSA started as a stoner rock band, picking up where Kyuss left off, and their last record (Rated R) was a far cry from the original split EP with Kyuss. note the difference between "feel good hit of the summer" and "spiders and vinegaroons", from R and the split, respectively.

i hate to say this, but im afraid QOTSA sold out. hopefully this new album is better, but with Dave Grohl on drums i dont see how it could be - not that he is a bad drummer, but that he isnt a "stoner rock" drummer.

i hate it when good bands switch genres.

did somebody say photoshop?

2002-08-22 11:28:51 AM
QOTSA's last album was incredible. With Grohl playing on all of the tracks (except 1, i think), it should be a pretty intense album. Although, it's pretty wierd they are getting airplay in NY on KROCK.

2002-08-22 12:01:25 PM
but with Dave Grohl on drums i dont see how it could be - not that he is a bad drummer, but that he isnt a "stoner rock" drummer.

come on now! That is just rediculous! Dave Grohl is anything he wants to be. The guy is making a metal album with Lemmy from Motorhead, Tom Araya from Slayer and many others. If it wasnt for Dave Grohl, there would be no Nirvana. Too much credit is given to Kurt Cobain. He might have been lead singer but after seeing what Dave Grohl is capable of, I firmly believe Dave was the mastermind behind such feelgood hits as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Rape Me". The guy is a musical genius and is overlooked because the wacko, no-talent in his former group shot himself.

QOTSA rock. They are almost as good as JB and KG with Dave on drums. (even though Sasquach was close to Dave) Dave Grohl is a god.

*steps down off Dave Grohl's nutsac*

2002-08-22 12:02:04 PM
sad. had a similar thing happen here when they screened "Blind Ambition".

"They were angry and said they had phoned us to check we were holding a Songs For The Deaf night."

now....how in the hell???

2002-08-22 12:02:16 PM
I saw QOTSA a few years back, and they kicked ass in concert. So I bought Rated R to help out the band, but I didn't like it. Maybe Grohl on drums will help the new album, I haven't heard it yet. They needed to turn up the drums on Rated R, it was too poppy. I saw em with VAST, you guys should check VAST out too, they were cool as well.

2002-08-22 12:02:55 PM
When Dave Grohl plays the drums, even the deaf can hear it. He bangs the hell out of those things.

2002-08-22 01:07:08 PM
If you like the older QOTSA and Kyuss stuff, be sure to check out the Desert Sessions (a Homme project), if you already haven't. They put out several volumes (eight?) and there's a LOT of good collaborating talent.

Flignir: I don't know... when I hear of the Sun, all I can think about is one thing - Leilani...

Yum!

Stupid question of the thread: I haven't heard the acronym QOTSA before. Maybe I've heard the band, maybe I haven't... but I'm drawing a blank right now. What does it stand for?

"The guy is a musical genius and is overlooked because the wacko, no-talent in his former group shot himself"
-Chemmie

Yes Dave Grohl is talented, but I dont know if you have ever listened to Nirvana if you describe Kurt as this.

no-talent? big call considering he wrote the lyrics, sung and played guitar on songs that are masterpieces.

Nirvana were Nirvana without Dave Grohl, he was a late addition to the band. Its like saying Ringo Starr was the Beatles. Kurt Cobain was Nirvana, Dave Grohl is the foo fighters.

If Grohl was the mastermind behind these nirvana songs where has his angst gone. And why is he now just doing lovely little pop ditties that sit so comfortably in the middle of the road.

2002-08-22 01:27:10 PM
What???

I said, turn it up!!

What???

Turn it up!!

2002-08-22 01:59:01 PM
You missed the sarcasm in my statement. I know Kurt Cobain wrote Nirvana's songs and blah blah blah blah... I was just being a little Dave Grohl fanboy. Foo Fighters are a fantastic band and one of the best in rock right now but they are overlooked because of their commercial appeal. They are proof that just because something is popular and somewhat ordinary, it doesnt mean it has to suck. I think of Foo Fighters as a middle of the road rock band. But they are the best at being a middle of the road rock band.

Me and a couple of the more dubious Farkers in Houston (as if not all of Fark is dubious and shady) will be hitting the QOTSA show in Houston. If you'll be there, perhaps we can hook up.

And it stands for Queens of the Stone Age. One of the bands that we will be praising 10 years from now for saving us from the MTV-Radio drivel that the listening world is drowning in.

If you have not heard their stuff, check it out. Seriously.

2002-08-22 02:08:49 PM
The Dismemberment Plan are the saviors of rock... I said it now. QOTSA arent far behind though.

2002-08-22 02:13:51 PM
Ohhh Ohhh Ohh the Dismemberment Plan rocks indeed chemmie! You are invited!
GOOD Morning!
