Gunman apprehended? Only one source.

Wow...there were two people at Ward Parkway? Maybe the clientèle from there and Metcalf South merged.

So sad, more daisy pushers.

untrustworthy- I'd rather they catch him alive so they can figure out WTF was going on inside of his head.

I don't give a shrill soprano hoot in Hell what he was thinking. I don't want to know this person's name, see his picture, learn about his ebay habits, or listen to whatever drivel he may have submitted to the networks. All that slok does is encourage the next whackjob that his personal path to fame/notoriety/salvation is to star tshooting random people.

The only thing that matters is he'll never harm any more innocents.

/a pox on all their houses

And if anyone needs a geographic diagram of the area, here you go (west to east):

JOHNSON CO, KANSAS >> State Line Road >> "Ward Pkwy Ctr" >> Ward Parkway >> Upper-class KCMO >> Middle Income KCMO >> The 'in-betweens' >> Troost Ave. >> low-income urban KCMO

I didn't say that. I posted the link to the Ween video...

CNN is saying witnesses saw a guy with a sawed-off shotgun. When it broke, the crawl on TV said the shooter may have a fully automatic AK-47 assault rifle.

Is it just me, or does CNN always say it's an AK before any facts are in? Do they really just like AKs a lot? Or are they going with the "broken clock" school of pre-reporting in hopes they'll be right one day?

2007-04-29 06:59:54 PM
Yes, all pro-CC people are gun nuts. I am neither retarded nor a troll. You, however, are a nut, a nut being defined as "someone who would rather see 10,000 unnecessary deaths every year rather than accept any limitations on his right to barms as guaranteed by an antiquated section of the Constitution." The last time people got so lathered up over their supposed rights as delineated in the Constitution, we had a Civil War. Your position is the moral equivalent of slave-owners getting worked up over the 3/5ths rule.

I was just on my way to buy some socks at that Target. If I had been there an hour earlier, I would've been in the middle of that shiat. I'm getting my CCW and will be carrying a Glock 26. I've had it with these farking nutjobs.

2007-04-29 07:01:01 PM
These deaths are a small price to pay for our right to bear arms.

Schools, factories, and malls have been done to death.

/No pun intended.
//Or WAS it?
///It really wasn't, anyway.

No kidding. Can we make April "Gun Safety Month", or "Responsible Firearms Use Month", or something?

The hillariously crappy Metcalf South mall, with all of five stores still operating plus the theater I work in had cops all around it in case of some kind of pre-planned mass shooting, but alas nothing materialized. Not surprised to see it as a news flash on fark when I got home.

Untrustworthy, the 3/5ths rule is out of the Constitution. It's gone. Just like your unrestricted right to collect and shoot deadly weapons will someday be gone.

Off topic, is there a Civil War equivalent to the Godwin rule?

untrustworthy- These people aren't evil. They're sick.

What "these people" are is a textbook definition of Evil. Far more important than trying to figure out what "makes" them Evil is to stop giving them the attention they crave.

/happy a couple of off-duty officers were there.

I'm trying to decide what to carry when I get my CCW. I don't have much experience with anything more than a semi-automatic .22

Poor Fox News - - they just typed up all their Georgia wildfire headlines, and now they've decided to leave the midwest carnage to talk about burning pine trees.

Great career move, Mr. Technical Director! If it bleeds, it... gets dropped into the bulletin crawl while you interview trailer park residents?

CNN is reporting gunman confirmed shot dead by law enforcement.

/Maybe the shooter thought that zombie game from last night was just a little too much fun.

2007-04-29 07:12:26 PM
The police chief said the gunman is dead and his body along with the other two dead bodies is still inside the mall.

2007-04-29 07:13:39 PM
thedodo: They're trying to get a law passed that strips private property owners of the right to choose whether to ban concealed weapons.

How utterly ironic - most people ostensibly use the guns to protect their property rights. That whole "your rights end where my rights begin" thing. I wonder if they're also lobbying to add provisions to make the property owner immune from lawsuit for not taking security measures.

2007-04-29 07:14:37 PM
I read another article that said the gunman was in his truck, shooting at a Starbucks. Don't know if it's true, but at least that's understandable.

2007-04-29 07:15:12 PM
anthropomorphic personification

Police typically recommend nothing smaller than a 9mm. You should go to a range and rent a few handguns if possible. I personally like the small size of the Glock 26 in addition to it's large capacity (12 rounds + 1 in the chamber). If you're comfortable with the extra kick, .40 Smith & Wesson is also a popular caliber. Some people prefer the reliability of a revolver so they get the .38 snubnose (like the kind detectives in old movies carry).

First of all, federal or state laws would need to make it a crime punishable by a $1,000 fine and one year in prison per weapon to possess a firearm. The population would then be given three months to turn in their guns, without penalty.

Hunters would be able to deposit their hunting weapons in a centrally located arsenal, heavily guarded, from which they would be able to withdraw them each hunting season upon presentation of a valid hunting license. The weapons would be required to be redeposited at the end of the season on pain of arrest. When hunters submit a request for their weapons, federal, state, and local checks would be made to establish that they had not been convicted of a violent crime since the last time they withdrew their weapons. In the process, arsenal staff would take at least a quick look at each hunter to try to affirm that he was not obviously unhinged.

It would have to be the case that the term "hunting weapon" did not include anti-tank ordnance, assault weapons, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, or other weapons of war.

All antique or interesting non-hunting weapons would be required to be delivered to a local or regional museum, also to be under strict 24-hour-a-day guard. There they would be on display, if the owner desired, as part of an interesting exhibit of antique American weapons, as family heirlooms from proud wars past or as part of collections.

Gun dealers could continue their work, selling hunting and antique firearms. They would be required to maintain very tight inventories. Any gun sold would be delivered immediately by the dealer to the nearest arsenal or the museum, not to the buyer.

The disarmament process would begin after the initial three-month amnesty. Special squads of police would be formed and trained to carry out the work. Then, on a random basis to permit no advance warning, city blocks and stretches of suburban and rural areas would be cordoned off and searches carried out in every business, dwelling, and empty building. All firearms would be seized. The owners of weapons found in the searches would be prosecuted: $1,000 and one year in prison for each firearm.

Clearly, since such sweeps could not take place all across the country at the same time. But fairly quickly there would begin to be gun-swept, gun-free areas where there should be no firearms. If there were, those carrying them would be subject to quick confiscation and prosecution. On the streets it would be a question of stop-and-search of anyone, even grandma with her walker, with the same penalties for "carrying."

Wenchmaster: I don't give a shrill soprano hoot in Hell what he was thinking. . . . The only thing that matters is he'll never harm any more innocents.

Yeah, there's no reason for people who are experts in such things to have any better knowledge about how to prevent people from thinking that way, or to recognize earlier that they are thinking that way before something bad results from it. I'm sure mental hygiene had nothing to do with the event, it was probably just the presence of an inanimate lump of formed metal.

The mall beat them to the deadness...

2007-04-29 07:31:42 PM
"Concealed carry folks: Write the property owners and management of your local malls demanding that the useless "no gun" signs be removed."

Yeah, because clearly the police officer who was armed was so damn effective. I am not against concealed carries, but there is a huge tactical miscalculation its strongest proponents are making and that is that bullets don't discriminate. I am also well aware that many police officers do not put in an adequate number of hours training with their weapons. We don't know in this case.

Your bullet goes somewhere and that somewhere may not be the bad guy. In fact, statistically, it is likely not to be the bad guy. Putting more bullets in the air from marginally trained firearms owners is not a good idea. I consider most CC courses to actually be marginal at best.

That being said I am all for concealed carries for people who take a proper course in tactical defense and maintain certifiable hours of CE. That will weed out all the yahoos and rambo wannabes who clearly have fantasies about blowing away a bad guy in one of this situations.

You scare me.

He's plagarizing Dan Simpson's essay on the means by which the US could be disarmed.

2007-04-29 07:32:12 PM
untrustworthy- Sorry, but I don't really believe in evil.

Do you believe in good? Evil is the opposite of good. However, I am not going to debate philosophy with anyone.

People do things for reasons. And the reason behind mass shootings is often a mental disorder coupled with some developmental issues, etc. There is often genetic predispositions involved as well. These aren't storybook villains. They're people. Ignoring what causes them to do what they do only guarantees the problem will not get better.

In your opinion.

There are tons of people out there with mental disorders of one sort or another. There are also lots of people with family histories of mental illness. Since not all of them commit mass murder, there is probably something else at work. I'll stick with "evil", because these sorts of acts are evil. People who do evil things are evil.

That's not going to happen. The news reports when people do awful things. Would you prefer that no reporters covered the VT shootings? How about the 9/11 attacks? Let's try to be realistic.

Let's try to not be naive. There is a distinct difference between reporting the facts and reporting every bit of trivia about a mass-murderer's life- including displaying their so-called "manifesto" and showing their insipid plays/life stories/etc. This sick pandering to the fantasies of evil people guarantees more of the same.
