The TotalFark bars (above TotalFarkers postings) have serious readability problems:

-> Total*Fark icon is too close to the name

-> Light Purple on Dark Purple takes much more effort to read than the liters' names.

d'art: I think a picture of you spanking his bare bottom would have sufficed....um...for me at least.

Yea, me too..

That's hot!

2007-04-26 02:51:19 PM
Already it's better than it was yesterday, but for some reason it's still making my eyes hurt and giving me a stiff neck from having to look to the left.

Better, but still needs work.

2007-04-26 02:51:21 PM
Appreciate your comments Drew. Jeff needed to apologize, but now that he has, everyone should take it easy on him. I have said many things I regretted in the heat of the moment.

2007-04-26 02:51:23 PM
Looks great to me. But what do I know? I still use dial-up...

2007-04-26 02:51:29 PM
Why the redesign? Websites have to evolve over time. Otherwise you end up with a layout anachronism like the Drudge Report.

The most profitable company on the planet is Google.com. They haven't had a major redesign of their main page since they moved out of the dorm room.

There was unfortunately no way to contact everyone and procure opinions.

When you want to contact everyone, you put things on the main page. You do it all the time. You did it with this post.

The easy way would've been to post screenshots of the new design... the more thorough solution would have been to set up a beta server...

In other news, Jeff posted a comment in the redesign thread that got people up in arms. My apologies for Jeff's comments. He was trying to defend Mike's hard work and effort that went into the redesign and got a little hot under the collar. That was uncalled-for and I have told him so. Jeff's views do not reflect the views of the site, we intend to work with the community going forward to fix issues like comment readability, contest formats, and so on. He submitted this apology to the readership:

"I'm sorry that I let the negative comments affect me as much as they did. I reacted too strongly with a snarky comment of my own. I shouldn't have done that. Don't take what I have said as a feeling that anyone on the back end of Fark also feels."

In the meantime, Jeff will be taking an extended break from modding/admining Fark

A lot of people were looking for this. Good.

2007-04-26 02:51:35 PM
I dunno, to me the ads are much more visible/distracting than in the old layout...

2007-04-26 02:51:38 PM
The white is too bright. Need spacers / bars between submissions. Liked the old format.

2007-04-26 02:51:39 PM
Not quite over it, getting there maybe about 20% from the hump but meh.

2007-04-26 02:51:42 PM
Sorry Drew, But it still sucks. It looks bland and it's still broken. Right now I'm getting comments shooting off to the right of the page and have to scroll about six virtual feet to read all the comments unless the writer has put in a line break. I accept that you had to redesign the page but why didn't you give the job to a web designer with some talent?

2007-04-26 02:51:47 PM
If we could just get the left column back for balance. This full left side thingy is lame. Too much blank on the right side.

Mad props to Mike, Patton, and the rest of the crew who have worked diligently since the updates went live yesterday. I can say for certain, that Mike and Patton are listening to the /constructive/ comments people are making, and are taking them to heart.

As far as the site design goes, I only have one suggestion (I gave it to Mike last night, but I'll reiterate here):

The space between the end of the comment text and the next commentor's bar is still a bit wide. About 10px too wide. Just seems like a ton of whitespace.

Otherwise, great job, keep up the good work!

24 hours too late.

That's too bad that you can't be patient. Drew is very busy, and Jeff, well, it's probably good he stepped away when he did. At least he had the decency to apologize, even if Drew posted it.

2007-04-26 02:51:51 PM
Thanks, Drew. That was a very well-considered and diplomatic response.

The old layout was quaint and familiar, but far from perfect. This one is cold and awkward. However, as I've said elsewhere, change can change again, and you seem open-minded. Just don't go back to the logo with the big old shadow, no matter what anyone says, okay?

2007-04-26 02:51:51 PM
I think that its harder to read everything.

2007-04-26 02:51:53 PM
I LIKE IT! Good job guys.

2007-04-26 02:51:58 PM
Well this is good for a laugh. Just tried to load up fark in IE and it took almost 30 full seconds to load. This is including the time it took for IE to recover after fark's ads caused it to lock up.
I think I'll stick with the cleaner stylesheet, thanks. Grey background is an improvement though.

2007-04-26 02:51:59 PM
My eyes! It doesn't work in this new design!

2007-04-26 02:52:01 PM
ooh, the darker grey helps, as does unifying the square vs. round edges at the top. if the border can be removed from the comments block, and the farkername blocks be extended to the edges to add a bit of extra division between comments, I think things will be pretty swell. Still not crazy about the colored tabs, though. Making them pastel like the "fark purple" would help, I think.

2007-04-26 02:52:04 PM
Can someone toss me the link to what Jeff said?

2007-04-26 02:52:13 PM
You had me at hello.

2007-04-26 02:52:14 PM
Thanks for the update Drew. Answers a lot of questions.

2007-04-26 02:52:21 PM
Personally, I don't think you need to bring the old layout back. It was out dated and sites need to evolve. The problem is that by removing old "clutter"...it seems you've added new. The formatting design of the site is a jarbled mess of out of date coding and the CSS was obviously put together by someone who doesn't know much about CSS, or design.

I do appreciate that there was lots of hard work involved by certain parties, but facts are facts. With a site this large, the design needs a few things:
1) Better functionality.
2) Restructured HTML, etc.
3) Updated CSS.
4) A color scheme that is aesthetically pleasing.

It's nothing a consultation with a real life, honest to goodness web designer couldn't fix.

2007-04-26 02:52:23 PM
Thank god for user styles, I'm getting used to the new Fark now, now that people have taken the initiative on their own to get Fark looking nice again. Thanks to all the coders who made the user styles that are making Fark enjoyable.

2007-04-26 02:52:32 PM
now that the main text area is larger, i'm starting to like the redesign...

I could get used to this.

one small thing: the dark blue of the TotalFarkers name line is a bit too dark, too distracting.

thats about the worst i can say at the moment!

Long live FARK!

2007-04-26 02:52:33 PM
Jeff volunteered to spend some extended time with his family? ;-)

Meh, he wasn't the only one that was a little emotional about the redesign last night and he was infinitely more diplomatic than some. I say give him a pass.

2007-04-26 02:52:34 PM
What did jeff say that was so bad. I looked through the other post but there are way to many, if anyone know which post and about what time it happened I would be most greatful.

2007-04-26 02:52:40 PM
It's the end of life as I once knew Fark.
Good bye, cruel world...

Thank you.

To answer the main question I've been receiving: We will not be returning to the old Fark layout. That is off the table. We will however be working hard on this one to get it right.

That's really stupid.

But put everything in the middle and make it Farkit compatible and I'll get used to it.

2007-04-26 02:52:43 PM
"Why the redesign? Websites have to evolve over time."

Translation: We had to find a way to fit those huge, annoying flash ads on the page, and the old layout was far too sensible to allow for that.

I was really confused for a second, until I realized you attributed the wrong poster.

2007-04-26 02:52:53 PM
stovey: Is it so hard to just fess up and say "We should have tested this first"? Why lie about it? I know you're lying because nobody who's used the web for more than a week would sign off on some of the horrendous changes you've made. Fixed width? Non-changing link colors? Blinding white? Wasted space? Fess up, you found a guy to do this on the cheap and ran with it. You fell on your face and you are now refusing to admit it because you think you're unfallible.

And your defense of Jeff is weak and pathetic, but I think you already know that.

Too little too late. You lose.

Bitter much? It's just a website.

2007-04-26 02:52:54 PM
Yes, this is a little better. And I accept your apology.

I still think it's chunky and clunky, but definitely more usable now.

I also might point out I do like the changes to the user profile pages.

2007-04-26 02:53:00 PM
To everyone complaining about the white: what the heck color did you think fark was before? I'm in fact seeing a whole lot LESS white and MORE grey than ever...

/seriously, i'm cornfused.

2007-04-26 02:53:00 PM
Oh, and I almost forgot...

Suck it, Duke.

2007-04-26 02:53:01 PM
A design is a design is a design....the content hasn't changed. GET OVER IT PEOPLE!!!!! (although a little darker background would be nice so I don't have to wear sunglasses at work to fark off........)

2007-04-26 02:53:03 PM
God the love of god...keep a classic version option.

You can take a new and improved engine and way of doing things and present it more similar to the old way.

2007-04-26 02:53:09 PM
adragontattoo

PLEASE REMOVE THE GOD AWFUL BLINDING ME WHITE! I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO FARK WITH SUNGLASSES ON!

Please don't. Black-on-white provides the best contrast for legibility. If you don't like it, you can turn your monitor brightness down, or wear sunglasses, or put wax paper in front of your screen. It's a lot easier for you to drop your contrast than for the rest of us to increase ours.

/when 45 years old you are, hate tiny low-contrast text you will, too, hmm?

2007-04-26 02:53:10 PM
Having everything waaaaaay over on the left is making my neck hurt. Also, making the headlines clickable makes it more difficult for me to copy & paste them when I'm showing them to people who don't read Fark. And you'll either need to consult a female or a gay male on the color scheme.

2007-04-26 02:53:21 PM
It's Fark. People say crap all the time, please don't "Scooter Libby" Jeff. It's a new look, but hell, give it a few weeks and the whining will stop.

PS: Yeah, the mouseover thing is kinda annoying though.

2007-04-26 02:53:33 PM
OMG, are you all 147 years old? It's black on white... you know, the color of books and every other friggin' print in the world.

Lift your eyes from your yellowed arcane tomes and step into the 19th century for Christ's sake.

2007-04-26 02:53:35 PM
Hehe. Jeff said "anyone on the back end of Fark also feels."

Thanks Drew. We all should learn from our mistakes.

2007-04-26 02:53:36 PM
In the meantime, Jeff will be taking an extended break from modding/admining Fark

So you saying there is an opening?

2007-04-26 02:53:41 PM
Baby Diego

Jeff has been Imus'ed (Sorta, kinda, not really)!

Seriously though, it's a website redesign. All the unneccesary/over-the-top reactionary bullsh*t by the userbase is enough to piss *me* off and I'm not even a mod around here..

Get over yourselves!

Signed,
Someone that paid Drew/Fark $50 for a year's subscription, who doesn't believe that gives them some authority to this place..

The one thing I hate is how visited links turn blue. That goes against the grain of the internets.

2007-04-26 02:53:54 PM
It's coming along, a few improvements have already helped. Give it time. And, thanks for the update.

2007-04-26 02:54:01 PM
As a member of the unwashed masses, I'd like to thank you for issuing the information. I'm sure many end-users would appreciate an RFC period for changes. One could load up the TBD(eployed) changes into fark.com/betaui/ VirtualServer, and let the comments commence. That way those that want to input can, and it'll give folks an adjustment period. As for Imus-ing Jeff for a single comment, I personally think that is over-board. Let the man eat a little crow, and get back to work. /imho

I am glad that you'll be taking user acceptance into account.

2007-04-26 02:54:02 PM
Grey background color on the right side makes it a bit less eye bleeding. Muchos gracias.

Overly corporate response over Jeff's comments, thumbs down. The Fark populace I know would be happy if you said, "I told him to knock it off, he said he was sorry and we took robbed his beer fridge." You left out the "He's going to rehab" part too.

2007-04-26 02:54:18 PM
elchip: Did the old Fark not have a blinding white background also?

On the old Fark, the white space with text was centered with dark solid-color columns on both sides, exactly like a word processor.

I think the problem some people have with the redesign is that there's nowhere dark for your eyes to go. Instead, the eye was drawn to another light space. That's better now (better enough for me, anyway).

/I am not a web designer
