Hi folks

Got a few emails on the redesign, several were helpful in nailing down some major design issues. We're still making changes, feel free to post suggestions in this thread.

To answer the main question I've been receiving: We will not be returning to the old Fark layout. That is off the table. We will however be working hard on this one to get it right.

Why the redesign? Websites have to evolve over time. Otherwise you end up with a layout anachronism like the Drudge Report. The old design was put into place years ago, over time changes were nailed on to the design like loose shingles on a leaky roof. It was time to reformat and remove a bunch of the clutter while trying to keep the core design intact. Many of you have noted that by shifting all of the ads to the right side of the page it makes them easier to ignore. Why yes, it does, ads are not the focus of our site. Attentive readers will see what we just did there.

Contrary to opinion we did consult with a subset of the readership, specifically in the PSAE forum and the TotalFark forum. There was unfortunately no way to contact everyone and procure opinions. The good news is we're still listening and making changes, so not to worry. Keep the comments coming.

In the meantime don't panic, there's nothing that can't be fixed.

In other news, Jeff posted a comment in the redesign thread that got people up in arms. My apologies for Jeff's comments. He was trying to defend Mike's hard work and effort that went into the redesign and got a little hot under the collar. That was uncalled-for and I have told him so. Jeff's views do not reflect the views of the site, we intend to work with the community going forward to fix issues like comment readability, contest formats, and so on. He submitted this apology to the readership:

"I'm sorry that I let the negative comments affect me as much as they did. I reacted too strongly with a snarky comment of my own. I shouldn't have done that. Don't take what I have said as a feeling that anyone on the back end of Fark also feels."

In the meantime, Jeff will be taking an extended break from modding/admining Fark

PS if for some reason this thread gets blown out of the water with response and starts dragging down the dbase like what happened last night we'll be closing it and probably openning another one.

Boo. Hiss.

2007-04-26 02:41:29 PM
worst. redesign. ever.

pwned.

whoa, just saw it for the first time now.

different...!

2007-04-26 02:42:05 PM
well, wider is better for starters.

2007-04-26 02:42:06 PM
I think the new updates make a world of difference. I actually like the redesign now.

2007-04-26 02:42:07 PM
So far, so good. But please get rid of that annoying purple mouseover on the frontpage, it is annoying as hell!

2007-04-26 02:42:24 PM
Quoi?

2007-04-26 02:42:43 PM
I like the main page, it's kind of retro like back in the day when sites didn't have a bunch of flashy colors and graphics.

2007-04-26 02:42:51 PM
And the copyright stuff? Boing Boing just proposed a better solution to what you're trying to accomplish with the changes.

"I reacted too strongly with a snarky comment of my own. I shouldn't have done that. Don't take what I have said as a feeling that anyone on the back end of Fark also feels."

That's for my lawyer to decide.

//please don't send the Fark police after me

The new layout will be easier to adjust to now that the speed is back.

Now, there's only one thing missing from the site... can someone work on activating some .midi files of lounge/polka music?

Good on ya' Drew. Thank you for the apology.
I'm no fan of the design, but thank you for all the fixes thus far.

2007-04-26 02:43:18 PM
I actually don't mind the new design....

2007-04-26 02:43:31 PM
I just hope it turns out good! Off to a slow start.

2007-04-26 02:43:32 PM
My main complaint is the white background is far too much contrast and it makes it difficult to read content. All that you need is a light background color to soften it up a bit.

This isn't an explanation. This is just a long version of saying "change for the sake of change." You could have replaced fark with an image of Rosie's snatch and given this exact same paragraph as a reason.

What was wrong with the old layout, specifically? What is this "clutter"?

2007-04-26 02:43:44 PM
It's getting better. Readability has improved with the variable width.

I'm getting used to the colors, even.

2007-04-26 02:43:47 PM
OK, forget my comment, I hit refresh and everything changed. Damn kids and their new fangled layouts.

2007-04-26 02:43:47 PM
Coincidentally Something Awful GBS has a thread called "Websites that remind you of 1997." Yeah, the redesign's already on there.

2007-04-26 02:43:50 PM
In the meantime, Jeff will be taking an extended break from modding/admining Fark

I think a picture of you spanking his bare bottom would have sufficed....um...for me at least.

2007-04-26 02:43:55 PM
still a little straining on the eyes, tweak the colors maybe?

2007-04-26 02:43:55 PM
I, for one, salute our new CSS overlords.

2007-04-26 02:44:04 PM
OoooOOoOOooOo
/such pretty colors.

2007-04-26 02:44:22 PM
Dear Haters:
You'll get over it.

2007-04-26 02:44:36 PM
I LOVE the new design, with the exception of comment placements. On the left side kind of gives me a squeezed, asymmetric feel.

2007-04-26 02:44:36 PM
Damn, you had to mention "leaky roof". With the rain I knew there was something I needed to do.

Bear in Lex.

2007-04-26 02:44:37 PM
It's different, but not bad. It still has the "Fark look" to it, just updated. Hopefully Farky & Farkit will be updated to work with the new design.

Good jorb!

2007-04-26 02:44:38 PM
Is it just me or do the tab colors make me hungry for skittles?

2007-04-26 02:44:48 PM
Is there any possibility of having the option to switch back to the old layout, assuming one is logged in?

2007-04-26 02:44:52 PM
I like how Drew comes out and says "hi folks", as if he knows alot of Farkers are pissed and doesn't want more people mad. Try imagining that in your head.

2007-04-26 02:44:58 PM
cool...

i'll keep farking...

2007-04-26 02:45:06 PM
They saw SomethingAwful, and had to jump right on the bandwagon?

2007-04-26 02:45:08 PM
What is the PSAE forum?

2007-04-26 02:45:09 PM
I'd forgotten how much fun it is to try to find where I left off each time I revisit a thread. My right index finger will be really ripped soon.

This is a step in the right direction, it's getting easier on the eyes with the white background contrast. The wider comments are good too. If you could just close up posts with a more defined border, that'd be even better.

2007-04-26 02:45:17 PM
You guys are doing good work - and as users, most of us appreciate it. Thanks guys.

2007-04-26 02:45:19 PM
I still request that the usernames be centered. Though I can certaily see why they are on the left.

Like the new look.

All the Nancy boys c an kiss your ass.

///best part although they biatch like little girls, they still use your bandwidth. Lossers!

/// Ya talking to you!
/// What is YOUR website again?

2007-04-26 02:45:21 PM
Thanks. Layout getting better.

Well done on keeping your comments positive even in the face of explaining Jeff.

2007-04-26 02:45:45 PM
The only issue I have with the redesign is that the headline itself is a link to the article. That's annoying as all hell, especially with a mouse at work that will randomly click.

/it's just a web site design people, get over it

2007-04-26 02:45:47 PM
It's much better now, especially with the darker column on the right side and a little bit of space on the left.

2007-04-26 02:45:48 PM
I think you should go after the Geocities/Lycos look from the 90s :D

/I'll get used to this layout soon enough
//As long as the boobies are still here
