God love you Drew, but my eyes are bleeding, and there is SOOOO much unused space on some pages.

Bwahaha, I was about to ask why there was a huge blank rectangle on the main page next to the FARK logo. Then I remembered that I'm on my bf's computer, and he has adblock. Heh.

I don't think it was the load, I think that no one at FARK wanted the #1 Top Comments thread to be people biatching about how the design sucks and Jeff being flippant.

At FARK.com, we love our conspiracy theories.

Here are a couple examples of how good sites change.

Ameritrade.com and Realtor.com both recently had upgrades. For months, the site stayed the same, but you could click on "try new beta site" if you wanted to. Bugs were worked out with the people who wanted to experiment with the new thing.

Eventually, the new site was made the default, but you could switch to the original site if you wanted. For months. And months.

In capitalist America Fark farks You!

/You'll get over it

My suggestions to further tweak the design:

* Username/Date bars thicker (more padding) around the names, no border/outline. Stretch the bars to go edge to edge of the comments area as before.

* Slightly darken the white backrgound, as it really is blindly white. Even #eeeeee would be a huge improvement. Everything blinds and vibrates to me right now.

* Explain to me why fark pages now require a shiatload of CPU cycles to render. It maxes out my CPU quite often, and that's despite running a AMD64 3700+ CPU. Memory leak is also much worse since the redesign. Opening up a couple of Fark comments pages in Mozilla chewed up over 600MB on the spot.

* I personally found Jeff's comments to be quite inappropriate given the CONTEXT of the situation. He could have simply said one thing "Please refrain from using insults and offer suggestions to improve the redesign instead of telling us to change it back." - That would have worked a lot better than "You'll give over it."

* Soften other colours. Red at the bottom is too blinding and harsh compared to the grey that surrounds this also blinding white comment box. Improving the colour harmony would help. A pleasing theme would work better in the redesign rather than sticking to usual colours that don't mesh well in this new layout.

* Skittles tabbar? Sorry. Two colours. One for uptab/highlight. Most of the modders have already implemented this and believe me, it really does help.

* Excessive use of borders. Please simplify. 33% reduction in the use of borders, in general, would greatly help. Sometimes just having a box with a different colour background is ALL YOU NEED. If you must have as many boxes with borders as you have now, at least design it so that all lines that are the result of border definitions are 1pixel thick within another box. Example: All the horizontal lines that are within this blinding white comments box starting from the graident on down. Not everything needs to be a universal line thickness. Having a variation within a container helps to show the overall sense of where things belong.

* Links inside the boxes up to the top right side need to be spaced out a little bit more. They're squished together and contain nothing like bullet points to identify when a new link starts or to indicate that it's simply the same link that is wrapping around due to the size of the text and box.

* Having a try-out beta page, as mentioned before, would have prevented the outcry and howling that followed the redesign of Fark.

* Gradients are lame. Sorry. It just looks very tacky. The logos also look blurry. There is no crispness to the images anymore. The dotted world map behind the fark logo is uneven and Moire'ed because of bad resizing.

Given the size of these threads, I doubt my post will even be noticed, but if it is, I hope those who read this (and are responsible for the design) take my suggestions seriously as opposed to those who cry OMGWTFBBQ! I have experience with webpage design and one thing I can tell you above everything else... colour harmony really makes a big difference. In this case, the red below and the blinding white background are in poor contrast due to the layout and does not work well to make this site readable.

Are all you people who are getting over it already on anti-depressants or something?

2007-04-27 07:07:57 PM
Second the motion to get rid of the headlines being actual links. Impossible to re-focus on the window without hitting a farking link and popping up a story.

Also add my name to the list in terms of getting rid of the black outline round everything. Does nothing.

A bit of tweaking and it'll be sorted. Wouldn't hurt to hire a professional in the first place. A bit of studying of colour theory and usability practise goes a long way. Not to say an amateur can't pick it up along the way - but a high profile site like fark isn't the site to learn it on.

I keep coming back and checking to see if things have improved and they haven't. There's little bug fixes, but no real progress being made.

I tried the Stylish plugin on Firefox. That was a waste of time, it did very little to improve things and it made loading this hogzilla of a web site even slower than it was before. Firefox is worse than Safari in loading time, and with Stylish added, it's twice as long.

Reading the pages is a chore. It's scroll scroll scroll all day long. I can't be bothered to pay attention to the comments anymore, since I have to scroll every two comments.

It still doesn't look right being on the left. It's exactly like I described it before, its as if someone parted their hair on the wrong side. Everyone looks and says "there's something not quite right about that guy's hair." but they're not exactly sure what it is.

Since the folks at the Fark Redesign F**k-up Committee don't seem to be paying attention...

I give up.

It's apparent that Fark is finished at least for me. It's usually the way it goes. I realize it's over then a year or two later the website or service shuts down for good or is bought out by some outfit to turn it into 'happy fun time pay service.'

I'll check in every few weeks and see if any positive improvements have been made, but I don't think there will be.

Dear Drew,

WTF!!! Zone Alarm is telling me it is blocking a Spy Site when I get on your new and improved site? Just what I want, more Spyware/Malware.

Totally uncool of you,

That's strange. I thought I noticed an increase in speed when I ran Stylish. I assumed because the css was simpler WITH the fixed Stylish script.

I have to hand it to Drew, I have been lurking since before the lipstick on the countertop thread(one of the funniest thread), he finally got me to register and post a comment. Why did this go live before the window sticker was off? A simple day or 2 of a link to a Beta site would have avoided 90% of the OMG comments. My issues have been stated before but here goes:
1)When clicking on the main page to bring it back into focus the headlines as links is getting annoying. The link on the left worked just fine. Also it's annoying to realize that there are 4-5 new tabs when scrolling with the wheel
2)The major difference in the TFer/liter headers makes it look like the TFer is the parent of the liter comments and almost makes me want to skip over the liters comments when I am scanning the page quickly
3)Why does Drew hate us?

2007-04-27 10:13:09 PM
Looks and runs like ass, and for what? To accommodate that ridiculous 300x250 ad in the right-hand corner? Also the ad on the very top of the page DWARFS the actual logo for the website.

No, no, no slooser. None other than Drew himself (his blessings be upon you) stated clearly in the OP that: ...ads are not the focus of our site. Attentive readers will see what we just did there.

See!!!!!! Attentive readers -- ATTENTIVE READERS -- WILL have already seen what Drew (his dandruff glows in the dark) has determined that which they can see. Other readers can't determine that for themselves, as they are clearly inattentive.

That humongous GOOGLE AD (their perspiration tastes of honey) in the top-right corner is not -- IS NOT -- in any way related to this "redesign". Boy howdy, no siree Bob. It's all about the Farkers. Oh yeah. A-freakin'-men.

/Doesn't see web ads and never will.
//The developers of the Stylish FF add-on and the people who promoted it (and created useful configurations) here are gods amongst men. That's what a user-driven community looks like.

Drew, offering up Jeff to the mob was a really pansy move. That's just so... ugh, corporate. His simple comment was spot-on, and you shouldn't have batted an eyelash about backing him up.

2007-04-28 12:04:08 AM
Reiterating for truth:

The Avantgo/mobile page is hard to read. Dark gray background with black text doesn't work. Linking the headlines also causes problems when I use my device's scroll wheel to select and open the comments links. If links are on the same horizontal line IE will skip right over the second link.

Most mobile users aren't going to be reading the linked stories anyhow as the linked sites are very rarely mobile compatible. Mobile Fark users want to read the comments and then likely follow up later on.

Otherwise the site design is good. Much faster.

2007-04-28 12:37:57 AM
I wasn't planning on returning so soon, however, I wanted to mention something I noticed:

I didn't do much surfing today. I was doing other things in the real world and occasionally checked this thread, Fark, for improvments.

I just did my end of the day "cookies" cleaning. I leave some for websites I return to and trust, but delete the rest of the crap.

Considering I only visited maybe 5 websites (total) today, I have had a surprising increase in cookies. I didn't count how many I had, but it was almost twice as much as I normally do. Now I usually surf more than I did today, so why would I have more cookies?

I'm not blaming Fark for that, but I am suspicious. Someone who knows more than I should check it out just for the sake of curiosity.

Also to be noted, the page load speed is somewhat improved, although it is still rather slow. It's about 3 to 4 times slower than the 'Old' Fark design as it stands now.

My parting shot: I don't want the old Fark back, just something better than this. I don't think I am asking that much.

I'll be back if things improve.

2007-04-28 12:50:42 AM
Hi Drew, the new layout really should drop the colors in the tabs. I like the old design better. Even my html 0.1 skills tell me that looks bad.

Otherwise, it looks good, load time improved and it's the same fark just different.

Lastly, never let someone with a hot head, like me, respond in a forun like Jeff did. I know it's been said over and over but that was just BS. I'd loose my job if I said those things.

best wishes and drop fark TV, it's embarrasing

2007-04-28 02:22:03 AM
Can someone please take Sunny Ray out for a walk? I don't want him to crap all over this nice design more than he already has.

2007-04-28 03:24:44 AM
oregoncat: You know, a nice addition would be a little html editor for comments, like MySpace's blog editor. Not everybody speaks fluent html.

/but a spell checker would probably be asking too much
//Though Emma would be well worth the price, imho

Do as I was always told...and will tell anyone else that doesn't know something. RTFM! go to this little thing called google.com type in 'HTML Tutorial'. That should solve all your problems.

/Google is good, google is great! Google threw a noodle on your plate.

2007-04-28 03:48:59 AM
Came back to see if anything had been done. It's better but still sucks. Lose the white and center it.

Jeff's comments were funny but obviously enraged people. An apology and quick explanation from him would have solved that problem. If I were him I'd also want to step away from Fark for a while. Good for him.

Mike posting a quick message saying 'we hear you and are working on it' would have calmed everyone down. Instead we get one comment the next day with a half-assed update and then more silence.

Drew, your apology is late and a lame copout no matter what little bits of informing people you did. Looks like everyone here needs to learn to communicate better. Oh and the word 'beta' might help. Anyways fark this site. I'm off never to return.

/not that anyone cares
//I'll get over it and so will you

2007-04-28 10:33:09 AM
Not that anyone is gonna read this, considering how far down the monster-slow-loading thread it is, but I wanna update my opinion from my previous post here.

I've been occasionally biatching and moaning about not being able to join TF without using PayPal for quite a while now. Some kind TFer sponsored me for February, and by god, that was enough to make me start to re-consider my anti-PP stance. I probably would've succumbed and bought myself a TF subscription in the very near future --

but we'll never know now, will we? This new version of the site is just too off for me to wanna throw money at it.

Whenever Drew changes something just to placate potential advertisers, this site drops a little bit further into the shiatter. No boobies links on the main page, liters can't comment in those, no images in those...paid links, etc.

Fark, Fark, Fark...you had me and you lost me.

Not that you really give a damn. Obviously.

/adblock and/or stylish for the win

2007-04-28 01:12:27 PM
I know this has probably already been said 100x over in this thread, but please don't ban Jeff for too long. Things were blown a bit out of proportion.

And, in general, I like the redesign and the changes that have been made the past few days. The readability of the forums and the login name bars really need to be addressed. On the latter, changing the colors back to Red/Dark Blue for Unclicked/Clicked would really help there. :)

Thanks for providing such a great forum, Drew, and listening to feedback.

<b>The following is what I did to tweak the Styles and make the site generally more readable</b>

Thanks to those who started with this and those who created what I expanded upon.

Stylish code:

/* Code Starts Here */
@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);
@-moz-document domain("fark.com"), domain("totalfark.com") {
#headerTop,#footer,#rightSideRightMenubar,div[id^="rightAd"],

/*rightmenu imgs*/
#rightSideLeftMenubar>center,#rightSideLeftMenubar>br:not([style]),#rightSideL eftMenubar img[alt="Add to My Yahoo!"]
{display:none!important}

/*fix search box*/
#topSearch{top:0!important}

/*resize main area*/
#siteContainer,#bodyContainer{width:100%!important}
#bodyMainContainer{width:85%!important}
#bodyHeadlineContainer{width:100%!important}

/*fix right menu*/
#bodyRightSideContainer{width:auto!important;float:none!important;height:auto! important;position:absolute!important;right:5pt!important}

/*fix top menu*/
#topMenu{width:82.5em!important}

/*fix Comments Area background*/

#commentsArea{background:#eec!important}

/*Getting rid of unnecessary borders*/

.voteTable{border:0px!important}
#commentsHeader{border:0px!important}
#commentsHeaderTable{border-top-width:0px!important}

/*make everything match comments area background*/

.bodyHeadlineContainerNotNews{background:#eec!important}
#voteTable{background:#eec!important}
#headerTop{background:#eec!important}
#Mcontainer{background:#eec!important}
#headerTopSSL{background:#eec!important}
.bodyHeadlineContainerNotNews{background:#eec!important}
.commentPostingTable{background:#eec!important;
border:none!important}
.cpbox{background:#eec!important}

/*Slightly darker comments text input area*/

.commentsPostingAreaInput{background:#ddb!important}

/*Getting Rid of the Jarring Red below Comments Box*/

.notifyBigBrother{background:#000!important;
border-top:2px solid #000!important;
border-bottom:2px solid #000!important}
#commentsPostingArea{background:#000!important}

/*TF versus Liter Box bar area colors, padding and borders,
Borders removed, but backgrounds mostly kept the same*/

.ctableTF{background:#669!important;
padding:5px!important; border:0px!important}
.ctable{background:#d3d3d3!important;
padding:5px!important; border:0px!important}

/*Increase Date Size in Author Bar*/

.cdate{font-size:1.0em!important}
}
/* Code Ends Here */

In addition to the above, I've added the following two image URLs to Adblock:

http://img.fark.com/images/2007/site/bodyGradientNotNews.gif
http://img.fark.com/images/2007/site/bgHeaderMainGradient.gif

Tips for those who want to change the comments area background, modify everything that says "#eec" to a colour of your choosing. Modify ALL background code above to match so that the general colour remains consistent throughout the page. The colours I'm gonna be using are going to be different, but for now, everything that I had issues with has been fixed and now can be tweaked upon further. Enjoy.

So I take it the official statement given to people who have real complaints about Fark is still "You'll get over it" ?

Because I don't see a majority of the complaints being addressed at all...

And I'm fairly certain they never will be.

2007-04-28 11:45:04 PM
Y'know, not responding to our complaints is probably their best move at this point. If they've already decided not to change anything else, or not to admit to any "mistake" (and that's a judgment call, of course), to respond to comments would be counterproductive. Just saying "no" over and over would lead to even more get-over-it-like misinterpretations.

(for the record, although the "get over it" comment was ill-considered, I think the reaction has gotten out of all proportion)

You'll get over it.

Wait... THAT'S the comment that people have been getting up in arms for? Jeebus Boobie Farking Flying Spaghetti Monster!!! Haven't people grasped the concept of change? Is it really THAT hard to accept? Did they try to cut out their genitals when they hit puberty just because OMGWTFBBQ they CHANGED?
He's right. You'll get over it.
I like the new design, loads a bit slow right now, but I've accepted the fact that someone will be working on the loading issues.
Good jeeorb on everything Crew.

Having done about a half dozen rewrites, many of them much larger sites, or at the very least much more complex sites, I can say this is an example of how NOT to do things.

Here's what went wrong, in no particular order:

The website looks like someone just learned about this crazy thing called CSS and this is his/her first experiment into that wacky realm.

The change does stink of trying to increase banner ad revenue.

That raving article about Drew bumming cigarettes and biting the hand that feeds him comes to mind and it rings true. There's nothing special about fark except...

The frathouse hivemind was just disrupted. That was pretty much the only thing fark had going for it.

Drew et al. Take sound advice. Hire someone to do this. Get five templates per vendor and purchase the one that looks the best. That part is simple. What you don't want to do is hook up your friend who's set up this most awesome myspace page and and and...

2007-04-29 03:35:48 PM
What Happened? I was gone for a week to buy a new house, and the site changed.

2007-04-30 12:49:21 AM
Is this thread still going? Isn't everyone over it yet?

2007-04-30 01:34:42 AM
Nope Larva Lump, because the redesign sucks and most *regular* Farkers are unhappy with it.

2007-04-30 11:26:20 AM
gweilo8888, I'M STILL NOT OVER IT!

I'm becoming a newt.

2007-04-30 03:43:19 PM
Well at least we can all be satisfied when Drew gets that Bigass check from whatever corporate buyer he has lined up to take over the site...

2007-04-30 05:08:34 PM
I've noticed something with the new format..

I can't right-click and copy another farker's text to quote anymore. At least, not without having to copy a majority of the thread.

I didn't have this problem with the last format.

Please fix!

Could you please make WalkingCarpet a designer here. All of his ideas have been great.

2007-05-01 09:58:39 AM
OMG, I end up in the hospital for a few days and come back to this?

It's like Cousin Oliver is drinking New Coke while watching Speed 2: Cruise Control on a Beta Max.

I quit.

/I loved you Fark, but you changed.
//One last slashie.

2007-05-03 03:42:02 PM
Without the functionality of Farky, I can't remember where I have been and what I wanted to return to. The redesign has made Fark too difficult to use.
