You know... this is going to sound really stupid, but I'd just like to say that I'm hella thankful right now to be able to read all these funny "you'll get over it" posts.

Thanks Jeff!

Perhaps you haven't actually read much of Fark in the two months you've been here?

I haven't read all the comments, so this may have been suggested, but how about a css contest?

Put the winners in as CSS choices that users can select and get Fark their way.

I can't stand the magic appearing/disappearing underline trick. Seriously, links should be underlined all the time, just so you can tell what's a link and what isn't--and if you can't do that, then at least don't make the underlines come and go.

One question:

"Ban talk: Temporary and permanent actions taken by Fark on individual Fark accounts are between the user and Fark and should never be discussed in threads. Ban talk inevitably leads to misinformation and misunderstandings. If you have a question regarding actions taken on your account, contact Farkback. Please note that just as Fark Moderators/Admins will not discuss actions taken on other users' accounts, neither should you discuss (on site or in Farkback) actions taken on other Farker's accounts. If it is not your account, it is not your business. This includes without limitation: discussing banned Farkers, campaigning for the reinstatement of banned Farkers, posting on behalf of banned Farkers, submitting links regarding bans or banned Farkers, or discussing other user's accounts in threads. Again: don't discuss bans, banned Farkers, moderation, Moderators, Admins or anything else related to moderation in the threads."

Since nobody ever answers Farkback, how can you expect people not to complain publically when you ban them for (in my case) something so simple as posting a relevant anti-war comment in a thread about the soldier whose face was blown off (and got married to his high school sweetheart)? I got banned for like a week just for saying something anti-war, then when I followed the rules and complained to Farkback, nobody said jack. So if you're going to keep this rule about "no ban talk," the least you could do is actually communicate with the people you censor.

I guess I'm the only one that is liking the new site.

2007-04-26 04:49:15 PM
I thought I was just having a long day yesterday when my head was hurting. I've been here for 20 minutes today and my eyes and head hurts. I think it is the purple bars between the comments, but I don't know.

I've gotten used to the main page, and like it for the most part.
I don't like the comments. My vote would be to get rid of the different colored purple bars and put a margin on the left side of the comments (too close to the side of the screen, 50 pixels would go a long way)

Why is everyone pissed at Jeff? All of you all have said far more snarky things than that. Quit being wusses.

The left-hand read is already giving me a crick in the neck.

Here's a nifty trick:
1. Click the Restore Down button on your browser window (if your browser isn't full screen then skip step 1.)
2. Drag the right edge of the window to the left so that all of the ads are covered and only the comments show.
3. Drag the entire window to the middle of your screen.

Voila! Comments are centered and no pesky ads to annoy/distract you.

/really wish my Farkit didn't get broken.
//I get this message: "Farkit Error: Can't determine user being quoted. Fark's HTML may have changed."
///ya think?

It seems that Jeffs comments yesterday were removed. I really wanted to read what he said in context and judge for myself.

Drew,

There are probably 5,000 web designers and developers among your userbase. If you would have just ASKED FOR A LITTLE HELP in redesigning it (before actually doing it) I'm sure you would have gotten tremendous positive feedback and amazing buy-in from your users. Start with a Survey thread, telling people what your needs are (more ad-space, less clutter, etc.) and asking for comments and suggestions. A week or two later run a Photoshop contest asking for designs, with a $100 prize for the vote-winner and a $500 prize for the person whose design you selected (possibly the same person). Much cheaper than a hiring a professional design firm, and you'd honestly probably get better results.

Wouldn't it have been nice to have all of the complaints taken care of before you went public with the new design? Nobody gets ticked off, nobody yells, the mods don't have a three-day headache to deal with, nothing.

All in all this transition was not handled very professionally. Even Jeff's comments didn't even irk me all that much (snark is part of Fark, after all), but scapegoating him is clearly unprofessional.

How you handle it is your business, because it's your site, but I think that Fark would do well to invest more time discovering what features its users want, and then implementing them, or communicating why features can't be implemented. This site is about community. People like to feel needed in any community. If you make the users feel like Fark truly needs them, Fark will prosper.

And no, I'm not leaving. Fark could be in braille and I'd still be here.

Cheers.

2007-04-26 04:50:09 PM
Ok there is about 8000 posts and I'm not reading them all, but I have one question. Did Jeff get suspended as an admin for saying "You'll get over it"? And if this is all he said and Farkers got all in a hizzy about it, WTF! A lot of you are a bunch of pussies.

Drew Let Jeff have his admin rights back.

2007-04-26 04:50:28 PM
Never saw Jeff's rant, so can't comment on that.

Placement: Triple the left indent on the comments section, should match amount of space on right.

Contrast: Still too high, recommend making the background off white/light grey, like the background around the (Login, Password, Comment) text entry section.

Ads: Right hand placement is ok, but they float insidiously on top of text if I try to resize the page. Ugh, a way to charge more for ad space? Inevitable I suppose.

Attitude: Like I said, didn't see the rant, but if you want to convince me that Fark is changing its attitude towards the userbase, you'll stop letting admins re-label and re-tag submitted links. The submitter's original description should stand.

"People were complaining and he responded with "You'll get over it."

Then he made another comment saying "Remember the last three times we changed the site's design and everyone moved to Canada and stopped coming? Didn't think so.""

And people got upset / offended / hurt by this?

2007-04-26 04:51:42 PM
Way too much client-side processing. Firefox has locked up on me several times while trying to use the new site.

But you all had better get over it because we ain't completely over this shark yet. It's all too bad really. But the writing has been on the wall for a long time.

Drew, sell the site as quick as possible. Online forums come and go. The people make the site while you just sit on your butt and reap the rewards. There's no way I would "admin" for free at a commercial website. They must be rich already or have a lot of free time.

I've lurked for years and I can already tell you that I won't be hanging around long on a community forum in which the owner is doing everything he can to make it marketable so that he can sell it out.

Nothing wrong with doing that, it's just not my cup of tea. Good luck with the sale and advertising. Hopefully you can continue to prosper from the talents of others.

Well, my two cents:

It's looks A LOT better than it did this time yesterday. My eyeballs no longer bleed and it's wide enough to make sense on the screen, so kudos on your fix.

I think I can live with this redesign now. Sure it looks all wonky from what I'm used to, but it's no longer painful.

Now I just have to restore my farky, farkit, and farkode and I will be a happy camper.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people are so frightened of change. In five years when the layout changes again many will be cursing the new design and asking to change back to this one. Pretty classic human nature. It's a wonder we evolved at all. Oh wait, many of you think we didn't. Things are really beginning to make sense now.

China_Vagina: The internet altogether feels differently today and I suppose things like Digg might be an acceptable if boring substitute for the Fark we all knew and loved.

THbbbpppttt hahahahahahaha.. that's rich. Try sitting on Digg for an entire day reading rehash upon rehash of old stories and then when you're tired of that, try reading some of the comments. Or better yet, try making any sense out of what people were thinking when they Thumbs-Up or Down the comments. That shiat gets old REAL quick.

What's with this 2.0 business? The way it was last week was 2.0.

I hated the look, I wanted to go back to the way things looked when I started on computers:

sirpilsofd: And if this is all he said and Farkers got all in a hizzy about it

it's not so much what was said as the perceived attitude behind it. People were giving constructive criticisms of the new design and he basically said too farking bad, deal with it, you (the users) don't matter.

he could've tossed a ";)" in there and most would've shrugged it off as a joke or half-assed troll.

There are definitely MORE ads...Over on the right--but more ads. I think a lot of this redesign had to do with making room for more IAB standard advertising space, especially the almighty (and pricey) 300x250 ad.
