I love pop-up ads... I hope my ISP doesn't block them... Nothing I like better I tell ya'

They will be out of business before anybody even knows it, they will not be able to cover their operating cost and they are going to start this off by going 10 million in the hole on advertising (a little ironic how they are going to use advertising to show how they are blocking advertising. so instead of it being on the web we'll now see 30 earthlink commercials an hour on TV, a fair trade off), not to mention the fact that other major websites that use popups as a source of revenue will all get together and some how find this unconstitutional, laugh but they'll flip it and say it infringes on freedom of speech and this type of blocking may lead to ISPs to blocking more from the user and maybe or maybe not snowball into the ISPs telling what you can and can not see on the internet.

People should just use Opera or Mozilla. You can turn em off in those browsers, pieceacake.

Ive not seen an orbitz or YOU WIN or webcam add in weeks.

Nuff said.

2002-08-20 01:27:05 PM
Good for them. Pop-ups are farking annoying (or at least, they were before Mozilla)..

2002-08-20 01:27:21 PM
Popups or not, Earthlink is still run by scientologists.

I'll stick with Mozilla for all of my popup killing needs.

2002-08-20 01:27:24 PM
I had an Earthlink account for over a year. I got maybe 4 spam emails.
Them's good people over at Earthlink.

(tried to post that an hour ago)

2002-08-20 01:27:31 PM
as someone who used to work for those corporate nazis I'm sure they're gunna charge for it as well

2002-08-20 01:31:40 PM
Doesn't Earthlink have strong ties to Scientology?

2002-08-20 01:37:05 PM
Popup ads are slowly being replaced by much worse.. now you have these dang animated ads you can't turn off and they take over your browser.. grrrrr

I use a free popup stopper from
http://www.panicware.com

*Is glad he has Earthlink DSL*

Indeed....the service is very good.

2002-08-20 01:39:14 PM
i'm using it now...

it's not too good, it just has allow/disallow for sites/pages... and "open blocked pop-up when clicked a second time" for those wanted javascript ones...

Trunks: Unlike AOL and MSN, Earthlink does not derive a great portion of revenue from pop up advertising of any kind, so doing this won't hurt them in the least and in fact may bring them more customers of the AOL kind who have no clue how to stop the pop up ads (Most of them don't understand what freeware is and how you can get it).

Kudos to EL for starting the anti pop up revolution on the ISP side.

And yes, Sky Dayton is a Scientologist.

2002-08-20 01:39:25 PM
I heard a Scientologist read the Bible once. That means they have strong ties to the Pope! Burn em all!

Seriously though, I think it's a good, if vain, effort to get the masses to see the possibilities available. Remember that 99% of webusers dont know anything except "IE" or "Netscape" and will blindly follow any pirated or insecure link you send them. If it doesn't work (i.e. Earthlink doesnt sway a bunch of customers to them), oh well, try something else. If it does work -- expect to see similar offerings from others (MSN and the mom & pops), although AOL and United Online would have to make some serious changes since a good bit of their revenue is from push ads out to users.

2002-08-20 01:40:51 PM
Doesn't matter. Earthlink and AOL are both going down the crapper, one just faster than the other.

2002-08-20 01:43:36 PM
I don't care if the CEO worships Judy Garland...they don't sell your email address and in a years time my service went down...once...during a thunderstorm.
(But I heard they're in an old building and the basement floods, no joke)

2002-08-20 01:46:05 PM
FWIW, and even though they suck ass, AOL started blocking pop ups about a month and half ago. This was Earthlink's response.

2002-08-20 01:47:56 PM
If users want pop-up ads, they can turn the new feature off, Anderson said.

I think you can leave that out in ver 1.1...

2002-08-20 01:51:24 PM
I hate dial up, but since I have lost my cable modem over a year ago. I have not had on tiny problem with Earthlink. I have been connected for over 12 hours at a time on many many occassions playing everquest. Nothing to diss about their service here.

2002-08-20 01:54:10 PM
edit: it sucks, i have to double click everywhere that opens a new window, like on a fark headline :(

2002-08-20 01:58:16 PM
I use Earthlink for my Satellite Internet and rarely get disconnected. Could not say the same for Qwest, when I had their DSL last year. Earthlink is definately a good ISP.

Tom Cruise says, "Scientology cured my pop-up ads."

2002-08-20 02:03:32 PM
Pop-ups suck. Go to panicware.com and download the free version of pop-up stopper. Very simple and very effective.

2002-08-20 02:04:18 PM
2MuchC0ffeeMan,

Are you the same one from Isonews?

2002-08-20 02:11:19 PM
I have earthlink and was told that I could stay on for 12 hours at a time, uninterrupted. NOT TRUE. 20 minutes, tops, unless I'm ACTIVELY surfing. And yes, I have idle disconnect disabled in a million different places. Yesterday I got disconnected while I was opening an email attachment. Who cares about pop-ups, how bout letting me stay on line?

2002-08-20 02:20:42 PM
Earthlink's CEO, Sky Dalton(sp?) is a Scientologist.

2002-08-20 02:21:41 PM
"I don't care if the CEO worships Judy Garland...they don't sell your email address and in a years time my service went down...once...during a thunderstorm."

Somehow I doubt that a cult dedicated to the worship of Judy Garland would kill, lie, steal, spy on the government, and operate a slave labour gulag.

If you are happy with all the many things that scientology does, go ahead and stay with EarthLink.

If not, refuse to support the cult by not doing business with scientologists!

2002-08-20 02:27:12 PM
You have to look and see who they are targeting. Dumb ass AOL users (who in spite of mentioned above, do NOT block pop ups, hell they even make their own pop ups when you log on.) for switching services. Of course there are a bunch of pop up blockers already, but not everyone is web geeks like we are and all they see is BLOCK POP UPS. Trust me smart business move here. Nothin funnier when web geeks get mad, like Earthlink is movin in on their geekness territory.

2002-08-20 02:35:23 PM
Simmer down there Nietzsche...
I cancelled my service with them as soon as Bellsouth made home networking a little easier. I also don't think the majority of EL employees are liars/killers/thieves/spys/gulagoperators.

Believe me a cult dedicated to Judy Garland would be a scary, scary thing. Might make more sense than a cult dedicated to a bad science fiction writer.

2002-08-20 02:40:23 PM
Earthlink is run by ex Mindspring'ers in Atlanta. Note when the merger of those two occurred the HQ is Atlanta not Pasadena. I think the scientology connection ended if there was one to begin with.

2002-08-20 02:41:10 PM
They might not be scienos themselves, but the money EL receives from you can fund scientology (it's extremely expensive to rise through the cult's ranks, members end up spending nearly 400,000 dollars at the later levels) to commit the aforementioned crimes.

2002-08-20 02:42:43 PM
A Judy Garland cult would be scary, no doubt about it. I just think that it would be mostly harmless.

I'm quite sure that many EL employees are not scientologists and I am also quite sure that most scientologists are basically decent people. Unfortunately their money gets funnelled up to the top where the truly insane criminals are.

2002-08-20 02:46:48 PM
Lunatic Tassle -that doesn't mean it's earthlink's fault...there's lots of things it could be

2002-08-20 02:51:13 PM
I'm already using a great free pop-up stopper, Free Surfer mk II, found here: www.emsproject.com/FS/Support.htm

Lunatic Tassle
I never had that problem. It could be worse. My dumbass brother has AOL (against my advice) and he has to dial AT LEAST 3 times before he can get a connection, every time he signs on.

2002-08-20 02:55:48 PM
Use the Proxomitron, goddamnit.

2002-08-20 02:56:16 PM
I had AOL for seven years (since my family didn't know how to use anything else). We tried to get broadband for our house (I'd set up a 100mbps ethernet ahead of time), but AOL had hardware-and-software prohibited networking of their DSL modem. Of course their staff had no farking clue about how to network with their DSL. Plus, the modem only worked at half the speed they promised because we were "too far from the phone company hub," or something like that.

So we got Earthlink cable (through Charter Communications) the next DAY, it goes at twice the speed of the AOL modem, costs the same, and has worked absolutely fantastic since day 1. My grandpa is even using our Earthlink *dialup* account, so we could cancel his AOL account too. :D Oh yeah, take it AOL.

2002-08-20 02:56:59 PM
Family knows the founder of Mindspring here in atl. He's not a wacko.

2002-08-20 03:00:55 PM
matsui, fwiw, AOL HAS blocked pop ups for the last month and a half.
I've pointed out elsewhere that I work in interactive media and AOL made it a point (just prior to Pittman leaving) to eliminate pop ups, due to member response.
Apparently, their new version will be designed to block pop ups even OUTSIDE AOL (though they are effective at that right now).
As I said, I don't like AOL any better than anyone else, but you have to recognize them for their efforts.
Another point worth mentioning is that their software, even prior to the last month and a half, enabled users to block pop ups if they chose to. They just didn't let them know where to find the buttons to click, sneaky bastards.

For disclosure, I don't use AOL, I have cable connectivity. But my brother and parents DO use AOL, and I have friends who work there. Media is a tiny industry.

2002-08-20 03:01:12 PM
my earthlink dial-up sucked hard. the ISP they took over had much better service. long live Rural Connections! or something.

*goes back to his Mediacom cable-led surfing*

2002-08-20 03:02:25 PM
Well then I don't know why it's happening to me. I've rigged my dial up connection, I've rigged my earthlink account according to instructions from tech support. Maybe I've overtweeked everything. Alas, I do live in Florida, where the phone lines here are made of twine.

2002-08-20 04:09:17 PM
there are quite a few scientologists in the earthlink family however the key differance between aol and elink is not religion. it is the fact that elink works, where as aol sucks and makes your computer crash fairly regularly. aol will be the next big buisness whose financial practices become suspect.

2002-08-20 04:12:08 PM
The internet sucks!

2002-08-20 04:57:51 PM
Fish500 -

Shouldn't that be "Teh Internet suxx0rs?"

2002-08-20 05:39:20 PM
Going on past two years of good service.

2002-08-20 05:46:13 PM
Earthlink sucks....I used to use their service, and then got an e-mail saying their service was staying "Unlimited Time for $19.99 a month*"....asterisk said "Over 100 hours a month is considered excessive, and will be charged by every extra hour used"....I wrote back asking this, and got an e-mail saying "Most customers didn't use anywhere near 100 hours a month" and I wrote back asking "Then what the hell is the problem?!" and then my e-mail stopped working.

2002-08-20 06:40:23 PM
JDignan:

Huh. I didn't realise that >100 = "unlimited". So I guess that means I have unlimited money in my bank account since there's >100 dollars.

OR

It means that you can only use the internet 4 days out of the month. That's nice. Do they call you up and let you know when it's your turn to use the internet?

2002-08-20 06:43:41 PM
in OT3 you have to Mock Up a pop up add while using tone 40.
