I read this headline and was confused. Then I read the article and was even more confused. So I'll just make some random, generic comment about Confederate flags and racism and leave it at that.

Anyone should be legally allowed to shoot any person displaying the confederate flag. and the second someone makes any bit of a loop hole when this can be done, i'm taking off work and killing me some rednecks.

"Kind of like the Confederacy, you lose again," Glover said. "You lose today, you lose tomorrow and you'll lose the next time you come here with any similar thoughts along that line."

Tell us how you really feel Mayor.

I would suggest that it is politically smart for an African American Mayor in the south to embrace "Confederate Heritage" otherwise he risks alienating a large segment of the white population.

/A black man even a redneck can vote for!

As much as I hate any kinda nationalism ideology crap like that, what's wrong with the confederate flag? My sister and her husband have that thing all over their car and a few places 'round their house.

Doesn't really offend me since, from what I remember from school anyway, that the Civil War wasn't about freeing the slaves until people were losing interest in the war and Lincoln had to muster up some lovin' for the war. Wouldn't it be safe to say then, that the flag really is a part of their 'history' even though they lost? Hell, that's like saying all the Puerto Ricans and other immigrants who move to the 'States and display their flag in their car/whatever pride piece they're wearing, are 'ignorant' or whatever.

Tresser obviously has some redneck rage or something. Possibly his own redneck tenancies to scratch his ass in public and watch Nascar make him a bit self loathing.

But, whatever. Confused rant over.

I don't believe this. If anything, Fark has taught me that those people all think alike. There is no way that two black people could feel differently about something. Every Farker knows that.

The Confederacy was about more than just slavery and Redneck Comedy Tours, you know? But I'm sure we should just outlaw it anyway...

... because we all know who else wanted to erase all traces a targeted heritage from the face of the Earth, don't we?

I came here to say the same thing. He's black, not stupid. If he wants to get re-elected, he needs to appeal to the "Confederate Pride" base even harder as a black guy.

I just wonder if Subby would do a "double take" if some White Mayor refused to heed a request by two "White Activists" to rescind MLK Jr. Day or something?

Ric Romero wants you to know that "Black" isn't a political party...I'm sure this is baffling to you, but they actually *can* disagree with each other on stuff.

Aside from the obvious bits that've already been pointed out (pandering to voters, etc.), the mayaor's comments seem to indicate that he's not gonna cowtow to thin-skinned nannyists that would rather supress any bad thing that ever happened in history.

I'm no fan of anything Confederate in nature, but still, thumbs up to the mayor for standing his ground and being a strong-enough person to not allow petty predjudices (on either site) to sway his judgement.

Well, as a citizen of the United States of America, you're displaying the flag of a traitorous country who killed hundreds of thousands of our soldiers.

I just find it Ironic that a good chunk of people who get *really* pissed at Immigrants (legal or no) who proudly display their (e.g.) Mexican Flags, are the same people who have Confederate Flags everywhere.

The major is probably smart enough to know that "heritage" tourism is a growing business in the US and since Shreveport isn't exactly flowing with money these days, he's willing to ignore a couple of media-baiting bozos in hopes of keeping those tourist dollars coming.

2007-04-25 01:10:06 PM
I like the reasoning the mayor and the councilman put forth in TFA to critically examine the town's confederate past, both good and bad.

"...help us do something that gives us pause to reflect on where it is that we are today"

There has to be some middle ground somewhere, where the area's culture and heritage can be celebrated while still acknowledging the mistakes and injustices of the past. I just hope it works they way they think it will on the ground.

The Homer Tax

And by putting American flags all over my car I'm displaying the flag of a country that's in over it's head and getting our soldiers killed as well as many alleged trrorists and other such people. I mean, if we can be proud about conquering a country 'for it's own good', why can't my redneck sister and brother-in-law display their flag displaying something that has to do with their heritage and love thereof?

2007-04-25 01:12:00 PM
The proclamation encourages "all citizens to study the history of the conflict and events in the years from 1861 to 1865 and to contemplate the actions of the citizens of Shreveport during that era."

Sounds like a racist agenda to me... I think the protesters mainly had a problem with it being called "confederate history month" but I don't see why anyone would have a problem learning more about a war that obviously continues to shape opinions in both the north and south. Before anyone says it only is remembered in the south, How many people here assume that anyone with a southern accent is stupid and racist?

/since when was learning more about history, good or bad, considered racist?

Blacks vs. Whites ...this is really getting tired. Can someone just get a clue that there is no difference we are all humans and that no matter color, race or creed we should all chill the fark out and get along. O and by the way Thank you "Rev". So the Mayor supports the citizens learning the history of the city? No farking way, that is absolutley crazy!! How racist and assbackwards can you get?

This is why I live in the northeast! We don't learn history because that's what racists do.

First: Good on the mayor for having a little backbone, and being willing to stimulate a discussion of a piece of history that is obviously very difficult for some people (on both sides of the issue) to discuss and deal with.

Second: Anybody who claims that the Civil War had NOTHING to do with slavery needs to do a quick re-read of their history books. The war certainly didn't have EVERYTHING to do with slavery, but it absolutely was a factor.

display their flag displaying something that has to do with their heritage and love thereof?

It's because while the confederate flag represents love of place and heritage, it also represents other things as well. When you put up a confederate flag without any context, you don't get to choose which part of the symbol people will associate with it. To pretend that the confederate flag is just about "heritage and love" is disingenuous.

Proctor: All right, here's your last question. What was the cause of the Civil War?

Apu: Actually, there were numerous causes. Aside from the obvious schism between the abolitionists and the anti-abolitionists, there were economic factors, both foreign and domestic--

Proctor: Wait, wait... just say "slavery."

Apu: Slavery it is, sir.

Tresser

Seriously, Tresser, your self loathing redneck behavior does not become you. And no, my Sister and her husband are proud rednecks. Power to them.

I'm a sociopath who's more along the lines of 'everyone's gonna die, so why take sides of one nation over another?'. Nice try at the insult though. Just another example of why you, and the rednecks you hate so much, are so similar! I love it! It just reminds me why it's important to smack those who get out of line with something heavy and blunt.

My Great-great Grandfather fought in the Civil War as a Confederate (8th LA Infantry, Company B). He was not a slave owner (he was a poor cajun); rather, he took up arms because his state needed him.
I grew up in California, and thus am largely free of the redneck "southern pride" possessed by many of my cousins. But I am proud of my ancestor and the fact that he fought to preserve the way of life that he and his family had grown used to (remember, it was the industrial north vs the agricultural south...). So, am I racist because I leave a CSA flag (not the battle flag) everytime I visit his grave? Should I pretend like the Civil War never happened and that my own blood comes from a confederate? Yeah, the south lost; but it is still inextricably a part of all of our histories.

Interesting take Bicycle Safety Tip, not sure what to think.

But

I see a lot of kids wearing hip "CCCP" gear these days. Occasionally I say "my grandfather died in Stalin's gulag, that symbol you wear is very insulting, it is no different than a swastika to me. In fact, maybe tomorrow I'll wear an SS badge."

I usually am greeted by blank stares. One coffee house guy stopped wearing his.
