It's not people with guns that will stop a bad guy (and keep in mind that I am all for the rights for people to have/carry guns); It's the people with balls. Even someone with a gun who doesn't have the balls to attack a bad guy is as useful as a poopy flavored lollypop.

Given that we're smack in the middle of a ghetto I'm not surprised at how well DPS handled it. We've had a couple weapons incidents on campus in the last year, including one dude with a gun holed up in one of the buildings. Before that some lady tried to steal a purse at knifepoint in the middle of campus in broad daylight. That didn't work out so well for her. Campus police and LAPD are pretty quick around here, within a mile of the school.

Also, here's the incident resolution notice they sent out. We get usually 3 or 4 crime reports to each notice, usually the reports are robbery, suspect approaches student from behind, shows weapon, demands property, runs off.

I read reports that one kid, an AFROTC guy, attempted to tackle him, but was killed while trying.

I'm sure it is a little easier to tackle a guy who isn't expecting it in a crowded party than to tackle someone who in an open room who is actively killing people. But that's just my opinion.

Wrestling guns away from threatening people is a pretty good skill to have in that neighborhood.

I think the VT thing will wear off faster tho - most people will be back to cowering behind the desks in a year or two.

Oh no, I agree totally - given a chance to run, I certainly would not be running down the hallway toward the gunshots - but if some of the stories are to be believed about the VT thing - he basically lined em up on a wall in one case - certainly in that case everyone (collectively) has a better chance of living if they all gang rush. Some are likely to die, but collectively more would live.

MortuusLupus: I agree that the situations (somewhat) are different. There have been many instances where people freeze. I am not sure why. The incident I am specifically mentioning is a restaurant shooting in NY where 10 people were killed (wow, I tried to find it, and I found a whole bunch of other restaurant shootings in NY).

I am not sure why people freeze, but I believe that anyone who has given it much thought beforehand, grew up in a bad neighborhood etc... has a much lower chance of freezing.
