A letter carrier refused to deliver mail to a friend of mine because the mailbox was on the porch and the dog was behind a screen door. The dog wasn't barking, it was just behind the screen door.
Did I mention the dog was a beagle named Precious?
And they never told my friend they weren't delivering his mail. He had to go down to the post office to find out.

I've got no sympathy for these folks.

The asshat dog owner needs to control his animal. If his neighbors want to have mail delivery resumed then they'll "encourage" the dog owner to control his animal.

The letter carrier's job is crappy enough without having to put up with people who refuse to exercise common sense.

FTFA: "But the Midvale postmaster said he's only trying to protect his mail carrier and the children in the neighborhood who play outside."

How the fark is suspending mail delivery supposed to protect the children? It sounds to me like they're inventing logic here.

Still, the dog owner needs to keep the dog fenced in at all times. If I were one of the neighbors, I'd be more pissed at the dog owner.

I'd basically tell this jerk, "Lock up your little fleabag, or buy us the mailbox, but do one or the other before the week is out, or we're calling animal control."

And, I'd follow through... for the children!

Fuuk people who let their dogs run loose.

Back when I lived in Oklahoma, I rode my mountain bike around town a lot for exercise. I was chased so often that I started carrying pepper spray. Yes, I had to use it numerous times. It got so bad that I finally went to a city council meeting to biatch them out about it. There were other people at that meeting, and I had a couple of people tell me after the meeting that they agreed with me. One even asked where I got the pepper spray...she wanted to start carrying it too, because of loose dogs.

Way I see it, you want your mail?

Act like it.

Everyone always "knows" that their dog is one of the good ones. They should walk around with the dog and tell everyone. Maybe have it on a leash at the same time, fat ass.

This crap happened to me. My mailman doesn't like that my Beagle can get his head over the fence when he jumps. So awhile back, my son let the dog get out of the yard just as the mailman drove onto our street. I had an errand to run, so I went outside, saw the dog, and got him back in. I drive off on my errand and here comes the dogcatcher into the neighborhood. Wasted trip. Then I don't get any mail for a week. I have to skip some work so I can go to the p.o. to see what's up. Along with my stack of mail is a notice that says in order to get mail delivered again, I have to sign a paper that says if my mailman ever gets a burr in his ass again, I'll have to rent a p.o. box. I like the USPS but my mailman is a dick and he will get no Xmas gift from me.

I have to deal with asshats like this all the time on my delivery route (package company, not USPS). Too many people think their dog is harmless. A lot of time, it isn't the bite, it's the bruising afterward. If a small dog gets you on the ankle, then every step you take for a week is painful.

We had one person in our terminal who was attacked two years ago by a loose dog after the owner told him it harmless. He got three surgeries, hundreds of stiches and a finger that still isn't 100 percent. They got their dog executed and a nice fat lawsuit.

Buy a leash.

Give the mail carrier a quarterstaff. He can then call the dog owner a sissy when the dog limps home.

/Had a paper route once
//There's one of those dogs on every route
///And one dog owner like that

First off, yes the dog does need to be restrained. A dog (or cat for that matter) should never be allowed to roam loose. However, keep in mind even the most responsible owners will have their dog get loose once in awhile.

This dog didn't attack the guy, and it does sound like the guy is one big whimp. The article said the mail carrier ran away. WRONG MOVE! Even a friendly dog will chase you if you run, they think you're playing.

Once, my mom came over and accidentally let my male dog out as she stood and held the door open to talk to a neighbor. I was chasing the dog up the street when he spied a mail carrier (in shorts) approaching a door. The mail carrier had his back to us, so he never saw my dog coming. My dog gleefully ran up and licked the mail carriers legs. LOL, the mail carrier looked a little shocked, saw me running his direction and he reached down and grabbed the dog's collar.

2007-04-24 08:42:14 AM
all mail carriers should be licensed to pack some heat. dog busts out all growling and chasing BOOMF no more obnoxious dog. oh yeah and anyone who can't properly discipline a dog shouldn't be allowed to have kids.

As a meter reader for a gas company I find peoples undying ignorance in how their animal may a act around strangers frustrating. Some 98# woman trying to hold a 140# dog saying "It's OK. He hasn't killed anyone yet."
fark that.
Funny how most dog owners just can't imagine little poopsie trying to rip someone's leg off, but she'll try. While some of us door to door/yard folk may be a bit skittish around your little fluffy it's because once you've been attacked by a dog you get a little gun shy. It's terrifying to be stuck in some little yard and get attacked and bit by some big farking mutt with no training or people skills.
Try it sometime and see how much of a "pussy" you are around strange dogs after that.

2007-04-24 08:42:23 AM
Wait, who's the sissy?

2007-04-24 08:43:15 AM
"Dog people" are pretty much the most self-righeous, self-entitled bastards on the planet. There's no point in arguing with them. Even if "Precious" went on a rampage and ripped the throat out of a small child, they'd claim it was the child's fault for provoking their baby.

billdubsbud: It's terrifying to be stuck in some little yard and get attacked and bit by some big farking mutt with no training or people skills.

Heaven knows, I really prefer when the dog has the people skills enough to ask "May I sink my teeth into your thigh?" before just doing it...

I agree, the mail man is a sissy. Buy a can of mace if you're that threatened by a golden retriever (what it looked like in the photo). Sheesh...

2007-04-24 08:46:01 AM
Same thing happened in our neighborhood, asshat neighbors decided to let their vicious dog run loose, and we stopped getting mail (not to mention the fact that we were unable to use our own yard).

The mail carrier isn't a sissy. They shouldn't be expected to suffer dog bites or falls because some asshat owner doesn't think leash laws apply to their fluffy wuppy puppy dog. If they don't want to fence their dog in for the mail carrier's sake, they should at least do it for the safety of their pet. The dog is likely to get run over if he breaks free that often.

2007-04-24 08:46:57 AM
How the fark is suspending mail delivery supposed to protect the children? It sounds to me like they're inventing logic here.

USPS doesn't want to draw the dog off of the property. Mailman goes to deliver the mail. Dog gets pissed and chases. Mailman runs for it, kid gets in the way. Excited dog attacks kid. Not the most likely thing, but I can see it happening.

2007-04-24 08:49:28 AM
Seems to me like theres at least 2 vastly different (imho) scenarios in these responses:

Condition 1 : The propery has a dog which doesnt have access to the mail box because it is either behind a fence or inside the house - carrier decides to act like an asshat anyway - because if lightning strikes the tree in the backyard it might fall and allow the dog to get on the outside of the 5' high fence....

Condition 2 : Dog is loose but owner insists "don't worry she just ate someone last week and couldnt possibly be hungry yet"

choice and consequence: Excited dog attacks kid

Some people do not get it. The USPS better improve their service and attitude. They are alrady in great trouble due to e-mail, cell phones, instant text messaging and automatic bill pays.

We are so streamilined in our house, that if it is not a personal letter it goes in the trash. All we receive from the USPS is junk mail anymore. I get all my financial and bank statements online.

Also, one Christmas, while in college, I worked for UPS. You know how we took care of unruly dogs, one word, "GAINES BURGERS," worked like a charm. Your dog wants steak!

2007-04-24 08:50:58 AM
Do these dog owners know that their dog might be destroyed if it attacks and bites someone? For the good of the animal, it should be restrained and/or monitored at all times when it's outdoors.

And as for 'provoking' the animal by running, people shouldn't need a degree in dog psychology just to walk down the street or do their jobs without being attacked by an unattended animal.

Nugget's owners said their dog wouldn't attack anyone or even bite a person.

Isnt this what all dog owners say until their giant pitbull eats a child?

Seriously, tie up your damn dog or put him in the house. The postmans job already sucks enough.

To those dog owners who feel that people who don't want their dog running loose is a 'sissy', I say fine. I'm perfectly fine with you letting your dog run loose in the neighborhood. Just don't be surprised if you see me carrying one of these the next time I come to your house. Dog bites me, I shoot dog. Simple.

/what's the one thing I hate about my job the most? "Oh, don't worry, he doesn't bite." Yea, maybe he doesn't bite YOU, but I'm an intruder who he finds threatening.

When some asshat ruins your neighborhood mail delivery, why don't you get a mob together, beat him, rape his wife, and kill the f*cking dog?

2007-04-24 08:58:57 AM
How, exactly, is the letter carrier supposed to know which are the supposed "good" dogs and which are the ones that are going to attack him? It's smart to treat any loose dog as a threat until you know otherwise; it's not smart to treat any loose dog as a friendly one until you know otherwise.

Loose dog = no mail. Sounds fair to me.

1. Restrain your dog.
2. The USPS generally are a bunch of do nothing asshats who bend you over a barrel for any perceived tiny infraction.
3. A short story about USPS stupidity.
I park on the street in front of my house in my neighborhood. I park a good ten feet from the mailbox almost in front of my neighbors house because we stopped getting mail for a week when the mailman complained that he had to get out of his truck and walk 3ft to our mailbox. Having seen this dude, he looks like he could use the excercise. He's about 300lbs of pure lazy.

Dogs are dirty field animals that should only be used for herding sheep and/or hunting.

Kill the dog and get a cute kitty.

A car parked too close to a curbside mailbox will stop mail delivery in my town. The mail carrier had enough room to squeeze in and pickup/deliver my mail. However, he stopped for a moment then drove off. Didn't even bother to get out of his truck and leave a note.

Let's just say he isn't my mail carrier anymore. :)

I am a letter carrier and I can tell you that dogs are a major concern. A large section of our training was on how to deal with dog attacks.

Dogs are highly territorial and mailmen violate their space on a daily basis. When I'm not wearing the uniform I got no problem, but as soon as I put on the satchel the mutts go crazy.

A coworker of mine was recently bit on the hand by a pitbull which jumped high enough to get its head over the fence and to the mailbox which was hung on the front gate. I'm sure he enjoyed his Tetanus shot afterwards.

Its amazing how the average person has no idea how serious the situation with dogs and mailmen are, they just think its funny. I did too before I started working for the Post Office.
