"The bomb was 4 times larger than anything America has ever exploded."

That sounds like a DARE to me.

They don't compare to the nukes the Emperor Xenu used on the alien inhabitants he threw into the volcanos of Hawaii.

Why aren't we launching nukes into space and detonating them yet? The U.S. could 1 up everyone and keep it safe still. Good show for July 4th too.

When do we think Global Warming started again?

Didn't the Russians design a 100Mt bomb they were going to plant in a freighter as a doomsday weapon or somesuch?

Cant Let You Do That Star Fox: That sounds like a DARE to me.

Why would the US have bothered? It's much more efficient in all respects to use multiple small well guided warheads instead of one big one. The Tsar Bomb furthermore was practically useless, requiring a slow and specially modified bomber to carry it.

Wow, news from the past!

But seriously folks, this thing was pretty damn impressive. What's even more impressive though is that they had to tamper it down from it's 100-150MT potential down to only 50MT so as not to rip a hole in the space-time continuum. Or something.

RTFarticle: I bet a big enough explosion would open up some kind of fourth dimension. Perhaps that's how time travel is possible. Yes...

Okay -- so here's how it breaks down. We detonate about 50 of these babies in space, but enclose them in some kind of force field so all of the energy gets trapped and implodes on itself. Then things start to get weird. The anti-matter (dark matter/whatever) that is also trapped in the bubble is somehow disrupted and a portal opens up to Toon Land. Wild E Coyote comes flying out, because instead of running into the fake wall that the Road Runner set up, he runs through it, but comes into our dimension. He then devours everyone, and the chain of life is broken. The Lion King 3 comes out detailing this turn of events and overtakes Pirates of the Caribbean as Box Office Champion.

No literally it is the "Czar Bomb", not the "Emperor Bomb".

They did have that cobalt weapon designed to detonate automatically in the event of an attack. Thank Christ we were careful not to allow a mineshaft gap.

I believe it was freighter with a nuclear bomb on each end with fissionable material packed between. The fallout was estimated to be so great that everyone on Earth stood a good chance of death from it. The idea was it would be used if the USSR and the US were to be in a war that the US was apparently winning. It would be detonated as a last resort so that no one could win a la "If the Soviet way of life does not dominate the planet then no way of life shall!"

Supposedly Stalin called the plan crazy and had its designer killed or jailed (or something). Imagine a set of plans so extreme that farkin' Stalin thought it was nuts?

With all these atomic and hydrogen bombs going off over the decades adding their waste as well as shovelling dirt high up into the atmosphere along with all the factories and vehicles around the world adding more pollution to the problem it's no wonder the planet is killing itself with our fingerprint to blame.

Just think, Trinity the first nuke exploded was 20 Kt, this was 50 Mt. It would take 50 Trinity devices to get 1 megaton, and this was 50 megatons. Yep, 50 x 50, 2500 times the yield of Trinity.

This would be a colossally stupid thing to do. The EMP (ElectroMagnetic Pulse) generated from nukes exploding in space would fry most of the integrated circuit chips on the planet - and then where would we get our porn?

Ninjawitch: With all these atomic and hydrogen bombs going off over the decades adding their waste as well

Actually there weren't that many nukes of any sort set off in open air tests. And hydrogen bomb explosions only toss out as fallout what comes from the fision explosion that starts off everthing. The fusion part of it, well you fuse hydrogen together and you get helium. In the case of the Czar Bomb, while it was hugely powerful, the amount of actual radioactive fallout was very little.

drunkenmidnight: Aren't Czar and Emperor synonymous? Maybe not exactly, but related..?

"Czar", or "Tzar", is from the Latin root "Caesar", as are the terms "Kaiser", etc al. Taken from the name of the famous Roman general and politician Gaius Julius Caesar, himself.

"Emperor" is from the Latin root "Imperator". A title Caesar, as well as many other successful Roman generals were awarded with.

Close, but definitely not synonymous. One could be "Imperator" without being "Caesar". But one being dubbed "Caesar" was usually obligatorally given the title "Imperator". Thus the source of the modern day English equivalent of "Emperor".

The reason they made it that big is because they didn't have an accurate means of delivering their bombs. They made it really huge so the destruction would cover a larger area if they were off on their targeting.

The ban extends only to governments. It doesn't apply to private entities (such as Weyland-Yutani)
