grackle: Ah, the nanny surveillance state and the libertarian ideal coincide.

The libertarian ideal includes the defence and enforcement of property rights.

Well somebody has to pay for the police service. Just because you pay federal-state-income-sales-gas-social tax doesn't mean you get service.

Seems fair to me.

WBlows apparently the British are competing with the French to see how screwed up their country can become...

That's extremely unfair ... to France. It's a great place.

Yay! Now we can rob poor and homeless people without fear of going to jail. We'll have to increase the number of robberies to get the same dough, but that's ok.

All they do anymore is write speeding tickets and such. Real crimes, they do their best to avoid.

Agreed. The police are a tax agency/ clean-up crew. All they like to do is ride around and hope they get into a chase. You can only rely on yourself for protection.

The libertarian ideal includes the defence and enforcement of property rights.

Just as long as someone else pays for it.

Dear Britain,
You used to be cool. You had the individual liberties and relatively competent and not too overbearing government thing down. You and I used to be pretty similar actually. Well, we did take a lot of your law. I don't know what happened, but you just are not the same anymore. You're not the same country I knew. I think it's time we started seeing others.
Love,
America

@Counter_Intelligent

Nope, defense, policing, and a judiciary that will enforce liberty are the government programs for which a libertarian will pay. I, for one, do not mind this system so long as the police are routinely successful and the civil courts award these costs.

Wouldn't hold out much hope for the tape deck, though. Or the Creedence.

theFrakamazog: Oh crap. Don't give the US any ideas.

Don't worry, as usual the UK has gotten it all backwards. Here in the US we pay the cops to IGNORE crimes.

Not paying cops would be socialist, and socialism is always bad, right farktards?

Now when I recover a stolen vehicle, I go for prints. The office won't let me do other trace evidence as a DNA test runs about $8k and OSP Crime labs won't even accept the evidence without a named suspect on a C-Fel offense.

No disrespect for OSP Crime Labs, they have 100 people processing evidence for every agency in the state of Oregon. It's not like they have a ton of time on thier hands.

So if you're into car theft, come to Oregon! Sure it's a pain for car owners and our insurance rates suck as a result, but we saved a ton on taxes, right?

/Law enforcement only for those that can afford it rocks. Who's with me?!

My father's car was stolen a few years ago. He got it back with about $150 damage, but had to pay near $300 to get it out of impound. I wonder who the real thieves are.

Although we sort of laugh and make fun of this type of ongoing sillyness, there is a real problem in Britain with crime and the government's continued (non-)response to it.

Here's a nice little synopsis written by a British Doctor who pens commentary about contemporary British society and its growing ills.

Dammit! I read the whole thing, and I'm pretty sure Doctor Who never wrote it.

nm: Don't they already charge you for storing and towing if your car is recovered in the US? I'll bet that costs at least $200.

My experience with various LE agencies is that the victim will not be charged. That's part of the contract set up with tow companies. The police will also not do forensic investigation of property crimes (GTA, burglary, etc.) unless a violent crime was also commited (robbery with your car, stabbing during the burglary, etc.)
