Why is it that states like the Dakotas with the highest number of guns per citizen have the lowest amount of gun crimes per citizen?

This would be because of a certain demographic. This demographic also explains why the UK and US have quite similar murder rates once you make adjustments for given segments of society.

The vast majority of gun murders in the US is simply thugs and gangs killing each other. I say you should give them better arms and then seal the hoods and barrios.
