(Crooks & Liars)   After Columbine, Tom Delay blamed the shootings on science classes teaching evolution. Surely, we've learned from past idiots, right? Well... a day after the VT massacre, it appears not   (crooksandliars.com) divider line 639

What is it with the asshats who use tragedies to play attention whore for thei tinfoil hat beliefs?

2007-04-18 09:57:33 AM
I noticed Tom Delay was on O'Reilly's show Monday night. The sounds was down, so I didn't hear what he said, but since the whole show appeared to be about the VT tragedy, I'm sure is was some horseshiat right-wing political lie. It's Tom Delay, for Christ's sake.

If I'm wrong, I don't care. Tom Delay can still DIAF.

By DeLay's logic, why wouldn't kids feel insignificant after learning that God controls everything, then turn against the Lord? Oh, and not to mention, but isn't evangelicalism about surrendering yourself to God? Why wouldn't that sense of powerlessness send some people over the edge?

Sorry Tom, you're out of your element.

I thought the conservatives were the party of personal responsibility?

clifton: I thought the conservatives were the party of personal responsibility?

Psst... personal responsibility just means you should kick poor people when they're down. It doesn't apply to Christians or GOPers.

2007-04-18 10:59:13 AM
Speaking of which... I have seen some murmurings cult of personal responsibility about how there were no victims in Blacksburg, that the people who got shot were sheep because they weren't packing heat. Remember kids, "personal responsibility" means that there's no such thing as a victim. Unless you're Tom DeLay, then it's okay to Godwin yourself.

2007-04-18 11:06:35 AM
Woo, it's goin' green. Which means we'll have loads of people defending DeLay in everything he does.

I defend Tom DeLay in everything he does. He's a good man who has been victimized by the far left slime machine.

Nonstory. Criminalization of crime.

I came in here to say that.

Wouldn't these things happening "prove" evolution exists? Most of the evolutionary theories on aggression point to pathetic people who can't mate feeling the need to get rid of competition.

You would think that if we were intelligently designed, we wouldn't go killing each other. More importantly, this guy would've been stricken with an incurable illness before he could kill everyone, while kids in Africa wouldn't be starving. At least that's what I would do if I were this divine guy creating a world. I'd also make the world big enough to support everyone and not allow people to ruin it.

But yeah, clearly the facts demonstrate that evolution is a myth.

2007-04-18 11:21:56 AM
Tom DeLay is pond scum.

I came here to say that!

It's like that guy in the Jesus Camp movie who openly rejects science for GAWD! More of that "nation of feelers" bullshiat that will eventually be part of our undoing.

Well since it wasn't him, but just another nutjob I'd say he did learn.

LocalCynic, what the hell are you on about? Republicans have said no victims?

I've seen as many people on this site use the VT shootings to push their own party vs party arguments too, it's not just higher level.

2007-04-18 11:37:19 AM
I just... I... I mean... Wow... Just wow.

It's amazing how someone can look at an event and twist it to be evidence for whatever the fark they want it to be...

Nevermind that Darwin was a devout Christian.

I took science classes without God in them and I haven't gone on any rampages...yet.

The VT shooter was an English major, so he wouldn't know anything about science.

2007-04-18 11:39:31 AM
How about instead of the normal afternoon flame war, we change things up by presenting our arguments in the form of cats and owls performing a decorative song and dance number?

RadThad: The VT shooter was an English major, so he wouldn't know anything about science.

He was an English major at a tech school, so he probably didn't know much about English, either.

2007-04-18 11:40:52 AM
Someone. While he's up on the soap box telling us all we're going to burn in hell if we don't believe what he believes.

Slip a rope around his neck, and boot the box out from under him will ya?

It's a really good thing, then, that we never see mass killings by people who are fully indoctrinated in a religious belief system. Imagine the carnage in a places like the middle east if religious people were prone to blowing other people up.

Well, close enough for crazy people, anyway.

2007-04-18 11:41:27 AM
It's got nothing to do with evolution and everything to do with Lockheed Martin and the NRA!

Either that or I need to watch the old Chris Rock "whatever happened to just plain crazy" routine again.

2007-04-18 11:41:30 AM
It happens because people go off. Some people go on spending sprees, other people drop out of sight for awhile, and the rare person takes the rage out on everyone around them before going down in a hail of gunfire. It's not video games, it's not gun control, it's not immigration, it's not evolution: it's just the way people are.

I'll bet god gunned down those Amish kids for learnin' about evolution too. All yer fancy book-learnin' is lies!

2007-04-18 11:41:51 AM
At least with atheism, you don't have the arrogant idea that your God is the one and only true God and that you have the right to whatever you want in his name.

How many billions have died as a result of that thinking? Compared to the, what, dozens who have died in school shootings?

2007-04-18 11:41:58 AM
Down with biology... get rid of all the hospitals and medicine. Surely that's what God wants, humans with the life expectancy of 15-25 years and dying from easily treated illnesses.

2007-04-18 11:42:07 AM
it's still not as bad as the media creeps who are blaming the victims for being too scared to disarm the shooter.

2007-04-18 11:42:08 AM
Delay is farking crazy? Huh, you don't say...

2007-04-18 11:42:09 AM
If there were justice in the world, Tom Delay would be forced to do a year of community service living in the worst favelas of Rio de Janeiro while exterminating cockroaches and mosquitos in the shacks of his neighborhood.

2007-04-18 11:42:12 AM
Wasn't Cho an English major? And if studying biology turns people into raving mad murderers, why haven't we had mad shooting incidents at biology conferences or in the offices of Science, Cell, or Nature?

I just finished reading a Stephen Jay Gould book--somebody better put a net over me!

I blame the gays and femininiststs.

2007-04-18 11:43:40 AM
Actually, mr delay, the enlightenment and all of the definitions of modern science that come from that time stemmed from a desire to be able to understand the world in a way more meaningful that " god did it" . That mentality removes the human from the position of decision maker and makes them something defined and immutable.

Understanding something empowers you, worshiping something lessens you.

2007-04-18 11:43:44 AM
Don't you just love how all kinds of people with an agenda move in to exploit a tragedy like this? These assholes (and the people like Delay, and "Dr." Phil, and Jack Thompson) make me sick. I guess these professional liars know that people are at their most vulnerable when they're feeling emotional about something like this.

2007-04-18 11:43:48 AM
tonesskin: Wouldn't these things happening "prove" evolution exists? Most of the evolutionary theories on aggression point to pathetic people who can't mate feeling the need to get rid of competition.

There's also the elegant Vonnegut answer (from 'Galapagos'), that the big brain is an evolutionary dead-end.

I simply subscribe to the belief that this life and this world are all I've got, so I'd better make the most of them. It's not an empty feeling. It actually makes my life quite fulfilling.
