Unable, or unwilling?

2007-04-16 12:01:45 PM
I bet they could if they had to.

2007-04-16 12:02:18 PM
Commoner: unwilling

2007-04-16 12:03:01 PM
Subby, aren't you confusiong welfare and medicade with social security and social security disablilty. Are the added up together in this article? They are certainly not the same as welfare!

2007-04-16 12:03:01 PM
More than 50%? I have a hard time buying that.

2007-04-16 12:04:52 PM
Ok, let's toss out these people first:

Mr. Shilling's analysis found that about 1 in 5 Americans hold a government job or a job reliant on federal spending.

Though I am no big fan of big government, saying that people who work for the gov't or gov't contractors are on the dole is just stupid.

evulish: I have a hard time buying that.

Sounds like bullsh*t to me.

2007-04-16 12:06:49 PM
Oh lord yes we're on welfare because my husband works for a defense contractor. When I'm finished with school and teaching I suppose I'll be double dipping into welfare?

2007-04-16 12:08:08 PM
They counted people who have government jobs and students with federal education grants.

Not exactly welfare, subby In fact, not welfare at all.

2007-04-16 12:08:28 PM
Meh, eventually most of us will be collecting our paycheck for some service or other as employees of The Party. I plan on a bright future in boot production.

2007-04-16 12:09:22 PM
apparently people who are receiving education grants are on welfare too

also I wonder if "About 19 million others get food stamps, 2 million get subsidized housing, and 5 million get education grants" those count unique recipients or if 2 million people who are in subsidized housing are ALSO getting food stamps

2007-04-16 12:09:47 PM
All I want is the government to take of me and my Mexican yard guy.

2007-04-16 12:10:23 PM
That has to be one of the most inaccurate headlines Ive ever seen.

2007-04-16 12:11:22 PM
So having a government job equals getting free government cheese?

2007-04-16 12:13:25 PM
This is incredibly intellectually dishonest.

2007-04-16 12:15:46 PM
Wait...50%?

Ummmm, is it coincidence that 50% of America are Democrats?

2007-04-16 12:18:54 PM
Where is my Total Fark handout???? Oh yeah, I'm sponsored. Guess we count me as being on the dole.

dj_bigbird: Though I am no big fan of big government, saying that people who work for the gov't or gov't contractors are on the dole is just stupid.

I agree. It seems as thought the study has a very, very broad definition of dependency on the government.

So, Fark is kinda new to you huh?

In other news, 100% of government unable to survive without taxing 100% of citizens.

you can still be brave and free. just poor, brave and free.

See what I did there?

2007-04-16 01:41:54 PM
Yeah, screw those lazy old people and disabled veterans...world need WalMart greeters and high school crossing guards, too...

2007-04-16 01:44:16 PM
Nabb1: I agree. It seems as thought the study has a very, very broad definition of dependency on the government.

I don't think the guy even knows the definition of the word "dependant." Dependancy implies a one-way relationship - you get gov't $ no matter what you do. By that standard, no gov't employee can be considered "dependant" - they work for the money.

I'm with dj_bigbird. Sounds like this guy has a hair up his ass about people who want lower taxes and wants to make them out to be hypocrites. And naturally he comes off as a pretentious ass.

2007-04-16 01:44:18 PM
unable to survive

Incredibly misleading.

ZAZ: In other news, America would be a nicer place with half the population.

Actually, it would suck royally. Rich people need poor people in society. Who else is going to dig ditches, clean toilets, and serve food? And if you're a business owner, who else can you hire for $10 an hour to help your customers, sell your goods, and stock your shelves?

Society would come to an absolute standstill if the lower class suddenly disppeared.

The rich need the poor far more than the poor need the rich.

Gwendolyn: Oh lord yes we're on welfare because my husband works for a defense contractor. When I'm finished with school and teaching I suppose I'll be double dipping into welfare?

Oooh, a welfare queen!

2007-04-16 02:16:03 PM
We could solve any and all such problems very easily: People on welfare don't get to vote.

Think about it. If you were on welfare, wouldn't you always tend to vote for whichever politican always promised you more welfare money? Of course you would. So let's remove the conflict of interest.

I'm also ok with the idea of hitting corporations with the same beat down. Any corporation that gets a tax break or federal funding under any program can't contribute to a PAC. Individuals can still contribute as normal of course, but lower the donation cap to $500 max per canidate per year.

Same for government unions - no PAC contributions for government union workers. No execeptions.

right. there's the true spirit of democracy: disenfranchisement.

And buying votes is the true spirit of democracy?

Can't we all just get along?

2007-04-16 03:13:45 PM
I thought that "land of the free" meant that we got lots of stuff for free.

Amazingly bad headline!
You'd have to be a University student to actually believe this nonsense

2007-04-16 03:35:13 PM
GoDawgs!
of course. simply by disagreeing with Weaver, I was clearly advocating the selling of votes. Thanks for clearing that out for anyone who didn't catch that.

/sarcasm

Try reading your article there, Subby. Then maybe your headline won't suck so bad.

2007-04-16 03:46:40 PM
That was a farked up headline there subby. Though the article was worse for logic than the headline. So all your postal workers, federal officials, and even the President are on welfare!

That has to be one of the most inaccurate headlines Ive ever seen.

Doesn't even crack the Top 100. You should see some of my greenlit headlines.

Yeah, but if we go on wiping out half of the rest of the world the UN will start whining and that will set the Democrats off and pretty soon America will be too annoying a place to live in. Unless we nominate the Democrats as our 50%...

Society would come to an absolute standstill if the lower class suddenly disppeared.

Let's say we wipe out welfare recipients. Who's left? The low class people who can support themselves aren't receiving government assistance. We're also talking about bureaucrats and members of the military-industrial complex, if we wanted to implement 50% population reduction by targeting the government leeches the article describes. That's a diverse bunch.

And we could have one of those fun floaty bug-zappers from Logan's Run for people who reach retirement age and ask for social security.

good, let them die, more for me.

2007-04-16 05:20:32 PM
Hell, thanks to the government, I barely have enough $ each month as it is.

2007-04-16 05:20:40 PM
brave and free, ok. i'll give em that. it's a much better place to live than mexico etc. but it's also on equal par with at least a dozen other 1st world countries around the world.

it's all that "best country in the world" and "U!S!A! U!S!A! #1" crap that bugs me.

2007-04-16 05:21:37 PM
I receive no financial aid from the government and I wish more people would do the same.

2007-04-16 05:22:31 PM
Biggest welfare recipients are corpoations.

I don't get money to advertise my goods in Japan.

Christian Science Monitor.... Hrm, I smell a rat, and a flame war!
If these Christian Scientists really wanted to better the world they would stop collecting tithes and instead, put their income into support for the needy, like Jesus would have. Ah, but no, instead, they will collect their tithes and fund their hypocritc religion for ages to come. At the same time they will bash the dems who try to help the needy, which is ironic if you think about it. Anyway that's my $0.02

growinthings: They are certainly not the same as welfare!

actually,
"welfare" is being used as an umbrella term that includes social security and medicare.

and trust me, those programs are used by more than just nappy-headed crack hos and lazy welfare moms. Look around you at the grocery store, any sidewalk....and you'll see lots of people that you wouldn't normally suspect, that have to buy their groceries with food stamps, semi-decent looking people who get a check every month just so they can afford those clothes AND the necessities of life.
