"I don't know if they go around and free chickens and cows or what."

That's the first thing that popped into my mind when I read the headline... I was about to go down to the local food mart and set all of the frozen turkeys free.

"We never encourage people to give money to the lobster industry, even if it's for the laudable goal of releasing them," said Bruce Friedrich, PETA's national vice president.

What a pompous tool.

+1, alot of sea creatures are hardy, but they won't take a shock like that. Just like the idiots that dump their new fish stright into the tank, then biatch to us when it dies.

Its their money. If they want to give it away to support the lobster industry, so be it. And what do they mean that they wanted to give them a chance? They had a chance, and they got caught, but whatever.....

... this is why I always hem and haw when people ask me if I'm an "environmentalist."

I am, if not an actual tree-hugger than at least a sustainable growth advocate. But is saying yes really worth spending the next 30 minutes explaining the difference between real environmentalist and Greenpeace/PETA morons?

2007-04-11 02:29:57 PM
The episode unfolded in the midst of a lobster shortage and record prices when a group of young people arrived at New Meadows Lobster Pound declaring that lobsters are "God's creatures" and deserved a shot at freedom, said owner Pete McAleney.

They had their shot at freedom when they were born. They failed!!!!

Everybody wins except the lobsters. The lobster industry makes double on their catch, some ignorant activists get to pat themselves on the back, and I get another shot at eating tasty lobster, grilled and dipped in butter.

/dammit, now I'm hungry
//lobster tonight?

... I was about to go down to the local food mart and set all of the frozen turkeys free.

Set up ten 2-liter bottles of pop, and we'll bowl a couple frames down aisle 6. You can't do that with a live turkey.

One group that claims no credit is People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

As useless as this exercise is, in the end result, it is infinitely more effective than any of the boneheaded stunts PETA tries. Meaning, of course, that this addition to the article is rather pointless since it's rather obvious.

2007-04-11 02:31:00 PM
McAleney gave the group some tips on releasing the lobsters. He suggested that the group drop off the lobsters near the B&M baked bean plant in Portland, where the water is shallow and warmer. "They'll walk to the open ocean," he said.

Hmm Baked Beans, some easy to catch lobsters... only thing that's missing is a picnic table and some potato salad.

go around and free chickens and cows

Only the cute and/or relatively exotic creatures are worthy.

That's why you see hundreds of people up in arms when a kitten (cute) gets squished or some owl (exotic) has its tree cut down but you never hear about cows or pigs (ugly and common) getting any attention.

FTA The release of the lobsters coincided with a shortage caused by bad weather, cold water temperatures and low stocks in lobster pounds.

Another sign of GLOBAL WARMING! We're killing mother earth here people!

Talk about stupidity.

It reminds me of the time Sean Hannity's vegetarian producer was given a lobster-gram...and she set it free in a freshwater lake!!! Dee dee dee!

There's also a big difference between "conservationists" and "environmentalists". I'm definitely a conservationist, but I don't go so far into the environmental movement. I don't want to see natural beauty destroyed, but I recognize the needs of humans, and I know there are good ways to fix the problems.

McAleney gave the group some tips on releasing the lobsters. He suggested that the group drop off the lobsters near the B&M baked bean plant in Portland, where the water is shallow and warmer and where I'll send my employees later tonight to recapture them . It's when we get into the topic of sealife that PETA and PETA-esque folks reveal their absurdity. 'Cause then we get into stuff that "might be a plant"/"might be an animal." I mean, a starfish. Does that get rights?

Lobsters? If you'll wring your hands over the fate of lobsters (and better yet, pull out your wallet to come their rescue), then you have a problem with recreational worrying.

Never have the words "Get," "A" and "Life" been more firmly aligned.

gradatim: Only the cute and/or relatively exotic creatures are worthy.

That is more true for baby seals then lobsters. Buying and freeing animals that have been domesticated for at the very least hundreds of years is not the same as something wild caught (no matter how yummy said sea bug is)
