Ok! Brrrrrrrrr!! I lived in Indiana enough to have had enough being cold, but that's just me!!

Long as you don't tell me it's COLD!!!

Please someone tell me this is made up. My background is primarily west coast, I grew up in Southern California and went to college in New Mexico. Hearing about this school makes me want to vomit. I have never encountered this level of racism in my entire life. A separate white and black prom queen?!? A Prom that white people went to and one that black people went to? shiat like this makes me physically sick.

What the hell is wrong with these people? How does being white or black entitle you to separate functions? As much as people trash talk about California, something like this would never happen in the areas that people talk bad about. (Maybe something like this could happen in rural California, but I doubt it.)

My High school, in Huntington Beach, CA, was barely mostly white about 60% the rest were mostly Asian and Hispanic there was one black guy and one half black girl in my class, and you know what? I never saw any of the students as anything other then my class mates. I am ashamed that stuff like this happens in my country. I mean Come On! Any person in that town, Black, White or whatever, who thinks that separate functions are anything but a horrible, disgusting thing ought to shoot them selves right now to make this world better.

So...does the DJ at this prom play hip-hop or country?

Funny- those are all they played at all of my school dances.

LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD...SHHH
I have lived all over this country and found as a black man that I encountered more racism in small northwestern and northeastern towns than anywhere else. You are either ignorant on the subject or someone in the south rubbed you the wrong way so you just condemn the entire region. Either way, good riddens.

Aside from sounding smart as hell, your login kicks ass :)

2007-04-10 12:33:46 PM
Hmm, I don't think it's so much about race as it is about the type of music played. At my prom, it was nothing but hip-hop and R & B, which meant that a good segment of the students in attendance sat it out or left early.

First of all, you need to read this whole thread :)

Second of all, if you had a larger, more representative black population at your school (20%), you might have had similar issues to these other places.

We moved here to Montgomery, AL in 2001, and when my son went to ask the only black girl in the grade ahead of him to the prom, his peers gave him such a hard time. [He went to St. James for a couple of years] He promptly DROPPED a bunch of his friends (told them they were racist assholes) ... and oddly, he got a lot of respect from a lot of people after that, as he didn't care what those kids (who grew up together) thought of him. He always walked to the beat of his own drum.

As of today, he's been dating for 2 years the same (black) girl he met right after high school. I want to kick his ass because he stood me up for lunch yesterday, but other than that, he's a good kid, and I really like his girlfriend.

Millzners: Just force the south to secede, I'm so tired of it. Cut the anchor that's draggin the whole country and therefore a large part of the world down.

They still have the damn confederate flag flying everywhere, and half of them think the South won the Civil War anyway. It's not like they'd be opposed.

I just moved to the South from San Francisco(!) last year. I love in Athens, GA, and to be honest, it's about 90% as liberal as SF is.

When I first moved here, I amazed/horrified/shocked to see so many confederate flags throughout the South on my drive out from California. What I learned, though, is that the South views the Civil War differently than we do; for most (from my experiences, at least), it isn't about racism, but rather states' rights; people fly the Confederate flag to support the South's heritage and as a sign of independence.

Also, I know it doesn't seem like much, but there's a difference between the Confederate battle flag (square) and the normal Confederate flag (rectangular). From what I've been told, people more often associate the square one with racism.

Like I said, though, I've lived in SF for the last 10 years, and grew up in Souther California, so my first impressions of the South may not be the most accurate. My preconceived notions that I had about the South before moving here, though, were 100% wrong.

It's a lot nicer here than you'd think.

SchlingFo: You're purposefully trying to insult where people live, instead of admitting that both the north and the south have good and bad places.

Oh, but the North has no true dicohtomy of good and bad, like New Orleans. Everything that is great about the French influence in America and everything that is bad about...everything else.

And don't you dare bring up Detroit...because it does not have an up side, so there is no dichotmy there.

A couple of cousins of mine were invited to private proms in Albany, GA. It has absolutely zilch to do with race, but everything to do with elitism. Being invited is a big thing, down there. It's like saying they accept you as one of their own.

Ashburn is really more out in farm country. I've been past it more than a few times; tiny little farm town, nothing much else. Their segregated prom concept seems to be a different thing than just the "private prom" mentioned above. So it's good to see the kids trying to break away from that kind of thing. Hopefully they can get along.

Funny..I make exactly half (in Athens, not ATL), and my rent, for the size house my girlfriend and I have, is...well...incalculable in SF standards...the don't have houses that size with yards like ours there.

I'll always, always love SF though...

well I don't know too much about racism levels around the U.S. but I would think that its just a matter of how scarce blacks are in some towns.

If a town has nearly no blacks, the occassional black person would be more noticeable and racism higher.

But if there are lots of blacks around, less racism is likely since people are just used to having a mix of people around.

I'm up in Canada near Toronto and there are plenty of black people around and black racisim is no where near the issue that it is in the U.S.

Not sure if its because pro black laws encourage resistance towards blacks or what.

Resenting preferential treatment is a normal reaction in all things.

I also think that the media feeds the whole racism thing.

2 examples:

1.that espn sports story implying that MLB is racist against blacks since only 9.2% is black and yet ignore that blacks probably dominate every other sport.

2. Back in 1992, when the Blue Jays went to the world series for the first time, here in Canada we didn't even think about the fact that Cito Gaston was the first black manager to get to the World Series.
And yet, it was a big story south of the border.

Oh yeah, a couple of years back, the Toronto Star ran a cover story implying that the Blue Jays were racist since so few of the players were black.

They got ALOT of shiat for that story for trying to stir up racist issues for no good reason.

The Toronto Sun jumped all over them like white on rice. heh.

Seriously, Liberal media (like the Toronto Star) may think that they are doing blacks a favour by raising these issues, but I think they tend to do more harm than good if they just stir the racism shiat up just for the sake of raising a stink.

twilson2 And you'd be talkin a bunch of shiat that you have no knowledge about.

Well, I try to make it a point to not "be talkin" (sic) about subjects that I know little about. I have lived in 5 very distinct regions of the US, and each of them had their strengths and weaknesses. And, I actually agree with you on many of your points. I have little tolerance for racism anywhere, and unfortunately it is still alive and well here (as the article and this thread suggests).

However, your ancedotal evidence of "tons of people from up north have moved down south and then moved back" is hardly an indictment of the reality of the modern south. Times change, people change, and progress happens. Do I think where I live is the nicest place in the US? Of course not. Do I think it is a great place to live? Of course, or I wouldn't be here.

I'm just thankful there are still regional differences in US (bad or good). It would be a mighty boring country if we were all Peoria.

Oh, I'm sorry I have work to do and can't spend my life on Fark. How about you?

Nothing at all to do with it, Sparky, I just wanted to make sure you responded instead of ignoring it, which is frankly, judging from your response, what you should have done. Opening your mouth and revealing yourself to be an idiot, etc and so forth.

If you really were as adept at reading as you think yourself, you might have noticed I didn't mention anything about black people.

Your comment was regarding black people and was racist. If you intended to refer to whites only, you should have clarified, but I don't believe you meant whites - it's pretty clear it was a blanket statement on corn rows, which is a racist comment. Other people commented about corn rows on whites, not you. Still irrelevant to the bigger issue. Anyone is free to wear their hairstyle in whatever way they like, and if they're a douche, it's not just because of their hair.

I didn't mention race at all in my post. I said cornrows look ridiculous.

Spoken in the tone of absolute-fact, used to infer that your opinion should matter to anything pertaining to the larger issue, which it doesn't. Corn rows looking ridiculous or not, in your opinion or anyone else's, is completely irrelevant. If you want to state an opinion in a non-offensive way, say "I think..." instead of using a declarative tone in your gibberish.

An opinion, if you can't grasp the finer concept of self determination.

I have. It appears you haven't.

I never said my opinion was end-all-be-all, but since you can't farking read and actually fabricate your own little reality, I'm sure that means nothing to you.

I can read, oh yea of simple mind. Responding to your post at all proves I can read. You may not like my response, but it fails to demonstrate that I can't read, as you seem to be clinging to. You don't like my interpretation of your gibberish, but I can clearly read.

Wow I accomplished that without resorting to diatribe or ad hominem.

I am not the slightest bit interested in your invocation of logical fallacies. It is the tactic of an inferior debater, and although many on Fark have a boner for quoting STRAW MAN and AD HOMINEM everwhere they go, it's really tiresome. Say what you have to say and forget about attempting to use your basic and flawed understanding of the language to brow beat me. It's futile.

I could say something along the lines of "someone must have pissed in your mother," but, well, I don't need to. I'm so cool now, I can hurl insults and epithets across the intenet! Yay for me!

I think you missed the point of my "sh*thead" remark... it wasn't an insult, I truly do believe your head is full of sh*t.

Learn to read. You'll make mommy proud.

Aw, another mommy comment. What a precious way to end a heap of rubbish post. Good for you. Let's get off mothers, I just got off yours, etc.

zeppel,

"If a town has nearly no blacks, the occassional black person would be more noticeable and racism higher."

That logic flies in the face of the accusers from the north. You see, the New England posters don't have much diversity at all, whereas blacks are generally in much higher percentages in the south.

Then again, I've seen MUCH more racism in California (directly contradictory to some previous west coast posters) than I do here, even though Cali is probably THE most diverse state in the nation.

So, Maybe it has to do with liberal preconceptions that racism (or fear of the unknown in general) is an abberation of some kind?

The fact is we (humans) fear what is foreign. It manifests itself in many ways but it's true and it's universal.

If a race of centipedes parked a flying saucer in your front lawn and said they had a cure for cancer, Humanity would find a way to fark up the relationship.

They're bugs after all.
