Maybe they'll bring more unique games to the field. I think we're all tired of First- and Third- Person Shooters, Grand Theft Auto clones, and yearly sports feature creep titles.

I love adventure games and some RPGs

2007-04-07 01:09:37 AM
I just hope that more women developers will mean fewer women as helpless victims, and fewer triple-D boobs.

Although they've been doing better about both of these lately. It's almost as though they've realized that *gasp* chicks game too! And not just Barbie games!

/farking GTA IV trailer was beautiful.

Can't wait for "My Little Pony's Shopping Adventure IV"...

Now maybe women in video games won't be portrayed in an unrealistic manner anymore. Unlike the male video game characters who so accurately represent what the average male gamer looks like.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go bench press a Volkswagen and shave my chest.

Producer and researcher Emma Westecott said although women outnumbered men in playing games online...

They apparently didn't account for the men with the female online personas.

how about a second person shooter game? it's an important life skill for those of us livin' in detroit i believe...

I'd get into computer game development, if it wasn't for the creepy leers I got every time I took a class on the subject. Honestly guys, have all the fun you want with porn on your own time, but don't stare at a chick in your class while stroking yourself. It's just weird.

/there is a huge lack of hot male hookers in the GTA series

2007-04-07 04:13:13 AM
Creepy leers or simple confusion? You might just be the first girl they've seen offline for a few weeks.

/Goes to rpi
//25% female

Creepy leers. And that one guy just kept staring while stroking himself through his jeans. Most disturbing thing I've ever seen on a college campus in my life.

I am so glad for online courses now.

Well when you count Yahoo Games and other web games as online games, I don't doubt those numbers a bit.

I doubt they meant anything by it.

except for the guy stroking himself, he was simply a pervert, those aren't limited to game developers.

If I wanted to loose about 30% of my pay and work an extra ten to twenty hours a week for nothing, I'd go back to working in the gaming entertainment industry; but I don't. I now work in non-profit medical research and drug development. I used to work in offices with one or two women working there, and now it's within 20% of being 50/50 male to female.

Maybe the reason that there are not more women in the gaming entertainment industry is because they recognize that the business is mostly a bunch of young (inexperienced) males who want to play games. There are exceptions, but the image is based on fact. They make a rational decision, rather than the emotional one that brings many males to that industry.

It was fun at times working in gaming entertainment, but I left it broke and unemployed at no fault of my own -- other than choosing the wrong career path.

If there were more Animal Crossing and Viva Pinata titles out there, the gaming industry would be much more profitable and friendly to female staffers.

You know what game needs to make a comeback? Aerobiz! You were the CEO of an airline company. It's as exciting as it sounds.

Maybe to jazz it up, you could shoot terrorist hijackers and sleep with stewardess. Or vice-versa, whatever you're into.

2007-04-07 04:46:28 AM
fark Animal Crossing. Faux socializing with crappy Eliza clones was not my favorite pooptime activity. A few good puzzle games would go a long way towards making me a happier gamer.

Funny-as-hell ones with good gameplay work, too. Raving Rabbids is awesome.

/I want Tetrisphere for my Wii, dammit

Also: stop it with the WWII sims and shooters. How many times do you expect me to re-fight the Battle of Normandy without wanting to puke up blood? Why not go for something Punic, or Polynesian, or even French & Indian or Rev War?

Bonus points if you include an easter egg where I can spank Cornwallis with a saber.

Yeah, the Punic wars! You could be one of the elephants Hannibal rides across the Alps. And instead, it would be Hannibal Lector! He could eat all the Romans!

This is why I'm not a game developer.

2007-04-07 04:57:21 AM
Meh.
We had a couple of chicks working for us in game development in Hong Kng.
They couldn't really keep up with the guys.

Chicks just can't hold they smoke. That's what it is.

2007-04-07 05:02:45 AM
Ugh. More of this stupidity.

There aren't enough female programmers at all for there to be a significant number of female programmers involved in gaming. Quite frankly, when you take into account that females with the understanding and capabilities to work in game development are incredibly rare, having a situation where 18% of game developers are women isn't bad at all. It's a far cry from the 1980s.

The situation won't "improve" until there are more solitary geeky/nerdy women. Because it's solitary geeky/nerdy people who make great games.

Crosma Absolutely. I don't know what outsiders' perception of the games development industry is but it's certainly not like some "Willy Wonka's Games Factory". The fact is, games development isn't "sexy". It's generally bloody boring and tends only to attract nerdy types who love the technology and the code (and who would probably do what they do whether they were paid or not).

Unfortunately, Nazis are the only politically safe 'bad guys' in the age of modern weaponry. If you made games about hunting the VC, Al-Qaida or Crushing Saddam there would be endless carping about whitey opression on the brown people or some nonsense like that.

The other alternative is of course being pol pot in cambodia, some random warlord's thug in Darfur, etc, but most people like to play the good guys.

Why not go for something Punic, or Polynesian, or even French & Indian or Rev War?

Bonus points if you include an easter egg where I can spank Cornwallis with a saber.
Not widely known, or before the era of modern weaponry. A FPS with a flintlock musket wouldn't be very exciting as a primary game. It might make a barely playable mod on another FPS game.

If you want wars before modern weaponry you're stuck in RTS land for a good reason.

The ironic thing is, programming is "women's work", as was quoted to me by a guy who used to work for Mitsuubishi, programming software for them. He was told this by his boss, and he found it quite true.

Sitting at a keyboard and typing instructions in, day after day? It certainly doesn't fit the stereotype of a strong masculine career. More like a secretary.

C++ isn't dead but it is reeling. I've been interviewing people the last few weeks and the only decent ones don't even bother with C++ anymore. .Net, C#, Java, etc... is where it's at. Even a woman can program in those languages so it bodes well for female programmers.

What the fark does C++ have to do with anything?
If you've written with one HLL, you've written with them all. It's just a matter of syntax.

Except "Visual Basic", and VBA. You can learn the syntax, and it still won't farkin work, until you shake the medicine stick and burn a prayer.

Here we go again with this "women can't drive" business.

Right. And that's why car insurance is ASTRONOMICALLY HIGHER for men than it is for women. Because women are such a terrible, terrible danger on the road.

Here we go again with this "women can't drive" business.

Right. And that's why car insurance is ASTRONOMICALLY HIGHER for men than it is for women. Because women are such a terrible, terrible danger on the road.

Well, the upshot is that women seem to know they're terrible drivers, so they keep far enough away from others on the road.

I know I'm a shiatty driver (guy), most often from inatentiveness, so I keep far away from the car ahead of me and do some other stuff.

There's plenty of piss-poor male drivers who think they're God's gift to the road and drive accordingly. Hence the insurance rates.

The most incompetent driver I've ever been in the car with was a woman. College girl might be a more accurate description. She never did crash into anyone but she couldn't handle the highway (stopped at the end of onramps & other idiocies), couldn't handle her parents other car (sharply adjusted turning halfway through taking a right, for example), couldn't handle my car (ran it over a couple curbs AFTER driving it 100 miles).

Another college girl that comes to mind can't figure out how to stop within arm's reach of a drive-thru. And runs over curbs frequently in her own car.

I've never ridden with a guy who demonstrated those basic manuvering incompetencies. I have ridden with guys (once each time) who were very reckless and probably will get into an accident.

The basic handling incompetencies I've seen in women will never result in a significant claim, just maybe some small repair bills. They manifested themselves constantly and so you couldn't really ignore them as flukes.

The reckless men I've ridden with push the edge of control and reason in their vehicles with every drive. That they can do it most of the time shows skill. That such displays of skill and recklesses will put them occasionally past their limits and into big accidents displays a lack of judgement.

Most of my male and female friends are fine drivers, truth be told. The idiots in each gender manifest their driving problems in different ways. The bad women drivers lack skill. The bad male drivers lack judgement.

I'm just glad to see more chicks on the bench.

i was thinking about the driving issue on my way to school today and i have come to the truths of all truths...video game skill and driving skill and directly related. Studies have shown surgeons who play video games display better control over their instruments during surgery. likewise, it could be shown that since more males play driving games then females, they have more experience maneuvering through traffic and testing the limits or their vehicles knowing that they will not be harmed or harm anyone in the process. Obviously playing a car game and driving aren't the same, but the same mental processes must exist when deciding how to drive. this makes males more comfortable behind the wheel. the one thing i hate is driving with someone who is obviously afraid to drive. if you think that everyone is out to get you and ram you and destroy you, then stay off the road, driving isnt meant for you. just because you havent got in an accident doesnt mean your a good driver. and if you think about it, accidents remind us that things can go wrong.
