I'd have gone with the silly tag for this one, banning guns from a National Guard tank training range. Or maybe ironic.

Mark Fuller, director of the Rapter Research Center at Boise State University, estimates that dozens of protected birds are shot annually in the park, including in the restricted area.

The birds most people see outside in the United States are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, with four exceptions: House Sparrows (English Sparrows), Starlings, city pigeons (Rock Doves), and Mute Swans. These four are native to Europe. There are more exceptions, but for the most part the birds people see are either one of these four species or they are protected. You can shoot ducks in season because the law offers less protection to game birds; they are still covered and shooting outside of the authorized limits of hunting and property defense is still a federal crime.

As for the "dozens" estimate, I'm not impressed. A man is on trial in Massachusetts for shooting hundreds of herons, ospreys, and some other birds including a Bald Eagle who were preying on the fish in his hatchery.

" limit shootings at Idaho Army National Guard troops who report slugs bouncing off their tanks on a regular basis."

Well, at least they're getting a little taste of what to expect in Iraq. I'm pretty sure some of the white supremacist militias there have RPGs and IEDs and would be happy to give the National Guard troops the total Iraq experience. In turn, the militias would get experience in fighting against a better armed, better trained and superior force. It's a win/win situation.

/or not?

"Uhh, sarge, do I shoot back?"

"Not here, not yet"
2007-04-05 11:11:25 AM
They want their Tots.
2007-04-05 11:11:25 AM
Wait..... people actually live in Idaho?

Sucks to be them
2007-04-05 11:12:02 AM
and the sound of shooting anything that moves: "KLBJAM!"
2007-04-05 11:13:09 AM
That would be very weird.

You're rolling along in an APV or something, on a leisurely Nat'l Guard weekend--ping!
"What the hell was that sarge?"
"Private, we are in Idaho are we not?"
"Sir, Yes Sir"
"It's started!"
Sarge climbs on the .50, starts hosing trees, screaming "Take that you communists!!!"

im part of the idaho shooting population so im getting a kick out of these replies...
2007-04-05 11:13:38 AM
Just take a few potshots back. Sportsmen won't be so interested in taking potshots after a few tank shells have gone their way.
2007-04-05 11:13:53 AM
hail the rednecks of the great north west!

all us southern yokels have to shoot up are stop signs and junk cars.

No blood no foul

Move along, nothing to see here

Yeah, those poor bastards in Idaho. [cough]

I see a very straightforward solution here.
2007-04-05 11:20:17 AM

anybody remember how shooting at locals worked out for these guys?
2007-04-05 11:20:48 AM
I see a demand for this product, they should set up some tanks and charge people $30 to shoot at them while the drivers tool around training. Use the money to buy some bulletproof vests for Iraq. Win/win.
2007-04-05 11:21:03 AM
Let the guardsmen shoot back. Might hurt the hunter's banjos, though.
2007-04-05 11:23:06 AM
I love the No Shooting sign riddled with bullet holes.
2007-04-05 11:23:12 AM
It's coming right for us!

Seriously, if the weekend warriors waxed a few of these morans, I wouldn't complain.

Doesnt surprise me, Boeing has problems with people shooting at their 737 fuselage segments that are shipped via rail from Kansas to their Washington state factories for assembly. They have to go patch up the fuselage barrels once they arrive, before assembly.

"There's a segment of the shooting community that will shoot at anything that moves," said John Sullivan, the area's manager.

Yep, usually idiot redneck hunters. They're the first to tell you that no one needs anything more than a bolt action rifle, and they do stuff like this.

/I hunt
//But I cannot stomach the 3/4 of hunters who appear to be semi-functionally retarded.
///Too stringy.

Have you ever been there? It has to be one of the most beautiful states in the Union. Not too hot in the summer, and believe it or not, not too cold in the winter. Mountains, streams, lakes, forests, you name it - if you like outdoor stuff like cross-country biking, fishing, &c., Idaho is tough to beat. Very few drunk rednecks also.

While I'm here... someone commented in some other thread a few days ago, that "there's nothing to do in about 45 of the states". Damn straight - outside the "four corners" states and Idaho, there ain't a lot going on.

Here's my bet. The shooters are city people. They have no idea what they're doing or what they're shooting at. Where I live we are scared to death of these morons who drive out of the city, shoot at things, and call it hunting.
If you paint C-O-W with day-glo orange paint on the sides of your herd and they still shoot them . . .
2007-04-05 11:30:16 AM
wow. what kind of a braindead animal do you have to be to shoot at military training excercises in your own country.

I bet half the guys who do this drive home in a pickup truck with a yellow ribbon sticker on it. and I bet they voted for Bush.
2007-04-05 11:32:45 AM

You are right, this area south of Boise used to be a great place to go enjoy yourself. However, the influx of city folk from other states shiat themselves when they find out they can be in remote locations within a half an hour and behave like morans.

Hmm... Identify them, arrest them, confiscate their guns, and send them to prison for a very long time?

Idaho may have that but nothing compares to the sun glistening off of the superfund sights near my house.

/actually hate living in this state

I had much the same idea several years ago, when I suggested to my friend that he fix up the dozens of close-to-junked cars on his property enough so they were mobile, bulldoze a road through the woods, build a couple wooden shacks for bars, and charge people $25 for a few hours in the "Drunk Driving Theme Park".

Ain't that the truth? I go out and shoot on public lands, but I do so in a safe and responsible manner and pick up my brass and targets afterwards, as well as pick up other crap left there by previous shooters.

Maybe these knuckleheads are saying "Tanks are bulletproof, they won't mind if we use them as moving targets."

Still, the considered response is foolish: People shooting in a prohibited area? Let's expand the prohibited area! That's like saying "Gee, the speed limit here's 25mph, but some knuckleheads were driving 50mph here! Clearly, we must lower the limit to 15mph to take care of it!"

The shooters should be found and charged with willful damage to government property, shooting in a restricted area, and endangerment (what happens if a tanker pops his head out of a hatch and catches a bullet?).

Actually guys, I imagine this is mostly city people from California. Like they said, Idaho is the third fastest growing state in America, and I bet if you checked the demographics of Boise, only 30% are actually from Idaho, 60% California and the rest from other areas.

They come up here and think that Idaho is some untamed wild wild west amusement park. Most of the native Idaho "rednecks" have grown up around guns, taken hunters ed, and gained an appreciation for them. To the Californians flocking here the wide open spaces and chance to play "redneck" for a day is just a novelty.

Shooting at the National Guard Soldiers is stupid.

Did you ever try to CLEAN one of thos S.O.B.s?
2007-04-05 11:55:22 AM
Let the tankers return fire. I'm sure these asshats would need clean shorts if, after they fire on a tank, the turret swings around and starts to track them. Let loose w/ a .50 cal. over their heads and see if they still feel like shooting at a tank w/ a .22.
2007-04-05 11:58:30 AM
Nice armored division you have here Colonel, shame if something was to "happen" to it...

I mean, accidents happen...

What exactly is wrong with them taking potshots at the tanks? That's funny, sort of adds to the training experience, and I noticed that no one seems to be too bothered about that in particular anyways..
2007-04-05 12:10:21 PM
I've trained up there at Gowen Field. Good times.

I live in Boise and this is the first time I've heard of this. I call bullshiat media sensationalism on this story.
