nick4753: And if you want to do this, get a freaking generator...

With the price of gas the way it is, I don't think it would be as cost effective as outright theft of electricity. What they should have done is run miles of cable (again, not exactly cheap either) and do a number of splices down the cable into some kind of innocent looking house. That house will then have an underground cable running into your pot cave. If the electric company gets wise, they come knocking on an innocent house and (worst case) cut off electricity.

Now, if your pot cave is in a particularly windy or sunny part of the country, perhaps wind or solar generated power is the way to go.

Those pics are almost as cool as this picture my cousin showed me, of a guy standing on to of the world trade center just seconds before the plane hit.

Didn't this happen over a year ago?

Authorities said marijuana grown indoors can sell for $4,000 to $5,000 a pound, versus $300 a pound for the outdoor variety.

Depending on a grower's harvesting methods, 454 plants could produce tens of thousands of dollars in profits every few weeks. For example, DEA agents said 62 of the plants seized last week were ready for harvest. They could yield 7 to 14 pounds at the next harvest, or $30,000 to $60,000, with another batch ready for harvest a few weeks later.

Well shiat. I just got layed off. Maybe I should go this route. Easy money here I come!

Does anyone but me have a problem with the fact that your electricity usage is watched, and if there's anything anomalous you're red-flagged and investigated for crimes?

I don't even do drugs (anymore) and I'm even one of those "and neither should you" types, so I'm not defending people who grow pot or anything but... it just seems wrong. Too "big brother police state" style for my tastes.

2007-04-04 12:12:35 PM
They probably got caught because they were splicing into the power lines. It would only have been a matter of time.

If you could run an underground operation like that off the grid you may never get nailed.

Glad to know my tax dollars are being wasted. Legalize it!

2007-04-04 12:27:00 PM
All of this is made possible by the "war on drugs" which makes it lucrative to build million dollar systems to evade detection.

Legalization of marijuana would stop this.

(but it would probably just be replaced by multi-million dollar meth labs or something).

{rant} Dang it! This story has made the Fark frontpage many many times. I have been submitting links for a year and nothing, not one green. I understand there's a shiatload of links the mods go through and my headlines may be lame, but hell, this is the same pot cave story over and over. Maybe I should wait a month and go w/ this story. {/rant}

The people behind this got caught for stealing their electricity. Often, in a serious farm such as this, people will find a way to steal power so their massive usage wont be noticed by the power companies. This is how many of these farms get busted.

from the article someone else linked to "guilty to charges of conspiracy to manufacture marijuana plants and manufacturing marijuana plants. A conviction could result in prison terms of between five and 40 years."

Manufacturing marijuana plants? Do they manufacture spinach and corn and peas? I have always heard of plants as being cultivated, or grown, or raised.

Ah, the archaic and draconian US drug laws. Say goodbye to the last of the family farms, say goodbye to America as a localized agrarian society.

Here is the breakdown of Schedule I drugs from Federal Law. These drugs hold the strictest penalty of law. From Wikipedia.

"Schedule I drugs

(A) The drug or other substance has a high potential for abuse.
(B) The drug or other substance has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States.
(C) There is a lack of accepted safety for use of the drug or other substance under medical supervision.

No prescriptions may be written for Schedule I substances, and such substances are subject to production quotas by the DEA."

Cannibas is a schedule I drug. So is Heroin, Cocaine, and MDMA. Methamphetemines are Schedule II drugs (less detrimental in the law's eyes) and include Crystal Meth and Ice.

In our antiquated federal drug laws, Marijuana is seen as more dangerous than Crystal Meth.

These folks got busted because someone rolled over. It was stated in the original article.

They were tapped directly in to the power grid illegally. The Guy the owner they busted in Florida was 1 of 3 people who were arrested. They were smart and were caught the old fashioned way. Someone talked.

The original article stated that the owner sold the property to himself many times under false names etc. Just the other day in NYC they busted a large garden. They had to call in specialist from Con-Ed to dismantle the power setup because it was so sophisticated

According those rules, alcohol ought to be a schedule I drug.

I've never seen this article before - I'm not an obsessive internet nerd who lives on fark. Cool article to a casual observer. Everyone's saying these people would get busted for eating up the juice - do you think the power company wants you to use less electricity? People get busted for bypassing the electricity. If you just used the energy legitimatel and made up some lame excuse to the power company guy on the phone like "I run a computer business from my home" they'd never bust you. Of course, this would make the weed more expensive, but not by enough to make a significant dent in the profits. It's always some jackass selling these people out - or worse, one of the guys girlfriends.

This story is worth repeating every year or so. In fact, it would make a fair fark cliche.

Tennessee Bud Cave Rules, dude

Hmmmm, that looks to be a very profitable industry. So explain to me again why pot is illegal while I can suck down all the Jack Daniels and smoke as many cigars as I darn well want?

Legalize that shiat and tax it. It looks like we could save social security off weed taxes alone.

What if we met the government halfway? Say legal to grow in the USA for American use, but no importation or anything?
