Jack Nicholson was an awful Joker. Burton is more to blame for that than Nicholson, but it's an awful performance nonetheless.

I agree that Jack Nicholson's Joker did suck. A pity that he got paid more than anyone ever got paid for anything for his performance.

The Joker should be scarier than Hannibal Lecter and Courtney Love combined.

I thought Jack Nicholson's Joker was perfect for Tim Burton's Batman, just as Mark Hamill was for animated Batman. But either of them would be wrong for Christopher Nolan's Batman. Heath Ledger is not my first choice (that would be Crispin Glover), but I'm trying to be open minded about it. My first impression is that he's too young. But Nolan says that was his reason for casting him. This is supposed the origin of Batman vs Joker, so it's like a "this is how they got started" approach.

Mark Hamil would have been a great choice. Not only did he do the Joker's voice, he also played an obvious ripoff in the old "The Flash" TV show (the Trickster).
