"When officers arrived, Burns allegedly lunged at one of them, pushing him to the ground with both hands, and took a fighting stance, Cessina said."

I call bullshiat.

"During the scuffle, the officers did not notice Burns' Medic Alert bracelet."

I'm beginning to see a lot of these "cops think diabetic guy is a combative, non-compliant drunk, so cops do X to guy." Should diabetics maybe wear a medic-alert bracelet to warn cops about this or something? Just seems like a bad situation.

2007-04-03 09:59:23 AM
D'oh, I get an F for reading comprehension. That is all.

I think a lot of cops need more training.

Something tells me their ego got in the way this time. Hmm, muscular male, seemingly intoxicated, bet I can take him down.

2007-04-03 10:03:06 AM
Let's just make things easier and make diabetic shock illegal.

2007-04-03 10:03:07 AM
Insulin shock may arse...I say taser shock!

He wasn't shot? Lucky guy.

This is from the cnn.com article:

Burns, a board member of the American Diabetes Association who often speaks to raise awareness about the condition, said he doesn't remember the incident clearly.

"I could understand if I was belligerent or had track marks, but I was nicely dressed and I don't think I fit the profile or smelled like alcohol," Burns told the San Mateo Daily Journal.

/he sounds like sort of a moron...

2007-04-03 10:06:20 AM
gotta love how they still charge him with assault and resisting arrest.

2007-04-03 10:06:35 AM
For those not in the know... Diabetic reactions are non-compliant, and drunk looking. About 1/2 will try and fight any sort of help or resistance. It's sad yes... but still dangerous. I have personally seen 2 very bad accidents and a couple fights. not too sure what would help this.

/if it acts, walks, and talks like a duck.....
//...but is not, blame flame war on fark

Nice plug for this story on IRIE, Drew.

My cousin almost killed someone while having diabetic "episode"...he had no idea what he was doing nor does he remember it. What's worse is he's one of the nicest people you've ever met and when he found out what he had done, it really devastated him.

"During the scuffle, the officers did not notice Burns' Medic Alert bracelet."

You think they had the chance to stop and read it?

2007-04-03 10:08:20 AM
At least they didn't kill him with a sword.

2007-04-03 10:08:46 AM
Burns says he was trying a new diabetes drug, when he felt dizziness and poor vision.

The cops just wanted to see if their mace would help it out.

2007-04-03 10:09:48 AM
It's one thing to subdue someone who is combative. I can understand that much. Whether this guy actually did become combative before he was maced and wrestled to the ground is another story entirely. Furthermore, the officers should have known better than to ask an "intoxicated" or otherwise incoherent person to sign a citation. It will never stand in court. Furthermore, a simple blood test would have revealed this gentleman wasn't drunk, but rather experiencing a serious medical condition.

/I like to see obnoxious drunks get their asses kicked.
//But who gets drunk in a movie theater?
///Alcoholics FTW

2007-04-03 10:11:40 AM
I don't see anything in the article about him wearing a bracelet....where did you guys see that?

2007-04-03 10:12:00 AM
There has to be a way of avoiding these "insulin shocks." If there is, the patient must be mandated to use them, and must not take the risk to be outside while he is trying out a "new medication." Still, reading the article it seems as if no one (except the Mr. Universe guy) got hurt, and the action seems headed for a dismissal anyway, so they should just drop the charges and move on.

2007-04-03 10:12:20 AM
Clearly just a part of the puppet theater.

That movie/tv show needs a sequel and/or new series pronto!

2007-04-03 10:14:10 AM
Cops just need insulin/sugar tranq guns. That way they still get their small-dick rush of being able to light up some poor seemingly intoxicated non-compliant sob, but the darts will eventually bring their blood sugar around to normal levels, and they can send them on their way once they're coherent.

I remember watching some ad for an awful original movie on SciFi the other day thinking, "Christ...take the money you'd have spent for that, and make Fox an offer for the TV rights..."

2007-04-03 10:16:56 AM
ExcaliburPrime111 has a great idea. I say we just lock all them "Diabetics" up. You never know when one might go "insulin crazy" (I prefer this term to "Insulin shock"). We all know they're faking it anyway. Bunch of dangerous criminals!

/You're retarded, sir.

The cops always bring him the very best violence?

Then he cried. Like a baby. A hungry, angry baby.

This happened to a diabetic friend of mine (who just happens to be a boxer). If his blood sugar dropped he would get "playful" and want to spar, etc. Cops thought he was drunk, took four of them to bring him down. Woke up in the hospital cuffed with plenty of bruises. One of the cops had seen the medic alert bracelet and actually had the sense to call an ambulance.

I can't believe Mr Universe is 43. I guess it is possible being he lives in California where you can get a facelift at the drive-thru.

+1*n, Smitty for the Serenity reference. Well played.

Used to live in Redwood City. More cops per square inch than anyplace I've ever seen. Stunningly low average IQ though. Drool all over the place.

Hmmmmmm.........top level pro body builder, and a diabetic. Now, I am not accusing anyone of anything, but you know that insulin is a top body building drug, right? Even better than anabolic steroids in ways.

Sure, you can die if you fark it up, but that never stopped anyone before.

"My cousin almost killed someone while having diabetic "episode"...he had no idea what he was doing nor does he remember it."

I hear that, but when I see police use the words "took a fighting stance" alarm bells go off. Too often, that's total horse shiat.

"You think they had the chance to stop and read it?"

I think it's part of their job to look for and recognize such things.

Fox execs are idiots. What could possibly have possessed them to cancel Firefly?

Sounds like there are quite a few Browncoats in here.
