Unexploded bomb = massive amounts of forensic evidence.

They are going to catch this idiot and I doubt the judge will have much sympathy during sentencing.

Everyone knows you pan-fry bacon; you don't want it to be directly flame-seared.

... a crime that has shocked and puzzled police and federal agents.

Are Santa Cruz police and federal agents extra-naive and extra-dumb?

Police are trained to assume people are out to kill them. Therefore, they act in a way that makes people want to kill them, and the circle of justice is complete.

Kronicfeld,

there's a bar here in chicago that serves deep fried bacon crumbles. All you can eat with your beer.

Does the bar have extra-wide doors and reinforced stools? Maybe a doctor on stand-by?

Don't know, I've never been there, but people speak of it in mystical tones.

I like how they try to say that the crime is worse because it happened at the officers HOME. Fark that. He had a marked police car in front of his house. It is also amusing that they plan to ask cops if they may have arrested anyone that would hold a grudge... W T F ... damn near everyone that is arrested holds a grudge.

This happened not too long ago in Quebec, only the bomb went off. Not a very good bomb (from the bomber's perspective), though... totaled the police van but didn't kill the officer.

You, my friend, have obviously never spent much time in Santa Cruz. I don't think there even is a Dunkin' Donuts within city limits (at least there wasn't when I was there). Now if somebody blew up Perg's, that would be sad.

"It's one thing if it happens on a street or out in a public area. It crosses a completely different threshold and a completely different line."

So, does that mean it'd have been OK if they tried to blow up a car on the street?

I was going to say what you said. I'd never even heard of Dunkin' Donuts until after I moved out of Santa Cruz (the first time. I went back).

They'd have better luck planting one on one of the many, many, MANY pot dealers on High Street (or, as things are now, a nearby jaywalker?)

Since the article doesn't include a picture of the 'bomb', I'll chip in with some info (The Sentinel, the local paper, had pics). The bomb looked like a milk jug or other sort of plastic container, filled with something flammable, with a fuse on it. The bomb was put under the car, then lit, and I guess the fuse didn't quite burn down all the way.

Rann Xerox there was a myth busters about the chain around the axel trick and it ended up being a bust. The chain just broke as I remember. Anyone else see that episode? I don't recall what happened too well.

blueswoman: that's shocking. in santa cruz?

There's a certain level of mania there, as one finds in say Arcata. Wayward kids, drunken burnouts, tweakers and such all help keep things interesting and sometimes dangerous.

2007-04-01 12:51:31 PM
further - Eureka...maybe; but the kids in Arcata
are too busy protesting the presence of taco bells and
chaining themselves to lumps of wood in public officials'
offices to do something like blow up cars.

Whoa. I work in Santa Cruz, and lately the cops have been cracking down on aggressive and out-of-control transients downtown. There have been a lot of arrests and citations in the past month. I'm not too surprised that someone would decide to retaliate against a specific officer. A lot of these dudes are mentally ill.

I always liked the guy at the Metro Station (or whatever it's called, the central bus stop downtown) who was asking for change so he could get home to San Jose. Invariably, a month later, he'd still be there, trying to get home to San Jose. Poor guy.

Beautiful area though. Good place to live for a while, just not too long.
