Maybe I was dense for explaning it poorly. The pager beeps AND THEN HE MUST LISTEN TO A DISPATCHER GIVE A LOCATION. What is it supposed to do, vibrate in Morse Code?

can't legislate common decency... just because something is rude doesn't mean there should be a law banning it... what about Enormously Fat people at public beaches wearing next to nothing? can't ban that.... it sucks, but why get all upset over it...

2002-08-14 01:42:05 PM
Then, Sparks, if you put it on vibrate and leave the room to take the call, you're not the kind of person that this bill is aimed at. End story.

2002-08-14 01:43:57 PM
Millay: I didn't know that, now everything I believe in has been undermined....hmm...morse code? *shrugs*

Stuff that is ok is fine and stuff that isnt aint.

So what you're trying to say is that stuff that isn't ok isn't fine and stuff that is is, right? Or is it stuff that ain't stuff is things, and stuff that is stuff is stuff?

Sorry mods. Remarkable how angry lots of us get about this subject.

Too many ruined movies, I think.

Someone needs to start a jet ski thread so I can really vent.

I'm with you too! Damn water rats.

Zchamu - You are correct. Thank you.

Everyone needs to realize, no one will go through life without being annoyed. We can't pass laws against everything or things YOU HAVE TO DO may be legislated against.

2002-08-14 01:44:51 PM
Do like in the old drive-in days and give everyone their own pair of speakers in a theater. It kills the "surround" effect but at least you can hear the movie.

Why'd you have to be such a arrogant jerk when you Boobiesed?

Then I say my friend is golden then. So are doctors on call who put it on vibrate and leave immediately. Everyone else should turn their phones off. Making a law about it only pleases nanny state lovers and lawyers on the back of the phone book.

Wow, first time I got censored by the mods, and probably not the last...

2002-08-14 01:47:37 PM
I was at the movies in NYC seeing Cast Away a while back. As you may know, there is about an hour of nearly complete silence in that film.

Some ghetto Queens motherfarker didn't just pick up his ringing phone... He whipped it out and MADE a call from the theater.

If I had any balls I would have said something.

2002-08-14 01:47:41 PM
For god's sake Sparks I don't think there is a person here that would say that doctors or any other emergency responders should have there cell phones taken away. What we are talking about here are the inconsiderate boneheads who feel the need to have conversations about what they had for breakfast or the pants they saw at the gap earlier while they are in a theater. I don't pay $10 a movie to hear the gory details of your sex life or the gossip in your little clique ot friends, I am there to watch the movie. And in your little scenario, if the person you g/f was trying to reach just put their phjone on vibrate and left the room to answer it there would be no farking problem. If you are so self important that you can't understand that then you should have your cell phone stuffed up your ass!

My bad for lack of clarity. I hope my legal writing is better.

2002-08-14 01:48:30 PM
Millay: your friend should get one that vibrates and since he'll need to leave anyway the moment it does just leave the place that expects quiet.

Anyone who is rude enough jabber away on a phone during a movie, concert, etc deserves what they get.

I'm listing to a bootleg of a tool concert right now. It's one of my favourite songs...and in the background I can here really loud talking, some chick picked up her phone and started talking about the concert and how rad(yes she used that word) it is and then went on to talk about her boyfriend and their problems.

I mean sure it's not like she knew someone was recording (illegally even) but if it's loud enough to get picked up over the music...then she had to have been bugging some people who paid alot of money for the show (I emphasize ALOT - it was a very small venue and tickets were outrageously priced)

"Maybe I was dense for explaning it poorly. The pager beeps AND THEN HE MUST LISTEN TO A DISPATCHER GIVE A LOCATION. What is it supposed to do, vibrate in Morse Code?"

Millay: I would suggest that the system be changed to utilize a pager capable of receiving text messages.

2002-08-14 01:49:57 PM
Why'd you have to be such a arrogant jerk when you Boobiesed?

That made me laugh too, and I wrote it. Isn't it time fark gave that f.irst.post filter a rest anyway? Does anyone really do that anymore?

2002-08-14 01:51:37 PM
Cheekymonkey: Change the system to text paging???? You pay for it then! I don't want to pay higher taxes because of someones feelings.

2002-08-14 01:52:04 PM
CheekyMonkey:

Yeah, you'd think they'd do that. But they don't. Maybe typing is too slow or error prone.

2002-08-14 01:52:14 PM
Sparks I'm sorry but I cannot think of any job that would have a valid reason for you to be on call 24/7/365. What if you got hit by a car? Who would they call then? It sounds like your respective businesses need to have a backup.

2002-08-14 01:52:46 PM
I think it's interesting that so many of you assumed the doctor is a man. Sparks even said, "...my girlfriend..."

Luckily, my friend's department owns the lease on the county fairgrounds. They're pretty flush with cash for a volunteer department.

Hell no! It's great fun! More filters!

Firemen, et al, have been using those kinds of systems for years and there was never a public outcry like this. The point: emergency personnel should not be in theaters when on call and, as far as i can tell, they have followed that guideline for some time. This is a different discussion about a different topic, one that has become a problem.

2002-08-14 01:57:23 PM
Millay

Totally different situation - thats a bona fide emergency call. Big difference between that, and casually chatting on a celphone during a movie

2002-08-14 01:57:42 PM
I need my cell phone, but if I go into a public building for ANY reason, I just switch it to vibrate mode.

This isn't rocket science. This is plain old do-unto-others common sense. What a damn shame it had to come down to passing this law, and that law, and getting all sorts of bureaucrats involved in it. And having to pass laws against yakking and driving, which could have saved AbbyNormal some grief. Where I live "driving while distracted" costs you a flat $50. That includes ass hat people who drive around with a dog in their lap.

Of course, when we all have little tiny communicators inserted into one of our sinus cavities a few decades from now, these will all become humorous "blue laws".

ISeeYourDisease: A agree. Tell my boss that!!!
Logweasel: I thought that was funny too. Not only is she a woman, but a minority (Mexican.)

And, yes, we always turn our ringers off.
And no, hers does NOT play La Cucaracha.

no one in here has even touched on the worst of the worst.

NEXTELS!!!

2002-08-14 02:00:23 PM
TeabagTom: Yes, those are annoying. Speakerphones. Ugh. But I wouldn't go so far as to outlaw them.

2002-08-14 02:02:43 PM
Sparks:

Does it play "Lowrider" instead?

Sorry, couldn't help it. She can remove my appendix any time.

2002-08-14 02:03:47 PM
Other annoying things that should be banned:
Loud children in nice restaurants
Screaming rug rats on jets
Rush Limbaugh

2002-08-14 02:08:27 PM
Look, this is simple. It is all about common decency. If most people were, this wouldn't be an issue. If the theaters themselves policed disturbances effectively, it wouldn't be an issue.

But you have an issue where one assjack can ruin an expensive evening out for everyone else. And they aren't going to stop their behavior unless someone slaps them across the head.

Littering shouldn't be a crime, either, but it is because people will do it if there isn't a negative impetus to not do it.

And emegency personnel that have unsilenceable notification equipment shouldn't go to public places where silence is required while on call. It is _common decency_.

I don't think there's that many "cellphone jackasses" on Fark, I actually think a lot of us know how to use them PROPERLY and have countless experiences with others who don't.

I really don't care if I paid $16 for a movie or if I snuck in for free...I don't appreciate having the movie that I'm watching interrupted by a farking cellphone.

I also don't appreciate getting chewed out by my boss when I don't answer his call telling me that the network went down and needs to be back up ASAP.

I'm not sure that I quite understand everyone's biatching...there's little features available called VIBERATE, VOICE MAIL, CALL DISPLAY and countless other things you can use.

Oh, hey, my cellphone started viberating...haul it out and look at the screen...if I don't want to talk (or can't talk), then my voicemail picks up...If I need to talk, then I leave the area.

If you can't figure out basic manners, then you should have your cellphone stuffed up your ass sideways with one of those annoying ring tones.

C'mon, seriously, what did we do before every second person had a god damn phone? We did nothing. We went to the movies and watched it...and hopefully enjoyed it uninterrupted. (Expect with the brats tossing popcorn every now and then).

We have lived with cellphones before...Why must a select few people cause grief for everyone else? They shouldn't.

Those cellphone signal jamming devices are great. I support their use 100%.

As for me, I now just AIM for people running red lights on cellphones and driving nice vehicles...I figure I can get a nice chunk of change.

2002-08-14 02:09:34 PM
I need my cell phone at performances, how else am I going to get msgs from my bully?

2002-08-14 02:11:57 PM
But if everyone was well-behaved and considerate of everyone else, what would we have to talk about here? So I say bring on the SUV's with movie screens instead of windshields! Make cell phones that ring when they sense a quiet environment! Make them all play a Safety Dance ring tone in full before they can be answered! Let Hilary Rosen keep opening her mouth!

Well. Maybe not.

2002-08-14 02:13:24 PM
Sparks:

Most people agree that you should be able to go wherever you want while you're on call, assuming that you keep your cell phone on vibrate, and take your calls in an appropriate manner. It's no big deal for you to leave the theater/performance/dinner whatever to talk, because you will be leaving anyway after the call.

They thing that annoyed most people, including me, about your original post (now deleted) was that it had the tone of "Me and my girlfriend are more important than you, so we can use our phones wherever we want." Using that type of argument did nothing but start a flame war.

2002-08-14 02:14:17 PM
That is definately a good idea. Does graduation count as a performance? This kid that was sitting right next to me during our graduation had his cel phone go off. "Hey. I'm at graduation. Blah, blah, blah..." and then he called whoever it was back later.

Well, that wasn't even close to the worst thing that happened at graduation, but my point's the same.

I think this filter line is the best one on this thread:

Oh, and for the morons who can't figure it out from the text of my Boobies...

viva la filters!

2002-08-14 02:17:31 PM
Hurray! Though I've seen these freaks heckled by the performers during a show and that is a pretty good lesson. 50 bucks is better. A swift asskicking is better still.

2002-08-14 02:19:03 PM
It was a matter of time before someone mentioned "Hilary Rosen" in this thread. Should Godwin's law be amended?

2002-08-14 02:19:32 PM
What did doctors do in the 1960's? Idiots! There was no "on call". It's called, several doctors. I guess someone has to be "on call" because we have proved for years that we dont need to.

2002-08-14 02:21:30 PM
personally, I'm afraid of the consequences if sparks or his/her/wife/girlfriend/husband/whatever aren't immediately available

I did, however, find the link to cell phone jamming equipment quite entertaining

2002-08-14 02:24:43 PM
As much as I hate cellphones, passing a law is not the best way to handle this. Talking in a cellphone in a public place is annoying, but it isn't acually harmful to anyone. A better way to handle this is through restraunts and theaters enacting bans on cellphones.

2002-08-14 02:28:14 PM
Superoogie: I agree with you. In fact I think a lot of the hot button topics on Fark boil down to common decency and consideration of others. Whether it's problems with people on the highway, in theaters, restaurants, etc., it's often about a lack of common decency (whether real or perceived). It'd be nice if people in general could be a little more considerate, but I guess the world needs a$$hats to make the truly considerate and decent people look even better.

2002-08-14 02:31:49 PM
Oh, and for the morons who can't figure it out from the text of my Boobies

Heheheheheheh.

2002-08-14 02:37:19 PM
Dattaway: That was the roundabout reason for that post. Amending Godwin's Law and applying it here might be dangerous.

You guys are paying way too much for movies. I pay $6.75 for the first showing of any movie and I'm not a senior citizen or a student. If I'm going to pay $16 I want my own theater with a sofa and a big margarita.

Right! If they raise the price by 50 cents for the weekend shows I'll just drive to another state! Why didn't I think of that earlier?

2002-08-14 03:12:27 PM
Sparks-as said before, you and your girlfriend are most likely exceptions to the rule. You have the decency to leave the room to complete the call, etc.
And your girlfriend being a doctor reminds me of the old riddle: A father and son are driving, are involved in a terrible accident, and the father dies at the scene. The son is rushed into surgery. The surgeon takes one look at the boy and says, "I can't operate on this boy, he is my son." How can that be? The surgeon is the boy's MOTHER.

Talldarknstinky:

Some of us live in these places called cities where lots of people live and movies haven't been under seven bucks in five years.
