I still can't believe China is making us pay $1M for something that is their damn fault! We may be stupid and obnoxious, but I don't think that America is going to let and other countries pull a fast one on us.

Well....If we paid, we would just get another bill a half hour later.

Captured American pilots, "We would have given them a tip but the Chinese food sucked."

BorkingChikapa- I'm going to play the devil's advocate here.
<devil's advocation>Do you really know that the whole collision was their fault? Couldn't our government be pulling the wool over our eyes? Maybe the plane was in Chinese airspace. Maybe our plane did fly erratically and hit Wang Wei's plane and send him into the sea.
If you're saying that it was their fault that it was kept there for so long, that's a different story, I guess they could have given it back sooner, but they also could have kept it forever or scrapped it or burnt it or dumped it into the ocean or sold it to Iraq.
I also really don't imagine this is a case of China trying to pull a fast one on us. $1M sounds like a lot to me, and I imagine it does to you, as well, but to the U.S. Military and/or government- that ain't nuttin', honey.
</devil's advocation>
That said, I agree with BorkingChikapa. International politics should be, in my opinion, nothing but the highest of courtesy. Something bad happened and a plane had to be landed on Hainan Island, or our brave women and men of the Navy might have had to risk a watery death. A gracious China allows us an emergency landing on their soil. We are very, very grateful (even though it's standard aviation protocol to allow such a landing) to China and tell them so. They, in turn, say "Oh, it was nothing. It's protocol, you know. We didn't do anything you wouldn't have done for us, we're sure. So, let's talk about getting this plane out of here..." They talk logistics, decided to disassemble the plane and send it back to Dobbins AFB. A U.S. Crew goes over to do it. It's done in a week. End of story. Happy China, Happy U.S.

There sure are better ways to handle this. Usually they wait about six months for the payoff and call it "economic aid" or hide it in some other budget item.

Am I the only one who has actually *read* this article? What it says is that the US won't be paying a million to China because nobody's really sure where that figure came from. They will be paying the Chinese for costs associated with the collision and storage of the plane.

Then we should bill those little bastards the cost of our airplane, and the services of the crew that was lost to the Navy during the time.
2001-07-08 12:58:35 PM
We should sue China for emotional distress caused by their fighter pilots upon our spy plane pilots.

HeavyPettingZoo - that sounds nice. Then the US sends all their military secrets to China, nicely gift-wrapped. China returns the favour. Dubya and Jiang are seen holding hands. They proclaim that the military budgets of both countries would be going toward a pan-lingual version of "Teletubbies", and retire to bed. The subsequent session is webcast, and results in all fundies world-wide either repenting and being reformed, or dying of shock. Lions turn vegetarian. Eden is restored. The world ends.
Which pisses me off because it foils my chances of becoming World Hotdog Eating Champion.

Don't you see? If we pay the $1,000,000 to China we will not have the funds to keep up our military strong enough to protect Isreal, allowing the dark lord to bring about the apocolypse.

It's very simple: Chinese communism is simply a daughter of the Vatican. Does nobody read Chick?

it's hard for me to rally round the flag when things like this occur. you never really know what happened and if what our govt. is saying is really true or not. they only release the true story after everyone involved has died of old age. here's a tainted link to a story that has always sounded fishy to me. 0
