just a little FYI, human red blood cells (ie what you you in a blood transfusion) are enucleated, or lack a nucleus. They don't have DNA in them, so the problem with nuking blood would not be "mutations in the DNA" but rather busting open the RBCs as they heat up and the water inside them expand.

When they burst, and are injected into a person, the body recognizes the busted RBCs as an injury, and something that needs to clot.

Basically, they transfused her with a time bomb for a blood clot, and she died from that.

Other critters (birds, and I think reptiles, though I could be wrong) have nucleated blood cells.

Also lots of irrational hate for vaccinations on this site. Who cares that we no longer have Polio, Small Pox, HiB meningitis, and have greatly reduced the numbers of countless other diseases in this country: there's total bullshiat reports of increased autism in vaccinated children! Fight the man!

There is absolutely nothing in this world that pisses me off more than pseudo-science and pseudo-medicine. Fark you, Kevin Trudeau. Fark you, Joseph Mercola. Fark you, HIV denies. Fark you all.

Well, any electrical field is a magnetic field, (Electro magnetic field).

Nah, you need a changing electric field. If you've just got some charged plates, as long as the charges don't move you won't have a magnetic field. Magnetism is just the relativistic expression of the electric force- if you don't have movement of the charges, it reduces to a simple electric field.

We all know that this article is a bunch of poo. I suggest that everyone ignore it.

Of course, this flipping article will be circulated by all sorts of well meaning, but misguided twits. Way to feed an urban myth. Next thing you know, people will start believing in leprechauns, peagasuses, samsquatches, jesuses, etc.

I thought that standing in front of a microwave actually wasn't bad for you. Microwaves have a certain frequency and wavelength and the wavelength is larger than the holes in the mesh screen which block the waves, therefore, waves can not make it through the window.

This article is a crock!

Here's the Norma Levitt lawsuit for anyone that's interested. If you don't want to read the entire article, here's the reason that heating blood in a microwave is not safe (this is from the article's footnotes)..."Heating blood in this manner destroys the red blood cells, resulting in "gross hemolysis" of the blood, releasing large amounts of potassium. Excessive potassium, when introduced into the body, is often fatal. The practice of warming Intravenous (IV) fluids, other than blood, in the microwave was an accepted practice at Hillcrest Medical Center, as reflected in its written procedures."

I don't own a micro-wave because I don't enjoy using them... but skimming over TFA I found this treasure...

Most of my clients came back to see me after about two weeks. In the early days I found that many who came back were not much better. I found that they were again `out of balance'. That is, their electrical circuits were not working correctly (which is common for many people). It was therefore not surprising that they were not much better, because the body does not begin to fully fix itself until the electrical circuits are in balance.

The question was, why did their electrical circuits go out of balance?

I'm assuming that the author's reasoning for including this was that anyone who bought into his previous mumbo-jumbo surely is too lazy/scared to read any further. After all, their monitor is transfering this information via RADIAMAZATION!!!

WBlows: I've always found it interesting that the vast majority
of people don't know how to use the power control.
Practically all microwaves will heat things in 10% increments from 10 up to 100.
Virtually everyone just blasts at 100% power whatever they have in it, even if they're just warming something up.

We're not too bright in America. That's why microwave ovens sent to the USA are quite often enhanced by the addition of a 'popcorn' button much to the amusement of our international friends, the ones we have left anyway.

It kills me how much someone can butcher scientific logic and reasoning by only seeing the results in their own light.

Microwaves are farking microwaves. Cooking is farking cooking. Anything cooked is going to have those carcinogenic substance cause it was farking heated to the point of severe 3rd degree burns. Because you cooked it, not because of the demonic microwave.

You people are right, red blood cells don't have a nucleus and therfore don't have much dna.

However, red blood cells do have transmembrane proteins, and hemaglobin, the 4 segmented compound which carries oxygen.

Microwave radiation does alter proteins. The statement about intracellular potassium is correct, it would be harmful. Moreover, a bunch of damaged proteins will likely be recognized as foreign antigens and could also lead to anaphylactic shock.

The nurse was an idiot and should loose her license.

The statement about heated meat containing carcinogens is not unique to microwaves. If you heat meat by frying, grilling, or baking, you also create carcinogens. Any overcooked meat has more carcinogens that other meat.

However, the digestive system breaks down said carcinogens. If the lady drank the blood she would not have died (except for perhaps anemia.)

/delusional, malinformed article

I find it completely hysterical that people fall for the "microwaved blood" story as a reason for thinking that a microwave oven is dangerous. Umm - ok, let's be fair here and cook some blood on the stovetop and see if that kills someone too - OMG it DOES! BAN STOVETOPS! Let's see the logic here - cook the blood and make it DEAD, then shove it into someone's circulatory system - yeah - prolly a bad idear.

The same shiat goes for the "microwaved vs. tap water" plant experiment. Complete hogwash.

Cell phones probably do more harm to cells than microwave ovens.

You're absolutely right. The less-than-one-watt transmitter in your cell phone is surely more dangerous than the thousand-watt transmitter in your microwave.

Dear Author,
In order to prevent the Government Microwave Malnutrition Social Engineering Committee from reading your thoughts, please cap your skull with tin foil, override the doorswitch on your microwave and please, only think while your head is in the microwave and it is in operation.

Irradiation of Food: (Note: Irradiation is not the same as microwaving, but they are similar in that both use unnatural frequencies to alter food).

Clearly if this is true, then fire is far more dangerous to use for cooking than microwaves. After all, the radiation emitted by fire is at far higher frequencies ZOMG.

These people need to stop drinking the kool-aid.

Look, if someone can come up with a better way to stay warm during the winter than drawing your own blood, microwaving it and injecting it back in again, I would love to hear about it. Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge no other such system exists.

When I started dating my wife she told me that microwaved food was bad for you because the microwave would ionize the food. This would cause wastes in your body to stick to it which in turn makes it more difficult for your body to eliminate.

Whether or not you believe that, check out the ingredients and nutritional information for microwavable food, like those convienent TV dinners that take 10 minutes in the microwave (as opposed to 60 minutes in a regular oven.) They're laden with chemicals, perservatives, and high in fat.

Even if microwave ovens are harmless, and even if microwaves don't make food dangerous, most of the food we put into the microwave is already poisonous. So simply by avoiding microwave food and cooking real food more often, you will feel better, if for no other reason that non-microwaved food tastes better, and therefore makes you feel happier, more content.

amuro98: When I started dating my wife she told me that microwaved food was bad for you because the microwave would ionize the food. This would cause wastes in your body to stick to it which in turn makes it more difficult for your body to eliminate.

Damn dude. No flame intended, but "my wife told me" is about as good as "I saw this on TV once".

Fact: Microwaves produce non-ionizing radiation. The definition of which is: "electromagnetic radiation that does not carry enough energy to ionize atoms or molecules - that is, to completely remove an electron from an atom or molecule."

Fact: Non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation cannot "ionize the food."

Fact: An electric oven produces electromagnetic radiation in the infrared wavelength. People don't fear electric ovens because they are familiar to ignorant laymen.

Holy crap, this went green?! *First greenlight dance* I accidentally found this BS article while looking for information on phased antenna arrays for wifi/cellular communications.
As long as the seals on your oven are in good shape, it's no more harmful to you than the toaster.

I recently heard that outside, which they say is the big room past the scary 'exit' door (which I take to mean 'do not enter') with the blue ceiling, that some IDIOT has actually installed a goddamned UNCONTROLLED FUSION REACTOR that just HANGS ON THE CEILING 12 HOURS a FREAKING DAY! Don't they know that they are BOMBARDING everyone with UNCONTROLLED RADIATION? There's something about Ozone to soak up the radiation like a big ol' sponge, but its just SMOG! Don't they know ANYTHING? I mean I saw a PICTURE of it once and it was SO BRIGHT that people couldn't even LOOK at it! As much as the flourescents buzz I can't imagine the NOISE it must make!

That is the single stupidest thing I have ever read on Fark.

Agreed. The part about microwaves creating new life forms was particularly memorable.

2007-03-30 08:57:29 PM
Actually, microwaves are used to heat frozen blood and plasma in hospital blood banks. Special microwaves, calibrated to a specific power output and with built in shaking apparatus to prevent areas being overheated and boiled. No such protections in the nurses lounge. It isn't microwaves, its the uneven heating/ boiling that lyses the cells and denatures the proteins.

They probably mean like infrared light (radiant heat). That's a "natural frequency" you can use to cook your food.
