(Atlanta Journal Constitution)   Art displayed at Atlanta's City Hall says it's "OK to hate the black man." Oh wait, no it doesn't, because that would be bigoted   (ajc.com) divider line 216

B..B..B..But it's ART.

I could take a dump in a dirty ashtray and get it displayed somewhere.

Politically, it's OK to hate.

So, I take it no one RTFA? I'm almost certain submitter didn't read it.

From the Artist: "What I'm trying to say is that right now, the only politically correct form of prejudice is that anyone can say anything about a white person," Alvillar said. "I think that's wrong, but it happens to be a reality and that is the idea of the first sentence.

He agrees with you, idiot.

"It's kind of racist, depending on where you stand. But everyone has a right to voice what they feel. That's what America is about."

Rarely have I felt the urge to reach thru the internet and biatchslap someone.

He agrees with you, idiot.

Submitter here. I read TFA, actually, and I know what the artist said. However, that viewpoint won't come across to 99.9% of the people that see the artwork. They'll just see that according to artwork displayed in a government building, it's ok to hate the white man.

Better read the article the first time you click - after that it asks for registration.

Yeah, and 99.9% of the people are idiots, what's your point?

See here's the thing about art:

It used to be (i.e. pre-1900) that the only things required to enjoy/understand art was an aesthetic sense, and maybe a knowledge of the classical stories to fully understand the title.

It is only in the last hundred years or so that deeply metaphorical art - art with a message besides religiosity or beauty - really became a force. Yet, Western values on art are still based in the "everyone should be able to get it" mode, at least for laypersons.

We shouldn't restrict this guy's art because many people wont understand it. Far from it, we should support this art for that very reason.

"Politically its OK to hate the white man"

The fact that it was displayed proves that it's true. If you have a problem with anything, that should be it.

Support it with your own private donations, fine. It shouldn't be funded with taxpayer money, however.

So what do you think the over/under odds are for Jesse Jackson leading a protest against the racism inherent to the system...?

Was this art funded with taxpayer money? Or is it merely being displayed in City Hall? I agree with you on the taxpayer money thing, FWIW.

Paedophile_Deluxe: The fact that it was displayed proves that it's true. If you have a problem with anything, that should be it.

You're one of the 99.9% of the people who doesn't get it, aren't you?

"I think that's wrong, but it happens to be a reality and that is the idea of the first sentence. The second sentence is made to make you think about where you stand if you have been a victim."

What am I missing? I don't really have a problem with it, but it is true.

Try me. I'm very willing to listen. Was there any depth to it beyond "zOMG Jesse Jackson is Teh stoopidt!" ?

Paedophile_Deluxe: What am I missing? I don't really have a problem with it, but it is true.

Right, it *is* true...but it's also wrong. Hence the purpose of the piece. Atlanta City Hall, by hanging this piece is *not* endorsing the notion that Hating White People is OK, they are endorsing the artist's message that the notion that hating white people is OK is wrong.

That's why I don't have any problem with them doing this, I agree with the artist, and Atlanta City hall.

2007-03-29 03:56:25 PM
Why shouldn't it be funded with taxpayer money? If you can find the part of the Constitution that allows the government to take one person's money and give it to artists who otherwise couldn't earn a dime with their chosen trade, please let me know.

2007-03-29 03:58:30 PM
"they are endorsing the artist's message"

Why the hell is it the government's responsibility to endorse an artist's message, no matter what it is? Should Bush set aside funds to bankroll Toby Keith's next album because he likes its patriotism?

2007-03-29 03:59:17 PM
jgm1976: Support it with your own private donations, fine. It shouldn't be funded with taxpayer money, however.

Why?

You're not expected to agree with everything taxes pay for. Far from it, it's expected that you won't agree with huge amounts of it. Should the Iraq war be stopped just because I don't like paying for it? No (it should be stopped for other reasons, heh). Similarly, this shouldn't be stopped because you don't like its message.

The entire point of government endowment of the arts is to encourage cultural growth. Growth, by nature, is painful. Read a book, watch a movie, enjoy a painting. Face difficult arguments, and wrestle with them.

1. On the federal level, you are correct, this is not a power given to the government. However, on the state and local level this is a power that the people can decide to give to their government. If you don't like it, you can vote people in office on the state and local levels who wish to repeal this ability.

2. What led you to assume that taxpayer money on any level is being used to support this artist or his message anyway?

Speaking as a white man ... from what I can tell it is ok to hate the white man.
It's socially ok because we're the ones that are still in most positions of power in this country. Us picking on anyone else is considered an abuse of power ... bla bla bla.
It doesn't bug me, it's just the way things are.

I suppose it's just admitting it publicly that's bad.

I suppose it's just admitting it publicly that's bad.

Actually, it's kind of liberating. Think about it - no matter what you say or do, you will ALWAYS be hated and despised.

So just do whatever it is you were going to do, say whatever it is you were going to say. Why hold back? They'll hate you no matter what, right? Might as well just say what's on your mind.

This has been my mantra whether I am "despised" or not. If someone hates me for the color of my skin, their opinion isn't really worth much consideration anyway.

This is stupid. As is the Confederate flag on government buildings.

2007-03-29 05:22:37 PM
I'm fine with it as long as it doesn't depict harming the President. As cathartic as that kind of art may be, it would embolden our enemies.

Actually the washington post reported on an art piece that was a piece of crap, literally. the guy wanted to find something that was the smallest piece of something that people would still be disgusted at.

the WaPo reported on it because someone lost the art piece, and the guy had to go.. well.. 'make' more.

Wow dude, you're like real deep and stuff.

Or you're a %100 pompous ass.

This doesn't just hold true for the white man. I try to practice it every day, being who and what I am. As a matter of fact, it's pretty universal.

As a white male it is merely redundant that I am ALSO easily hated for the content of my character.

/Just call me cracker.

I didn't know that I needed any affirmations to hate white people. I'm secure enough in my hatered of white people that I don't need to make excuses why. I just do.
