He's like the next Robert DeNiro, except he's FABULOUS!

At least it's not another of their "Irish American" pieces.

/nothing wrong with the movies themselves
//but we're not the Sopranos

guys seriously, this is getting out of hand.

Sincerely,
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp

I liked Gangs of New York and The Departed, so this is fine by me. I've tried to hate DiCaprio for the better half of his career, but the guy really is a great actor.

Gangs of New York - best of '02
The Aviator - one of the top 5 of '04
The Departed - best of '06

Bring on your Wall Street movie.

Scorsese directed DiCaprio were this year's Oscar-winner "The Departed" and several other films.
?

Worst sentence ever.

seconded. and i've tried to hate him solely because of titanic, a movie i've never seen.

this movie is going to win him an oscar.

You should hate him for The Beach. Just about everything else he has done has been good though.

/Should have won an Oscar for What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

homarjr: i've tried to hate him solely because of titanic, a movie i've never seen.

Another kindred spirit.

I used to enjoy watching movies where he'd die in the end (The Quick & The Dead is the only one that pops into my head) and I hate titanic, though I've never seen it, and blamed him for it.

Yet The Departed was farking amazing.

Good work, DiCaprio, to get me to not hate you anymore. I didn't think it would ever happen.

2007-03-26 02:02:34 PM
It must be every actor's dream to have America's greatest living director want you in all his movies.

2007-03-26 02:15:14 PM
Catch me if you can sealed the deal for me. After that I was excited to watch the Aviator and the Departed.

Way to prove me wrong Nancy Boy.

I may not be able to stand the little weasel, but I have to admit that he & Scorsese make good movies. Marty S has an even better way of getting a good performance DiCaprio than Kirk Cameron ever could.

2007-03-26 02:16:34 PM
a good performance FROM DiCaprio

/fixed it for me

2007-03-26 02:34:34 PM
Awesome. DiCaprio is an awesome actor, and I hope we get as many movies as possible out of Scorsese before he retires or kicks off.

me too, catch me if you can was when I realized how incredible an actor he is.

remember in the 80s when he did that show about how his weener hurt?

that was awesome.

This movie will have:
Sloppy editing
A Rolling Stones song
A scene featuring wet Leo
Fanboys creaming themsevles even though it's not that good
/thinks dicaprio is very talented
//thinks Scorsese used to be

2007-03-26 02:58:03 PM
The Departed was overrated. Better than average, but not a top 100 of all time flick

2007-03-26 03:09:00 PM
Gangs and Aviator cured me of the irrational DiCaprio hatred I had nurtured ever since Titanic. And at the risk of being Farkulated within an inch of my life I liked him in Blood Diamond as much as in Departed.

2007-03-26 03:14:38 PM
I like remakes or "re-imaginings" as much as anyone, but the Departed didn't live up to the source material.

Not a knock on either person, just not that great a film.

So ummm, mix in one part DiCaprio, one part Scorsese, some classic rock, a lesser known version of a popular classic rock song for the trailer and voila! another Academy Award nomination. Only this time he won't get the Lifetime Achievment Award masquerading as Best Director.

2007-03-26 03:20:11 PM
Great, another gay porno.

2007-03-26 03:22:03 PM
I've liked DiCaprio in most of the movies he's done...particularly;
This Boy's Life
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Quick and the Dead
Romeo + Juliet
Streets of New York
Aviator
Blood Diamond
The Departed

I mean, really, it's a damn good resume. Even if you don't add Titanic, the biggest money-maker in history.

We're not at odds on his/their previous work. Just The Departed and this new one. And I am not arguing that The Departed wasn't one of the best of 2006, just that 2006 sucked and its probably not even one of Scorsese's five best movies.

2007-03-26 03:48:01 PM
Regardless of DeCaprio/Marty connection on Gangs, Departed, and the Spruce Goose movie, those are viewed as SCORSESE movies, NOT DeCaprio movies.

Impressed by Marty.

Leo? Not so much

2007-03-26 03:57:59 PM
He is one of the best actors around...bring it on

2007-03-26 03:58:44 PM
While I did enjoy The Departed, it was probably because they mashed in more names than Pulp Fiction. Off the top of my head:

Jack Nicholson
Matt Damon
Leonardo DiCaprio
Mark Wahlberg
Martin Sheen
Alec Baldwin
Ray Winstone
Mark Rolston
James Badge Dale
Anthony Anderson

I'm surprised the psychologist role didn't go to another big name.

As far as I'm concerned, The Departed was really only great because of the acting. The story was relatively forgettable (the original notwithstanding) and when you've got actors as good as they are, you could have Michael Bay direct it and it would still be a great movie.

2007-03-26 03:59:03 PM
I used to despise DiCaprio in the same way I did boy bands but then I got over myself and open mindedly saw his acting and am glad I did.

It started with Catch Me If You Can, like others have mentioned.

2007-03-26 04:12:09 PM
The psychiatrist was going to be played by Kate Winslet, and then she pulled out because of scheduling conflicts.

2006 was a fine year, I figured. And to win an Oscar for directing, you have to be better than the other four nominees. That's it. It's not a "Lifetime Achievement Award masquerading as Best Director" because Scorsese made a lot of other great movies. He EARNED the Oscar for The Departed.

robsul82

He EARNED the Oscar for The Departed.

I'm not entirely certain I agree. He shot a remake of a movie with a boatload of extremely accomplished actors. A lot of very difficult work was already done for him. Of course, a lot of this is just personal taste, but I thought Clint Eastwood and Paul Greengrass did better directing jobs because they had less to work with and produced films of equal quality.

2007-03-26 04:34:31 PM
just like denzel washington earned his oscar for training day? me thinks not.

the academy loves giving out awards way too late for lesser movies and/or roles.

/loves the departed either way

2007-03-26 04:49:54 PM
I'm scoffing at all you people who hated Leo in the beginning.

If I worked for him (or on him), I would be getting a kick out of these replies.

I've loved Leo since "Growing Pains" and have (damn near stalkishly) followed his career since then.

2007-03-26 05:28:58 PM
Penalize a director for the acting talent he attracts? I think not. Flags/Letters and United 93 were not of equal quality, beyond that the film is not what's in question here, and the direction of it is.

Homarjr apparently doesn't know Denzel Washington already had an Oscar for Glory in 1989. Denzel won because 1) he's such a niiiiiiice guy and Russell Crowe's so meeeeean and 2) he's black. That was the year of the black actor, and I'm sure many voters were imagining just such a moment as we received when Denzel got to the stage and raised his Oscar to Sidney Poitier, who did the same with his just-received Lifetime Achievement Oscar, when they cast their vote for Denzel. Again, The Departed merely had to be better than the films, performances, and directing jobs it was against, NOT be better than Scorsese's past work. To suggest otherwise is totally unfair.

robsul82: Again, The Departed merely had to be better than the films, performances, and directing jobs it was against, NOT be better than Scorsese's past work.

So you are admitting that it was a crappy field this year.

2007-03-26 06:17:20 PM
How on Earth do you draw THAT conclusion? The Departed was head and shoulders better than the nominated films. If that's what you mean by "field," than yeah. I would've gone much differently on my personal top 5 of 2006, starting with giving a Picture nomination to Children of Men.

Yeah thats pretty much what I am saying. Considering the Academy missed Children Of Men and Pan's Labyrinth I'd say it was a weak field of nominees, which all but guaranteed the win for The Departed and Scorsese.

2007-03-26 06:32:09 PM
The Departed's win was in some doubt, as some thought the Academy would feel Scorsese's win for direction was "enough" and would give Picture to Little Miss Sunshine or Babel. Thank God we avoided that shiat.

2007-03-26 07:17:15 PM
I think part of the problem is that the director's job is extremely blurred. None of us can say exactly what Martin Scorsese did in terms of direction. Did he plan out every single move and every single expression, or did he shiat in a pot and fark a few whores in his trailer? Consider also that a substantial number of shots were copied directly from Infernal Affairs.

Flags/Letters and United 93 were not of equal quality, beyond that the film is not what's in question here, and the direction of it is.

First part opinion, second part the direction of the movie is directly linked to its overall quality. How many best directors were nominated for movies that weren't great, or recognized by many critics as great?

Scorsese is a terrific director, his movies are consistently good and well-told. I just don't happen to think that he deserved it for The Departed. On paper, a combination of that cast and Martin Scorsese should have made a movie that topped everyone's best-ever list. It was good, but extremely overrated.

Departed was good. But did it deserve an Oscar? Maybe. But Scorsese should have won it for Goodfellas.

I wanted to hate Leo after Titanic. But after I saw...

What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Romeo + Juliet
Streets of New York
Catch Me If You Can
Gangs of New York
The Aviator
Blood Diamond
The Departed

Leo has become probably the only actor I will watch a movie just because he is in it.

2007-03-26 11:16:43 PM
Movie casts are not sports teams. Put all of those actors in Halloween 6, you should have the greatest horror movie ever? That was ridiculous, sorry.

Almost every single year there's one or even two directors nominated for Oscars without their pictures being nominated. You CAN separate direction from an entire film. Driving Miss Daisy won Best Picture without its director even being nominated.

Halloween 6 with all those actors? I'd watch it. Think about it. It would rock.

I think Leo is a dick in real life, but he's an awesome actor and he chooses his roles very well. I'll watch pretty much anything with him because odds are high it'll be good.

Two things killed the Academy Awards for me:

1. Moulin Rouge! did not win in 2001, but Chicago won in 2002. And Chicago beat out The Two Towers. Whatever.

2. Lord of the Rings getting ignored until Return of the King, the worst of the three movies. (and by "worst" I mean it's still totally farking awesome and kicks Chicago's ass!) They ignored all the actors from LotR, too. Farkers!

I haven't watched the Oscars since 2001.

Exactly. They play these games where they say "we want to keep things interesting and we know LOTR should win at least one, but if they/Peter Jackson win back to back it suddenly puts him in elite company even though he's not that great, so we'll just ignore the first two and have one end all recognition of the series when the third film wraps". Sometimes it works out but most of the time it ends up with people's lesser works getting the honors because stupid ass voters decide it's finally "their time".
