Hm. I think there's lots of book readers on Fark.

That said, a merger of Borders and Barnes & Noble would be...unfortunate.

Yep.

Bad enough when, apparently, Barnes and Noble absorbed B. Dalton, and then closed the B. Dalton. The only bookstores left in town are Borders and Barnes and Noble, now.

Speak for yourself. I'm very well-read. It's well-known.

Amazon.com (used usually)
abebooks.com
alibris.com

2007-03-22 02:24:02 PM
I've burned all of my books a long time ago. Books are the works of Satan...

2007-03-22 02:24:34 PM
I think subby tried way, way too hard on that headline for the little result it produced.

2007-03-22 02:24:59 PM
I bought a load of books today because I thought I wasn't reading enough. Figures.

The "sit down, drink coffee, and read our books and mags for free" model may have something to do with it.

2007-03-22 02:25:38 PM
I get all my books from BN.com and they pay me a commision check... w00t!

Oh, and by the way Smitty. I can read just fine. Your mom's panties read "September" when she slipped them off in my bedroom last night.

Austinites: We are blessed with Book People. We also have the last-remaining BookStop (which is just a BnN with a different sign; apparently BnN was too cheap to buy a BnN sign...)

As long as one of them comes to Homestead. We need at least one bookstore in town.

degreeless: I go to Barnes and Noble when I'm looking for a book to order on Amazon.

Problem is that when I want to buy a book, I don't want to have to wait a week to read it--I want to buy my book, drive home, and start reading it that day.

Like it matters. Real men know that the best place to get overpriced books is in the airport. $9.95 for a 10 year old Ludlum paperback? I'll take 8!

Used bookstores are nice for getting properly-priced books.

Unfortunately, they tend to only be open during those times of day that I'm at work.

Declining book sales? It must be all those people illegally downloading books from the internet! Just like declining sales of CDs, the decline in book sales is largely due to the fact that people today have so many more options with their disposable income, such as DVDs, broadband internet, cable television packages, video games, and the millions of hobbies that the internet makes it easy to pursue and afford.

Borders owns Walden

so that would mean they own all the national book chains

correct me if I am wrong but don't we have some kinds of laws against that

2007-03-22 02:30:12 PM
For some reason when I was young I always used to see Barnes and Nobles as Barons and Nobles.

Back on topic, the thing with books is that I honestly believe that sooner or later they are going to be phazed out by e-books which make life easier when you need to carry around reading material.

B&N need to get themselves ahead of the curve to insure their survival.

Since when did Microsoft care?

That's what they were saying in the early '90's.

/e-Book readers are still too damn expensive and short on battery life.

Screw that, I go to Atlantic Book Warehouse and get books 30%-%50 off the prices printed on the back covers.

www.decklinsdomain.com

That actually looks like a comic book cover, whereas the Dragonlance books I read are like pocket-books, 300 or so pages, 4"x6"...like this:

upload.wikimedia.org

And damn, they keep changing the cover artwork, making me want to buy the same books over and over again...

Reading books is one of the things I do to get away from monitors and television screens.

Books are one of the things I like to buy new. I like being the first person to open a book that I'm about to read, and I like to be the person who crinkles the pages, folds corners down, etc. I don't buy them used unless I'm buying it for something other than pleasure reading. I like walking into a bookstore and just prowling through the shelves for an hour or so, getting some coffee or something afterwards and reading the five or six new titles I've picked up to last the next month or two.

especially those 'required reading' books for school

"Sure, we have 50 copies of The Great Gatsby. Seems nobody likes it enough to keep it after the assignment is over..."

Wait a second, I thought they were coffee shops that sold cds. They have books too?

2007-03-22 02:31:51 PM
A book is what I read at night while most people are watching TV.

I don't even own a TV.

2007-03-22 02:32:24 PM
Will they still have the Starbucks? Because the books and the coffee combination give me the perfect setup when I want to be all pseudointellectualical....

this will NEVER happen... there are waaay too many people who prefer hardcopy to soft. It's a lot easier to read on paper for a lot of people, as well as easier to edit, highlite, and take notes on.

2007-03-22 02:32:48 PM
You're not a loser, starlost. Just thrifty!

Books, especially hard covers, are too expensive. I'm not going to shell out $30 for a book i'll read once. I'll put in a hold at the library and wait my turn. Paperbacks are getting darn expensive too.

I get coupons from Borders in email and i only use them if there is something i can't live without. Most of the time, they go unused.

2007-03-22 02:32:50 PM
There's a wonderful used bookstore called The Griffon where I live. I can go there with three dollars and come back with a month's worth of good books.

2007-03-22 02:33:00 PM
Maybe poor book sales will convince people to stop publishing worthless drivel. That stuff belongs on a blog anyway.

You just brought back a lot of memories. I'm gonna order the cronicles right now. Haven't read that series in a min!

I agree...people should be supporting their local independently owned book sellers. I know it's not always an option, depending on what you need or where you are, but if you can't promise to try, at least try to try.

I like both new and used books--there's something about the smell in a used bookstore that makes me feel very comfortable...it's kind of like sitting down in an old, well-worn chair.

That, and sometimes used bookstores have bookstore cats, who are the best kind of cats, in my opinion--they have a lot of character, tend to be mellow....

Heheheh...yeah, that and Shakespeare.

>>The "sit down, drink coffee, and read our books and mags for free" model may have something to do with it.>>

Don't forget "and spill said coffee on the books and then don't pay for them".

I started working for B&N last year and have always wondered how the place manages to turn a profit. Especially since there's a Border's right across the street. Not to mention the rampant shoplifting the place endures. This article doesn't surprise me at all. It will really piss me off if the place eventually folds, though. B&N is a nice place to work, even if it pays nothing.

I'm still trying to find one that's open nights and weekends, personally, in this area....

Unfortunately, I live in 'yuppieville' at the moment.

phillydrifter - I have many of the DL chronicles comics and the guy who draws the covers works at the comic/coffie shop where I buy them. So their signed. Awesome.

Anyway, my house has an actual library. I buy most of my books from local shops and the half-price book store.

The lack of book lovers remaining in America, especially in my age group (25), makes me sad.

I, for one, always have at least two books going, and another stack of 4 or 5 on my night stand waiting for me.

I have loved to read since I was just a little kid, and even with all of the tvs/dvds/computers/radios/ipods/etc., nothing is as comforting to me as a good book.

In fact, I use the enjoyment of reading as a criteria when dating. When I meet a new guy, one of the first questions I ask is, "what are you reading right now?" If they make some comment about how they hate books or say that the last book they read was in high school or answer "does Maxim count?," I know they probably aren't for me.

And, to keep this less of a thread-jack, I don't particularly want B and B&N to merge. Mostly because there will be less variety and competition if they merge, but also because BNB sounds too much like TNT, and that might tempt the terrorists.

I buy my books at the Texaco. They gots more pictures in em.
