Learning From the Hydraulic Fluid Incident

Dzau says DUHS will emerge stronger from the incident

Note to Editors: Dr. Victor J. Dzau is chancellor for health affairs and president and CEO of the Duke University Health System. This article originally appeared in the July 15 edition of The News and Observer.

Durham, N.C. -- Learning from the hydraulic fluid incident

On Dec. 29, 2004, my mobile phone buzzed. It was the chief operating officer of the Duke University Health System calling with bad news.

Six months earlier, I had accepted the honor to lead this complex organization employing more than 18,000 dedicated physicians and employees. Patients come from across the globe to seek care at Duke, reflecting our ranking as one of the nation's top hospital systems.

Every time a patient improves under our care, we quietly celebrate. We focus relentlessly on compassionate care of the highest quality. That's why we're here. And yet, as in any large organization, challenging issues can and do arise, try as you might to prepare for all contingencies.

My heart sank that December day as I heard the news: Our staff had discovered that some surgical instruments had been inadvertently washed in hydraulic fluid instead of detergent at our two community hospitals, Duke Health Raleigh and Durham Regional.

Pretty good. How's your bankruptcy paperwork coming along? Kind of foolish getting that major illness, wasn't it?

MRSA has been found in US hospitals ^ since 1961.

How's that private health care working out for you?

My mom got infected in a hospital and she's farking dead now.

Superbugs are cropping up here, too. Has nothing to do with socialized medicine. Has a lot to do with the over-prescription of antibiotics and antibacterials.

PSA: FINISH ALL YOUR GOD DAMN MEDS AS PRESCRIBED.

Unshavenhelga: PSA: FINISH ALL YOUR GOD DAMN MEDS AS PRESCRIBED.

And DON'T REQUEST ANTIBIOTICS FOR MINOR INCONVENIENCES.

/You do NOT need antibiotics for a g-ddamn cold, nor for the 'flu--they will do NOTHING.

2007-03-21 12:26:25 PM
Thank you, Unshavenhelga and muninsfire.

Way too many people taking antibiotics "just because I have a cold" and not finishing their meds. Jackasses.

2007-03-21 01:04:37 PM
That's not crust on the surgical tools, that's seasoning.
Like good cast iron!

Seriously though, people keep over using antibiotics and anti-bacterial everything. That's only speeding up the natural selection and making sure the strongest bugs survive to replicate.

Well I do have to say that free health care in canada rocks, and the fact there is no 2 speed system rocks a lot more.

An american documentary, shown on Discovery, compared 3 systems.
1. American system. Nothing is free
2. Canadian system. Most is free, with sometimes moderator tickets.
3. Cuban system. Everything is free.

Conclusion of that documentary was:
American system sucks.
Canadian system is the best of the 3.
Cuban system has very good features that could be used by the other 2 systems. Ohh and if it wasnt for the underfunding of this country because of the american embargo, it would have been the best of the 3.

American people who knew, asking american doctors. So, americans, how's that private health care system working for you?

2007-03-21 01:47:32 PM
Lonestar Ohh and if it wasnt for the underfunding of this country because of the american embargo, it would have been the best of the 3.

Every other nation on the planet has the ability to trade with Cuba if they wish. The embargo is silly from the standpoint of American interests, but most of the blame for the economic state of Cuba lies with their leadership.

As a Republican I don't know if it's silly or not. Seems damn inconsistent to trade with China in order to promote freedom, but embargo Cuba in order to promote freedom.

Stated while the Fark Left enters the next religion thread ...

I came in here to cue someone biatching about socialized healthcare ...

That's a gem in and of itself. I love when posters say, "I came in to post a pro statement because *I knew* someone else was going to post and anti statement!"

And the circle is now complete.

"So, americans, how's that private health care system working for you?"

Pretty darn good. At least I don't have to wait 3 months for an MRI that could save my life.

I am alive today because the USA does NOT have socialized government controlled health care. I had a tumor called a lymphangioma. I was going to wait to get it taken care of. Instead, I had it removed that same month.

If I had waited longer, doctor said it would've turned into deadly Lymphangiosarcoma that very few people survive. So, if I were in Canada or England, and was forced to wait, I would've died.

//does NOT want the government in control of my healthcare. They can't even get SS or taxes right!

Conclusion of that documentary was:

And the producers of the documentary, of course, had no particular bias.

The Cuban system is good except for embargo issues? ... hahahahaha! Yeah, that's why Castro's simple operation, with all his countries resources at his beck and call, became life threatening! Why don't you ask some ex-Cubans about their healthcare system?

Tell you what, go for a free x-ray (you do live in Canada, right?), and then get a dog an x-ray at the vet where you have to pay. See who gets their x-ray first.

Your dog want radiation!

Last, our system, I'll admit, is indeed crappy. But it is the fault of excessive government regulation of hospitals, doctors, HMOs, etc., that causes a significant portion of the prices. Healthcare fifty years ago wasn't that expensive and the quality was fine. What's the main thing that changed? Government got heavily involved.

is that supposed to be better in some way than the canadian system, or are you just stating they are the same?

2007-03-21 02:19:36 PM
I've heard of this problem years ago. As the instruments get more and more complicated the people who clean them stay at the same skill level. For example it's a lot easier to wash as scalpel than a telescoping probe.
/you would think people smart enough to graduate medical school would be smart enough to see that coming

That sucks. But it doesn't prove private medicine is better then socialized medicine. When I went in to the ER with stomach pains, I had a doctor see me within 20 minutes, and into a CT scan within the hour. And the reason it took so long to get into the CT scan was because you have to spend 20 minutes drinking the contrast stuff. When I went in with flu symptoms or other non-vital symptoms, I waited about 12 hours while other more important people went ahead of me. I still saw a doctor the same day. It's all about proper triage, not how much you can pay. Those stories you here about people waiting for months for a simple scan, they're most coming out of Alberta where they're pushing private medicine while cutting funding to public health care. So don't put too much stock in those stories...

Guys, stop fighting and solve the problem! Look, the hospital's in central Alberta, yes? Open the windows for a half hour, mop with Lysol to pick up the little cysts the bacteria bundle into, and Bob's your uncle.

I knew, the second that this story broke, that there would be the usual gang of twits who don't actually know anything about the Canadian system falling all over themselves to blame this on public healthcare. Problem is, all it takes is a single example of the same thing (MRSA or poorly-sterilized equipment) happening in the US system and the theory dies a quick death. Anyone care to wager there has never been a similar incident in the US system? Idiocy is system-independent.

I love the US-Canada healthcare system pissing matches. From the perspective of most of the planet's population it's like watching the owner of a brand new Mercedes and the owner of a brand new BMW passionately and angrily arguing over who has the better navigation system, all while you desperately try to cobble together a 10-speed from discarded parts you found at the dump...
