I think I'll stick to the rivers and lakes that I'm used to.

2007-03-20 01:47:05 AM
Yeah, but when I pull the plug in my bathtub, I get some kickass whirlpools. Beat that, Niagara.

Those are the coolest pics of Niagara Falls you'll see all day.

2007-03-20 01:48:22 AM
Very cool. I've spent so many years taking guests to see the falls that I got bored with it. But these spark a new interest in it.

2007-03-20 01:48:23 AM
It looked better before us white folk took charge.

/no postcards showing that pristine aerial view huh?

2007-03-20 01:49:21 AM
I live in Niagara Falls, ON. It sucks. The only cool thing about the falls is the mist.

2007-03-20 01:49:22 AM
Is it worth going to see? I've been to the Grand Canyon, after all.

The day has just begun! I'd rather not commit just yet.

2007-03-20 01:51:31 AM
If you're going to go, take a ride on the boat. Everything else is just rather blah. And loud. And wet.

Like sex with your wife after 30 years, I guess...

meh.

2007-03-20 01:55:09 AM
It looks a lot less imposing from up there, doesn't it?

2007-03-20 01:56:05 AM
Eh.... some of those look like they were pulled from wikipedia. Some are genuinely authentic, but this isn't "cool enough" to make me keep the tab open on my browser for more then 10 seconds scrolling though it.

Ya want cool pictures of the Niagara Falls area, go look at pictures of the construction of the power plant (turbines as big as houses being brought in), and when they turned off the American side of the falls. I've seen the falls so many times, its just another river with an underwater cliff.

Yeah, these pics are at least 5 years old, and are laughablly out of date. I live about a 10 min walk away from that area, and have been working in the work in the area in the photos for about a decade.

Proof?

The Fallsview casino is still under construction, and looks like it's all exposed ground still.

Like 5 hotels have been built, or expanded upon since the pic was taken. Most noticablly the Minolta Tower area.

The farking Hooters / Fictional Niagara Drop Zone across the road from the Tourist Trap Denny's isn't even built yet.

Said Denny's got knocked down last year :( There goes my am coffee

THERE ISN'T ANY MIST AROUND THE CANADIAN FALLS!

If you've ever actually go and see the falls, you're only gonna be seeing a huge cloud of mist for about half a click all around where the actual falls is. Theres only like 2 hours out of the year when you can see anything close to these pics (thanks to all the hotels farking up the airflow, and the American industrial sector located directelly over the Niagara River that are smogging up the joint).

2007-03-20 02:39:25 AM
Don't people try to go over the falls in a barrel?

I'd like to see a picture of that.

2007-03-20 02:42:33 AM
I'm cool because I'm unimpressed.

2007-03-20 02:46:27 AM
Looks like the whole park needs a revamp. Victoria Falls has way better mist technology, plus for the size of the river the flow is pretty yawn-inducing.

Repeated for emphasis. Not to get into it, but didn't University at Buffalo study the effects of the hotels on the size of the mist plume?

@bozedtheatre: "I miss the Falls."

yes, it was a shame we had to bulldoze them, but - business is business!

All I see is a shiatload of urban sprawl, over what must have once been an absolutely beautiful sight.

Quite right, gberkeley.

I love Niagara Falls, but they've never looked so uninspiring as in those pictures.

I call bullshiat. I've been to the Falls a hundred times, and other than on bad weather days there's been no problem viewing either falls. The hotel-blocking-airflow and smog thing sounds like anti-development, anti-American urban myths.

2007-03-20 07:26:55 AM
the towns on either side of are an ugly scar on the landscape aren't they. it becomes pretty obvious from up above.

2007-03-20 07:31:41 AM
Um, no, not cool, crappy actually. About the same quality as google earth or what Zillow shows.

2007-03-20 07:48:33 AM
I'm a Niagara Falls, ON native.

I feel bad for anyone who has to live on the American side. Its pretty disgusting.

2007-03-20 07:52:50 AM
Niagara Falls must be seen at 2 times in the year.

Summer - when it's a clear day, at the right time of day, and you are in the right spot you can see a perfect rainbow going right into the bottom of the falls.

Winter - seeing the frozen falls all lit up at night, with ice covered railings everywhere it is literally a "winter wonderland".

Rest of the time just got to the casinos.

Blah, at least get pics that are within a year old.

These aren't real pics of Niagara Falls - you can't see the strip joints!

/decent golf courses, too!

2007-03-20 11:20:37 AM
OK, these pictures are OK... but they're so far away they don't really capture the scale and coolness of the falls.

To do so, I highly recommend a visit and participating in both a Maid of the Mist boat ride and a Cave of the Winds excursion. You will feel so incredibly tiny and at the mercy of nature in both instances.

Do them on a warm day, though!! You will get wet!!

They may be very touristy, but there's a reason why tons of people do them. They are frigging awesome.

I grew up in Buffalo and have done both a number of times, and it seriously never gets old.

2007-03-20 11:24:45 AM
In one of the pictures you can just about see my house (it's about 1 mile or so to the right).

Da Falls don't get old, but the potholes, crime, and dirt do after a while.

2007-03-20 12:07:42 PM
Damn I'm homesick now... I grew up in North Tonawanda about 15 miles away, use to go there all the time. the falls can never be given any justice unless you see them in person to experience.

2007-03-20 12:18:32 PM
Much cooler to see them from right up close.

But the towns on either side suck. Better tourist destination, just a few miles downriver, is Niagara on the Lake.

/But don't eat breakfast at the Prince of Wales hotel

2007-03-20 12:29:27 PM
Pics don't do it justice. Ride the "Maid of the Mist" if you really want to appreciate the falls.

2007-03-20 12:35:02 PM
Wow, I'm really surprised at how industrial it looks around there, what with all the highrise buildings and what looks like a suburbs on the Canadian side. I guess I'm used to things being more natural looking, being from the West and all.

/oh well

2007-03-20 12:53:02 PM
I visited the site a few years back, I was surprised at how much of a dump the American side is. Really sketchy, and i should know being from the wastelands of Milwaukee.

The falls are nice, but don't stay on the American side or go there at all if you can help it.

/nuke from orbit, we need to be sure.

Wow, 2nd comment, I'm impressed! I think the same thing every time I hear someone say "Niagara Falls".

NIAGARA FALLS! Slowly I turned. Step by step, inch by inch. I walked up to him and I smashed him, I cracked, I hit him I bopped him and bammed him then I riped him to pieces and I knocked him down!!

helchose

The US side (top center of the 1st pic) is very industrial. There are a half dozen chemical or former chemical companies in a couple mile stretch on 1 street, only about 5 minutes for the touristy area.

And those pics are really old. In the 3rd pic there is a yellow observation tower that looks like seagram's bottle (it used to be called seagram's tower) it is no longer the tallest building on that city block.

/works at one of the chemical plants
