Eventually they're going to run out of fall guys, and the truth will start coming out... we just need our Democratic Congress to keep at it and show the Administration what a coequal branch of government looks like.

Jesus, imagine if that coont Miers had gotten on the Supreme Court.

I mean, I don't think that Roberts and Alito are going to be great justices, but Miers would have been Clarence Thomas II -- an ideologue just filling a seat, and adding nothing to the body of work of the Court.

I'd rather see all this go towards a democratic win in '08. Short term retribution towards this administration is no substitute for better policy in the long run.

From TFA: "Presidential press secretary Tony Snow previously had asserted Miers was the person who came up with the idea, but he said Friday, "I don't want to try to vouch for origination." He said, "At this juncture, people have hazy memories."

Translation: At this juncture, everyone involved has retained outside counsel, and their lawyers are telling them to shut up.

I'm amazed at the "but... but Clinton..." comments on that page.

In case anyone is confused here:

When a new President takes office they appoint many people to many positions. They form a cabinet. They appoint an Attorney General and they select federal prosecutors. All of these positions go before confirmation hearings in front of Congress. THIS IS NORMAL.

What isn't normal is to put political pressure on federal prosecutors, fire them when they don't do what you want and replace them with cronies and administration insiders via "interim positions" without confirmation hearings.

2007-03-17 02:12:39 AM
I'll believe it when I see it.

Better yet, what I'd like to see is someone high up brought up on criminal charges. Too bad I don't see that happening.

I just wonder what kind of asshole they'll get to replace Gonzales.
Hell, I said it before, I'll say it again. Washington needs more dance parties...

sad thing is, the "without confirmation hearings" is a part thats legal, at least according to the Patriot Act.
Yup.
You really want a president, ANY president, appointing people to such important positions without any kind of oversight? I sure as hell don't.

While that would be the answer to many sane Americans' prayers, the horrifying reality is that while the bastard got us into this mess, it'll be up to him to get us out.

The even more horrifying reality is we will never see him impeached until he has some intern give him a BJ...then, maybe.

I always love asking NeoCons and Bushiates if they want Hillary Clinton to have all the power that Bush has been amassing. It's like they can't imagine that a Democrat might win the next election. They can't think further into the future than their next morning piss.

Tony Snow: "Thank you. The President accepted the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales just last saturday, as you recall. What has followed has been an extensive and intense search for an appointee capable of continuing the work of AG Gonzales. On behalf of the president, I am proud to announce his next choice for Attorney General, Michael 'Savage' Wiener. I will take no questions at this time and give the floor to Mr. Wiener."

Michael Savage: "BLAAAARGHHH! KILL THE DAMN DARKIES! MURDER! DEATH! PUT THEM IN CAMPS AND BREED THEIR WOMEN!"

With the progression from Reno to Ashcroft to Gonzalez I'm thinking Himmler would make a fine replacement.

Maybe we can get someone like Fitzpatrick who actually, I dunno, respects U.S. law? Nah, I'm smoking the crack pipe again. We're getting Himmler.

George Bush is like a hydra. You can cut off one of his many heads, but they just grow back and he keeps terrorizing the country-side, unharmed. This won't change anything. He'll just pick some other crazy jackass and the process will repeat. None of our so-called opposition leaders will do anything except bend over and do whatever he says. It's been the same garbage for the past 7 years.

Ok ok, I don't mean to be the old ball out in not joining a bash fest...I'm just still trying to find the scandal here. Let me see if I've got this straight...

The administration thought about removing all 93 U.S. attorneys at the start of Bush's second term. But after some talking, they went ahead and shortened the number to 8.

Administrations routinely remove attorneys, but they have traditionally done it at the start of first terms, either all at once (Clinton) or phasing out the previous administrations attorneys over the period of a few years (Reagan, W. Bush). Existing attorneys are removed frequently because of political allegiances, and new attorneys friendly to the current administration get hired. In either case, there is no law that states when attorneys can't be removed, or what allegiances these attorneys can have. Bush just did something very untraditional with the timing and amount removed.

Various reasons for given for their firings. One fired attorney mentioned that he "believed" it was because he didn't participate in a scandal. He mentioned he was contacted by a Republican, and this Republican later admitted that he did contact the attorney, but they strongly dispute the reasons for the contacts. Rove said it was because they felt 7 attorneys weren't playing ball with the administrations ideas. These reasons include refusing to seek the death penalty, refusing to go after illegal immigrants (which even Sen. Feinstein was mad at), etc.. Cynics and pessimists say it's because these attorneys were investigating the current administration, so the administration booted them. In short, does anyone have any actual reasons yet, or is this all speculation?

Also, 1 of the 8 US attorneys was simply going to be fired just so one of Rove's buddies could become a US attorney. While dirty sounding, replacing attorneys with political buddies apparently is par for the course for the last few decades.

No Democrat likes Gonzalez. Gonzalez also held a press conference and admitted mistakes.

What else am I missing? I'm trying to find the scandal here, but so far, I'm just seeing a sloppy attempt by the administration to fire attorneys at untraditional timings. Of course, there is always the accusation that these weren't just political firings, but revenge political firings because these attorneys wouldn't be unethical. But there is no evidence of this, still just accusations. Is there anything else here?
