From RTFA, this sounds like it was a pellet gun, not an airsoft gun.

Not the same thing.

They caused havoc in the neighbourhood by firing at random cars and signposts.

So this was not the first time he did this.

Unemployed Campbell explained that he had ensured he did not fire while buses or pedestrians passed his firing range.

Cars are ok, though?

Airsoft is a painball alternative that is not very dangerous. The pellet gun i had as a teen had a higher muzzle velocity than a .22 rifle. There is a serious difference.

But in America, a kid with a makeshift 'slingshot' out of a balloon gets arrested on felony charges!

"The pellet zipped through her open window and struck her in the hand, leaving her with a painful mark on her finger."

No jailtime? 240 hours community service instead? Considering the end result, it sounds just to me.

Rarely do judges seem to have their heads screwed on right these days. It's refreshing to hear a punishment fitting the crime for once.

"...it beggars belief that anyone that can think that firing an airgun could be in any doubt of the serious risk it could cause."

Better a beggarer than a buggerer be.

240 hours of community service isn't "a stern talking to."

Considering that it wasn't a real gun, and even though it was a really stupid thing to do, I think it's a pretty fair punishment.

It hit her in the hand. Is the repetition of the word "pregnant" throughout the article meant to imply that the fetus was somehow in danger? Did I miss some important bit in high school about the human hand's reproductive capabilities?

No, it's just meant to make people react in horror to the terrible offense that took place. If it was just a woman, it wouldn't be a big deal to most people, because nothing really happened. They tack on "pregnant" to make it into a bigger deal for all those people who put the knocked up on pedestals.

Also: 240 hours of public service isn't "a stern talking to." That would suck mightily, if you think about it.

Agreed, jail time wouldnt do anything more than the 240 hours of community service will. Think about it, thats 30/ 8 hour days of community service. At least this way he will be helping the community.

"... leaving her with a painful mark on her finger."

240 hours of community service is meant to explain to the moron that it could have just as easily been an eye that got hit. The lack of cash flow towards the woman acknowledges that nothing really happened to her. Good job judge.

Pregnancy mentioned because this is otherwise a lame article for the Edinburgh Evening News, especially as the headline implies shot with a real gun. Still looks lame, but will get the necessary watchers to keep the ratings high.

You're not really sure what an AirSoft gun's purpose is, are you?

2007-03-16 03:14:07 PM
Although, the article never once said "AirSoft", so I'm suing subby for malicious misinformation in a headline resulting in an unwarranted snarky post. I think $13 million should about cover it.

Pellet guns can pop holes in metal signs easily if you pump them enough. I have a .22 pellet rifle.

Airsoft rifles shoot plastic pellets. The one my son had was battery operated. Really doesn't hurt.

That said, the little twerp should have his ass kicked firing it at people/cars and lose the privelegde of having one at all until he can grow some sense.

Its an airsoft gun, most of them don't even hurt
240 hours is plenty punishment

wmoonfox : Did I miss some important bit in high school about the human hand's reproductive capabilities?

While not technically able to reproduce in itself, the hand is an important part of the the reproductive system! As in: "If you can't find anyone to reproduce with, you better get to know your hand."

The brits are trying to ban airsoft guns, thats probably why the article is focusing on that. Probably why there was even a story here.

Time to apply some logic here - this could easily have been a fatal situation if she'd been driving, or could have caused more injury if she'd been unlucky enough to have the window down.
Therefore the guy should have been charged with attempted murder of 1.5 (I don't want to piss off pro-life or pro-choice here, so compromise works, right?). The fact that he was just trying to have some fun without hurting anyone doesn't matter, the intention is irrelevant.

mister aj Time to apply some logic here - this could easily have been a fatal situation if she'd been driving, or could have caused more injury if she'd been unlucky enough to have the window down.

Her window was down. The guy was firing a cheap pellet gun, not a friggin rifle fer crissakes. Yeah, if he had hit her in the eye while she was driving and she swerved, causing an accident, it could have been fatal... but it left a bruise.

I mean, if you want to start charging people for attempted murder for being stupid with a pellet gun, you need to start doing the same to cops with their "less than lethal" weapons -- those things transfer the same, if not more energy into the target. Thus, they are just as lethal.

Yep. Police officers exercising their duty is certainly comparable to random yobs firing pellet guns at random vehicles and pedestrians. Intent/purpose, training, everything is exactly the same.

/police officers that misuse non-lethal weapons ARE punished

Oh snap! And I was making a direct comparison! How silly of me!

Actually, if you don't just read whatever you want to out of my post, it's pointing out that a pellet gun is no more dangerous than the "less than lethal" weapons our police use. I.e.: if you can be tried for attempted murder for using one, then they shouldn't be used in situations that do not call for lethal force.

Good try, though...

So he shot her with a firearm?

I just want to know what Stern said to her.

Does he like pregnant-women boobies? I bet he does.

Airsoft toys are toys; not firearms, pellet guns, or BB guns.

Pellet guns fire lead pellets, quite fast. The lead pellets
are often designed (shaped) to kill nuisance animals.

BB guns fire steel "BB" caliber balls. They can break the skin surface, and cause a wound fairly easily.

Airsoft toy firearm replicas fire quite large, light plastic balls and are intended to be USED to shoot other people in "Paintball-style" matches.

Neither pellet nor BB airguns are designed or intended to be used to "shoot" other humans in a game setting.

If UK lawmakers are looking to ban Airsoft toy firearm replicas, it is PROBABLY because the well-made toys look exactly like their real counterparts, and ** scare easily-scared people **.
