I never paid attention to how much top 40 singers sucked until I was trained on what to listen for by the three judges. "way off key!" "You were all over the place!" "Very pitchy". There are only a few singers on the radio that I would say have talent.
The majority "made it" because they have a unique sound or a few catchy songs.

One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity. Yeah.

I stopped listening to the radio when even the classic rock stations stopped playing Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

I have never heard an American Idol person on the radio. Never. But like a couple of people above I only listen to Classic Rock stations, some of which do occasionally play newer stuff like STP, Pearl Jam, U2, and Nirvana.

I find it somewhat telling that the #1 Song Leader spot on that American Idol chart is "Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson.. A throw-away song that was handed to her by Avril Lavigne that Kelly had absolutely no part in writing.

Combat Medici Yeah. And they got it completely right 27 year ago. And we still haven't learned. At least we've got that one Idol chick's nudie pics.

A good singing voice does not make you worth listening to. Take piano lessons or something. If your that passionate about making music (as opposed to pre-scripted, formulaic noise with a back-beat), then put more effort into *that* rather than your image.

Otherwise, you are a whore. Whore whore whore whore. Every last damn one of you.

A real music god isn't playing for an audience (necessarily). The crowd is just there for the priviledge of watching as he/she makes love to their instrament.

Speaking as a non-American, I can tell you the ONLY Am-Idol contestant that has broken through overseas is Kelly Clarkson. The others, if they even get a release, don't sell at all.

What is the purpose of music???

My answer is that it is to convey an emotion.

A twelve year old girl is not going to be attracted the the same emotions some 30 or 40 year old guy is (who is stuck in the music of his youth very often). Sadly this group is the loudest and most pretentious of all music fans.
Sure you can argue complexity or arrangement but those don't necessarily convey more complex feelings.

I love Chopin piano concertos and they convey far more meaning and complexity than classic rock but it doesn't mean I will complain about how simple and stupid your music is. Or the corporate nature of all rock songs even the indie labels.

My point is music is meant to convey an emotion and not everybody relates to music like you do.

One persons Chopin can be another persons Justin Timberlake.

It all goes with different levels of maturity and my Chopin is way more mature than your classic rock.

So is there any current band analogous to King Crimson, XTC, Genesis (70's version) or other experimental and creative artists? The last good thing I've found has been Tree Wave. I'm sick of template-created pop music drivel. (I was going to say "A.I. generated music", then remembered the initials of American Idol.)

At least I found out why that piece of crap show is still on the air...Americans love their insipid pap, and it apparently makes Clear Channel and the RIAA very happy.

There are plenty of talentless model-types out there for people to hate on... there's no need to talk crap about the talented singers (even if you disagree about the amount of talent, or don't prefer that kind of music).

It's hard to say what's the 70's version. With Phillips? With Gabriel? With Hackett? For much of the 70s, the band was just Collins, Rutherford, and Banks, and Trick of The Tail ain't too bad.

But I think I know what you mean. What you want to do it go to Progressive Rock on Wikipedia and you'll find all kinds of great bands, many of them deliberately carrying on that 70s tradition.
