HA! This is the sub music teacher that told my son he was "horrible" on the violin (he's been playing for a few months. I complained to the school, as did several other parents, and was assured she would never sub in my son's school again.

Yeah, it would be much better if the teachers keep lying to your kid. Then the kids won't feel bad and have to learn to deal with those feelings. It's much better to insulate them for life. Especially with boys.

In fact, teachers should never tell kids the truth. The parents can't handle it.

As often with the case of Fark, the second part of the headline, or the punchline part if you will, is never meant to be taken seriously.

But yeah, you're right. It would have been much funnier if it were true.

Good point. Because as we all know, there is absolutely no middle ground between lying about a kid's talents and telling him he is flat-out "horrible". Tact is for ninnies.

Yeah, you're right. Once he gets out into the real world, he'll be dealing ONLY with tactful people.

/don't mean to be a snot about it. I just think a few more kids should be told they're horrible and learn how to deal with it rather than have mommy/daddy come and fix it for them.

//but, i must admit, i came close to beating up a 8-year old kid once because he was picking on my kid.

No beginning violin player sounds anything but horrible.
Believe me, I know.

Skinny-lil-b's posts in this thread reminds me of this exchange from A Fish Called Wanda.

"I'm sorry about Otto, Ken. He had a rough childhood. Dad used to beat him up."
"Good."

What do a violin and a lawsuit have in common?
Everyone is happy when the case is closed.

The original viola player joke page.

What do a SCUD missile and a viola player have in common?
They're both offensive and inaccurate.

At least they weren't having sex.

HAHA! Fingering.

How do you get a viola section to play spiccato?
Write a whole note with "solo" above it.

*blink*

Yeah, I bet those jokes KILL at venues other than orchestra camp...

So that means you have mastered every skill you have aquired throughout your life in less than two months? If so, why are you wasting your precious time on fark, shouldn't you be saving the planet or fixing world hunger Mr. Genius?

Did the kid have "stupid fingers"?

Sooo...I'm confused. Where did the whacking come in? TFA doesn't give a clear timeline of events. That being said...

Teachers should be honest with students, but no child, unless they're some kind of savant, is going to be all that great at playing a musical instrument right away. No one would. Methinks Mrs. Grumpy is getting too old and crotchety to teach anymore.

I play the viola and i am really getting a kick out of these comments.

more kids need to be whacked on the head, and start at a young age.

2007-03-09 04:07:58 PM
my elementary school music teacher actually threw things at students when they screwed up badly. chalkboard brushes, rubber mutes, paper towel rolls. i remember when he pelted the smelly tuba player right in the face with a kleenex box. good times.

he also frequently picked his butt in front of class. i think he eventually got fired for sexual harassment or something.

Amen to that

When I was younger and doing the music thing (see Marching Band) we used to get hit with drumsticks. The instructor was nice enough to put an arch on it, though.

I'll see your beginning violin student, and raise you a beginning bagpipe player.

IF YOU DARE!!!

I'm not sure what the piano equivalent of a bow for a viola is. I think it would be a little light weight wooden assembly with a felt striker on the end...not that scary.

2007-03-09 04:12:22 PM
give me doughnuts: I'll see your beginning violin student, and raise you a beginning bagpipe player.

You win the thread.

If you're too much of a pussy to take someone saying you suck at an instrument, you might as well just hang it up now and go back to playing video games. You'll never really be good under a delusion that you're already good.

2007-03-09 04:12:43 PM
At the end of the article it says that she may face child abuse charges, then it says that she's free on $1,000 bond. If she's free on bond doesn't that mean she's already been charged?

/seriously curious about this
//knows nothing about criminal court

---- to answer to this, as a musician, some people should be told they are no good so they don't waste their life trying to be a musician! having gone through conservatory and seen so many people who I knew would never continue I always felt bad that the teacher never suggested they do something else. And then tehy actually get made that it was never suggested that they suck!!!

It's better with "pianissimo tremolo."

Anyone who thinks a kid is a horrible violin player after two months of lessons doesn't know anything about musical instruments. Well, unless the kid kept getting the bow stuck between the strings or somehow got it stuck in his mouth.

Bloginspanken: If you're too much of a pussy to take someone saying you suck at an instrument, you might as well just hang it up now and go back to playing video games. You'll never really be good under a delusion that you're already good.

It just seems stupid to me. Why would you tell someone they are bad at playing an instrument when you're a teacher? Isn't that why they're taking lessons in the first place?

Physical and mental pain is part of any effective music-learning experience. I guess I wasn't aware of just how well-kept the secret was.

In my experience, the best way to avoid getting hit with your own instrument is to stop sucking at it. The best way to avoid being called a "horrible player" is to practice until you're less horrible.

/Never been hit by a violin bow, but I had drumsticks and new-to-me compound swear words hurled at me during lessons. Many times.

THAT PLAY INSTRUMENTS!

/okay sorry I forgot to add that part to the last part, really, I'm done now.
