No justice.

Jimbo still runs the show, and no policy changes expected to address all the empire-building frauds who have lodged themselves in the cortex of Wikipedia like a virus that never goes away.

2007-03-06 12:37:36 PM
What is this Wikipedia you talk of?

2007-03-06 12:38:12 PM
Someone on the Internet lied about themselves? Wow.

2007-03-06 12:38:18 PM
Wikipedia can DIAF.

How can you trust an "informational" website that everyone and their dog can edit?

Who knows what's true, and what's fiction?

2007-03-06 12:38:45 PM
Except that Jimbo knew about it for something like two months before the whole lying bit actually went public.

2007-03-06 12:39:08 PM
Jesus, that was the longest, dullest article ever. Who cares?

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Anyone had any experience with this Essjay guy, did he really beat people over the head with his "PhD" to get them to submit to his decisions?

2007-03-06 12:43:29 PM
You can trust me, baby. I'm a Doctor of Love with expertise in Smooth Moves.

2007-03-06 12:44:22 PM
Anyone who calls themselves Jimbo cannot be trusted.

2007-03-06 12:45:53 PM
There's even a Wikipedia article on this here. I love Wikipedia.

2007-03-06 12:45:59 PM
Holy crap, wikipedia is just like myspace...who would have thought!

Your tinfoil hat is loose.

You obviously have no experience editing at Wikipedia. If you did, you'd have encountered "editors" who think they own articles which they defend with every tactic in the book, including false credentials.

2007-03-06 12:46:20 PM
As a senior resident of Farktology and respected member of the community, I am outraged at the claims of false PhDs.

Submitter is thanked for posting this in general...

but -10 for not working either the [IRONIC] tag or the [OBVIOUS] tag in here! (It would depend on submitter's level of cynicism.)

There's even a Wikipedia article on the criticism of Wikipedia here:

oh. jimbo wales.... nevermind.

But I get all my information from Wikipedia! These allegations must be false!

I'd sooner burn my 3 Ph.D.s in public than allow anyone to villify anything to do with Wikipedia!

/Is there going to be a run on the "Fraud" entry on Wikipedia?

2007-03-06 12:51:38 PM
Luckily Conservapedia will never have these problems.

2007-03-06 12:51:59 PM
Wikipedia jumped the shark the moment it decided that it must be a serious encyclopedia, handling every single issue in a way that only a serious encyclopedia would. The Notability standard is the perfect exemplar of this sillyness.

Huh? Cite sources please, or don't complain.

The only thing you can trust for sure is information on the internet. If Wikipedia, or Fark, or any other site contained misinformation they could be sued for big $$$ for committing mind-rape. It is in their financial interest to ensure that they approach 100% in the truthiness area, and that they do.

2007-03-06 12:53:05 PM
Someone should have just slapped his page with:
{{cleanup-date|March 2007}}
{{OR}}

That would have showed him!

Constipedia?

oh. I need to get my eyes checked.

2007-03-06 12:54:41 PM
I think the guy just got caught up in the world of Wikipedia. After all, a site that allows you to edit an encylopedia must screw with your mind after some time. Perhaps he thought whatever he wrote became true! If he edited his profile to say he was a professor, then he would be one!

Wikipedia must be stopped!

2007-03-06 12:55:25 PM
Thanks, Essjay. You have provided a new ray of hope to dozens, nay, hundreds, of underemployed farkers.

Dr. Cornponebread, specialist in online ob/gyn, is IN! Please submit photos for prompt diagnosis...

There are some assholes on Wikipedia != there is a massive asshole conspiracy on Wikipedia.

When I am a tenured professor with chairs in computer science and mathematics, I will create an alternate encyclopedia that can verify itself.

Of course, this will only be limited to the maths and the sciences and a few other disciplines.

Anyone have a tenure track position?

2007-03-06 12:56:33 PM
The only thing you can trust for sure is information on the internet.

I kind of agree with that.

Oh, Brave Mr. Jordan. Look at the courage, look at the grace. He's like the Brady Quinn of nerd fraud.

Pxtl

The Notability standard is the perfect exemplar of this sillyness.

What notability standard? Whatever the requirements for having an article on Wikipieda are "notability" is not one of them.

2007-03-06 12:57:50 PM
control_this which they defend with every tactic in the book, including false credentials

spend enough time here, and you will probably find out their Fark account names.

That is an interesting proposition........

One of the nastier fighting points of Wikipedia:
The Notability Criterion.

Besides being committed to articles being truthful, neutral, well-referenced, and respectful, Wiki also has a requirement that articles only discuss subjects that are "Notable". This is, quite obviously, a stickling point for fandom, hobby-projects, webcomics, columnists, authors, and just about every other project of lesser reknown that would like to be included in the Wiki.

Libby fries and Essjay walks? What kind of kooky mixed-up world is this???

2007-03-06 01:00:45 PM
I think it's high time Gene Ray was made the emperor of Wikipedia.

2007-03-06 01:02:03 PM
"In a discussion over the editing of the article with regard to the term "imprimatur," as used in Catholicism, Essjay defended his use of the book "Catholicism for Dummies," saying, "This is a text I often require for my students, and I would hang my own Ph.D. on it's credibility.""

Ph.D. and can't tell when to use "its" and when to use "it's?"

Okay, right. Kentucky moron. And to everyone who let that one get by.

PXTL: "Wikipedia jumped the shark the moment it decided that it must be a serious encyclopedia, handling every single issue in a way that only a serious encyclopedia would"

Have you noticed that Wikipedia covers the "jumping the shark" metaphor without actually mentioning the Happy Days episode where Fonzie actually JUMPS the Shark, hence the birth of the cliché

Libby fries and Essjay walks? What kind of kooky mixed-up world is this???

Drew!

I didn't realize you led a triple life! My God, do you realize the implications of this?! You are going to be documented in Wikipedia forever!

2007-03-06 01:05:06 PM
Good Idea: Creating a pseudonym to protect your identity.

Bad Idea: Creating a pseudonym with false credentials that can be used to artificially bolster your opinions and alter the truthiness of articles to "protect your identity".
