stellar_wench: the only editor i don't like is emacs, simply because i find the buffer concept completely annoying. it's a personal preference. no one choice is better than the other.

I personally like the native editors from the different desktops since they tend to just give the syntactic coloring. Emacs has some nice features with the regional highlighting. I too wish the would make the buffer system less transparent though that is a hold over from the old *nix days.

Props to the .NET devs here. I've worked in C, C++, VB, VBA, Java, J2EE, Perl, ASP, PHP, Delphi (Pascal) with VCL, and even a little bit of Ruby, but the reigning champ in terms of function and power is C# and .NET. There's something to said for standards, no matter who controls them.

But, I still have to give a nod to the open source community: if it weren't for that pack of elitist ravenous douchebags, nothing would keep Microsoft in check.

/Yin and Yang.
//Now, if only Novell would get off thier assess and properly support Mono with libs for KDE....

Couldn't you just have a random character string generator output to perl and just keep repeating that until it produced a viable OS?

It'd be the first Darwinian OS ever written.

sorry, Bevets said the Bible says it cant be done. God must provide the OS as is.

One could easily argue that Perl creates third class programmers by letting people be sloppy with it's fail-soft semantics. In other languages, their programs would be still-born and they would have to learn to do things the right way.

And Perl is a horrible language. The coercion for "0" versus any other non-zero string in a boolean context is a shocking travesty. I have found code like the following:

if ($string) {
doSomething();
} else {
doSomethingElse();
}

... in nearly every Perl program I've looked at. It always means that the programmer is testing $string for zero length, but Perl takes the false branch on the string "0" as well. And that's just the beginning. Every time Perl makes a lossy coercion of any sort, it's usually a subtle bug.

Broken broken broken.

first off if your programs don't compile into machine CODE you are not a coder

JAVA is a scam by sun to help sell a new CPU that they canceled, if you use JAVA for anything other than installers or web applications, either you have morans for bosses and my sympathy or you are the moran.

JAVA is not compiled code, byte code is simply a translation to a common language that the interpreter (JAVA VIRTUAL MACHINE) can understand... so why didn't they make the java virtual machine read JAVA code? because it was a scam to sell Sun's byte code reading CPU which was a similar project to the article the thread references

Scripts are to Compiled code as a peddle cart is to a porche.

The best tool for web building is notepad and each browser you intend to support... and if you design a web page for a certain resolution or the welcome page takes more than 3 seconds to load on 56k see my thoughts on JAVA

Code reuse is good... if you actually have the code... 3rd party componets are crap, and support when you find a bug in their componet is nonexistant. you will save time building a library of your own componets.

no one cares about efficient code anymore, it's all about getting the beta out there.

/ learned in following order
//GWBasic, QBasic, VB Macros, Java, Perl, C++, VB, x086 Machine code, Motorola 6800 code, Assembler, Cobol, JScript, VBScript, Python, ASP, VB.Net, C#.Net
/// yes I program in scripts sometimes, but if it's not compiled it better not be doing anything complex

I wrote an OS for under $3000.

So I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies.

Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about.

But trust me.... You don't.

I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you dont know what you are talking about.

This is how bad info gets passed around.

If you dont know about the topic....Dont make yourself sound like you do.

Cuz some Farkers belive anything they hear.

huh? what year was lines of code based on productivity of a programmer? with modern OOP languages that's a mute stat compared with scalable design patterns which modern IDEs really help in terms of refactoring code to meet the needs of agile methodologies.

You are a manager right? There is no way a sane programmer would spout this drivel.

Could be pretty simple actually.

Use Linux as a base for a very small OS wherein all it does upon bootup is tell ACPI to turn the system off.

It's completely functional, has all the functionality of Windows ME (which is good enough), is unhackable, and won't destroy your files.

/would like his $3000 in consulting fees now, assuming nobody has come up with this idea yet. ;)

you could assemble the M16 and masturbate before the tiger got in. of course, without a magazine with rounds, you're probably still farked.

Actually, I knew some UNIX guys who could type in VI faster than most people could in Word. Of course, if they were working in Windows and their task bar disappeared, they would freak.

There is a guy that works for one of the vendors at the client site I am at that is like that. I was wondering why he was typing so much to do so little stuff on the screen and then he let me type. I went from 60 to retard in about 3 seconds.

I had him write little scripts for me to handle the main functionality of the legacy app I was writing integration code against so I didn't have to remember all the weird Unix schtuff.

Problem solved... :-)

"Someone should just point this guy to ReactOS, if this is for reals. Just invest in a project that's already going. Yeah, probably NOT unhackable, but open code peer review COULD lead to quicker fixes, etc a la Linux."

React is in alpha now, but looks pretty good on the shelf. It's not installable on an ATA based system, tho.

I'll pay 3000 and one dollars for someone to code a new O/S for me. It has to be compatible with Windows Vista, the new Mac os, Linux, and OS/2. I'm gonna sell it, and call it 'pie in the sky o/s'. Yeah, that's the ticket.

I agree with using a simple text editor for writing HTML and Javascript, but having some sort of IDE for initial table layout really saves a lot of time. An old copy of Frontpage will save time even with me having to remove the lame non-standard tags it tends to put in.

You are a manager right? There is no way a sane programmer would spout this drivel.

you are kidding right? judging a programmer by lines of code is spew of an ignorant CIO or IT PMO.

maybe in 1972 with old procedural languages and employing no test driven development techniques this might be valid.

but an ignorant manager is more likely to spew something like "you will be judged on lines of code written" than a good software architect.

Linux was meant to be downloaded and used for free despite all of the time and effort its contributors put into it. So why does this guy's budget sound all that laughable? I'm sure most of you laughed at Linus Torvolds when he said he would create a free alternative to proprietary operating systems and then give it away for nothing.

After skimming through the posts, I just wanted to say that JTorres176 has displayed how much of a douchebag he is. Making fun of someone else for not being as l337 of a nerd coder is just sad.

I remember the first time I added him to my douchebag list was when he made some ridiculously stupid comment about marijuana making someone aggressive and angry. Moran.

I'm not sure what the "lines of code per day" stats are now, but I do know my most productive days as a developer have been marked by the number of lines of code I've gotten rid of, because a proper redesign or refactor had made them redundant.

If I found myself working for a manager who counted lines of code, I'd

"*sigh* I love .NET, but I really wish MS would make it work right on all browsers..."

.NET doesn't have much to do with what you see on the browser. At least if the .NET developer is any good, he/she will write brower independent code.

If you let the .NET aspx web controls write all your HTML for you, then yeah, it's not pretty. I would hope that professionals working on a public site would do the right thing though.
