Teesri Aankh, the reason pig meat was banned in a lot of religions is that it carries a disease that kills people if the meat is not cooked properly. People in ancient Israel interpreted the deaths of people who ate pigs as divine retribution for being bad. Then eating pork got banned, because that was presumed to be the bad thing. A lot of the muslim rules are similar to the Jewih ones, including the ban on pig meat.

Valarius:I don't know. Ask a Muslim why eating pork is forbidden. Or ask Tatsuma why he has a list of kosher stuff to chow on.

Yes, but religion aside, there seems to be a list of animals that are okay, and some that are not -- for no apparent reason. Ever seen dog or cat on the menu? Or why not horse, for that matter? They're no more or less edible than cow or pig.

Because dogs and cats are pets, and nobody wants to think about eating fluffy. It's the same reason that farmers try to keep their kids from naming the livestock.

Horse is illegal to serve in many states, by the way. So are dog and cat, for that matter.

I don't question the legality -- I'm sure you're right -- my point is that there's no objective reason for it.

I submitted this with a headline relating to Scots of the MacDonald clan being upset over being banned. I guess this one made more sense.
It certainly got the discussion going in the right direction..
And now, a Scotsman or a horse.

I've eaten cow, pig, chicken, turkey, goose, duck, partridge, squirrel, deer, m00se, alligator, fish, ostrich, snake, sheep, and buckets of invertebrate sea creatures. No horse though. I could be convinced.

I like McDonalds. I eat it almost every day. I'm not fat. No diabetes. No high cholesterol.

Whatever you eat, the human body can usually adapt -- you just have to make sure you burn the same amount of calories that you take in.

That's my philosophy anyway.

Mercilessly beating a dead cliche is just fine, as long as it has something remotely to do with tfa, which this doesn't.

But poorer people eat it because it's cheap and calorically dense, nevermind how low in nutritive value McD's food is.

Banning McDonalds would be like discriminating against the poor.

Must be nice to member of royalty with a butler who cooks all your meals on the peoples' nickel. Sorry but even that's an ad hominem, prohibition never works. He should have just said 'McDonald's food is BAD FOR YOU, dear subjects.'
