And down we go for the predicted soft landing.

Just a slight correction to the markets, then off we go again

That stoked memories of the Asian financial crisis in the late '90s, Flynn said. But traders later "realized that the fears were probably a little overdone."

Yeah, right. Because everyone knows that the Chinese markets are being run in a sensible manner suddenly.

Give it through the rest of this week. Then dump everything you can into index funds.

Submitter understands the insanity of the stock market very well.

I have a layman's knowledge of the market -- meaning just enough to know not to get involved with it. (My last venture, in the 80s, had me buying stock cheaply which was a sure thing to split and double my investment. However, someone later exposed the fact that the company was involved in some major lawsuits. My stock soared -- and then dropped. By the time I dumped it, I'd lost money.)

I used to blame the oil companies and producers solely for the high fuel prices, until I discovered that our own investors were helping raise the costs. Basically, anyone heavily invested in oil futures -- especially major banks -- stand to loose money if the stock prices fall due to reduced barrel costs. Naturally, the major investors will work hard to keep the stock prices high.

Joe and Josephine Yuppie, owning $25,000 worth of oil stock, will not be happy if the stuff drops a point. Yet they'll gripe and complain about the pump prices and power bills they get -- which they're actually helping keep high.

Supply & Demand? Nope, oil prices are set by speculators and NYSE. Actually, that's not right either, its whatever way the wind is blowing and explanations by big oil that make no sense.

Recovered 150 points in 10 minutes. Not bad.

I don't think its going to get much better today but it will be interesting to see if the Chinese market continues to slide tonight and what the reaction of the rest of the world markets would be to that.

Sorry no HTML

You can see this correction coming a mile away. NYT did a story about how a lot of people in china are putting their money into stocks because it is the easy way to make money. Classic sign of a bubble.

Yeah, my tip off was when the Chinese official said, "There's a bubble going on. People should be concerned about the risks" and then "up to 70 percent of the companies on Chinese exchanges are worthless and should be delisted." Can you imagine the Fed Chairman saying something like that? There'd be anarchy in the streets.

Though this may not be it, it's probably better sooner than later. All these luck happy Chinese celebrating the lucky year of the luckiest pig probably aren't going to get any more rational this year.
