Actually, it would be the spelling Nazis. Not that I am one, but it's "grammar".

The Iowa Dept of Revenue = Nazis

Jerks tried to tax income I earned two states away.

These are the same farkers that go to flea markets and put sales tax forms on all the tables, expecting people to collect a sales tax from each sale.

I hope they all DIAF. Soon.

FTA: "Ameila Hamilton-Morris, a city spokeswoman, said people who owe $50 or more could have their state refunds frozen for 15 days so they can pay their fines. If they don't the amount owed will be deducted from the refund before the check is issued, she said."

Just 15 days? Thank you, O Benevolent one.....I'm thinking just deduct it and forget it. Especially if the largest reported amount is $705. That's assuming they get a state income tax refund. Let them bury themselves in the paperwork if they want to push that legislation through.

mikesuds, and that's why Manifest Destiny kept moving people west. Old England still has it's grips on the eastern US apparently when it comes to overbearing beauracracy.

The "Wild West" would like to keep it that way. I'm inclined to agree with them. Even if the socialites of LA and SF drive me nuts.

Especially since you can count on one thing around here (Des Moines, that is). When it's an issue that makes the City or State money, it always passes. Even our school board is corrupt as hell. It's so weird, seeing graft in a tiny little craphole like this.

This happened to me in Mpls-- some parking ticket scofflaw that had the same first and last name-- completely different middle name and SS number. I had to spend a day at the govt. center straightening it all out, since my refund was garnished.

I didn't even receive an apology. I hate public employees.

I can see your frustration. Why should the article referenced not contradict the intent of the headline?

Old England still has it's grips on the eastern US.....?

Now it's time for the geography police. Do you even know where Des Moines is at? It certainly ain't in the east.

They'll probably spend $750k - $1 million in this tax refund grab to recover $450k.

They should do what other states and municipalities do, refuse to issue licenses and registrations (business, driver, vehicle, etc) to anyone with outstanding tickets.

2007-02-25 07:50:54 AM
Up here in Alberta they don't do that. You simply can't renew your license or your vehicle registration, or get new of either, before you pay your fines.

2007-02-25 08:10:05 AM
It's called "conversion" and you can sue Idaho in federal court for it.

CletusBentwick: It's called "conversion" and you can sue Idaho in federal court for it.

Well, at least that course of action is more productive than blaming Canada.

/Idaho?

2007-02-25 08:33:22 AM
That's nothing. In Arlington Co., VA, some of the cars that the parking enforcement people cruise around in have cameras that scan the license plates of cars as they go along. The camera video is instantly "looked at" by a computer that cross references the vehicle registration info with tax records, unpaid fines, & any court ordered payment. If your on their list, your car is booted immediately. If it's not paid within certain amount of time, it's impounded & put up for auction.

mikesuds: I had a parking ticket that was a couple months late here in PA... a constable showed up at my house last week with a warrant for my arrest.

Wow, that's pretty hardcore. They just won't renew your license and registration when they come up if you have outstanding tickets here in MA. They'll boot you too if you rack up 10 or so but that's something else again.

Then again. I live in Somerville/Cambridge where you can't help but get at least 6 tickets in a year if you're lucky. They're like ninjas with those things.

ZOMFG!!1111 You didn't get your tax refund because you didn't pay your traffic tickets!!!!111oneone Da Man's assraping j00!!!1111

Bah! It could be worse:

-> No car registration renewal for you.

-> A warrant for your arrest.

-> The State Taxman deducting them from your refund.

And the best one of them all:

-> The Police Department taking a cue from libraries and contracting a Collections Agency to collect the monies.

/STFU and pay your tickets

Cities are getting increasingly desperate for revenue. I find that odd since in most places property values have shot upwards so overall revenue should have increased too.

But school systems being what they are, will continue to eat more and more of the revenue pie.

Providence, RI is about to contract vehicle booting out to a company called Paylock. And they're changing the rules for booting to two tickets, not the five currently on the books.

But paylock's boot uses a 3 digit code to unlock. How long do you think it'll be before they get hacked?

3 digit code? There's only a thousand possibilities, you could work through that in a few hours.

I blame Bush and Clinton. This is just the kind of thuggery we've all come to expect out of government since our federal government started setting the example.

I keep holding out hope that one day people are going to snap out of it and realize that our government is SUPPOSED to SERVE us, not the other way around...

I've actually spent time in jail (a long time ago) due to an unpaid illegal left-turn ticket.

Roomie: Whatcha in fer?
Me: Unpaid ticket. You?
Roomie: I killed a guy with my bare hands.
Me: I see.

/Not really
//Did spend time (couple hours) in jail for unpaid ticket, though

As an Iowan and parking scofflaw, I disapprove. OF course, the vast majority of my income was untaxed last year, so they'll just have to wait until I'm good and ready to cough up for my tickets.

/I wouldn't have put my car there
//if there were anywhere else to put my car

How can a city sieze a state income tax refund? What if you have tickets in multiple cities?

2007-02-26 02:36:12 AM

The proposal before the city council can be found here.

Since I will be down there for the meeting, speaking against another proposal (using tax money to set aside space in city parking ramps for smokers who cannot smoke on their employer's property), I just might speak in favor of this one.

/already helped drive one city councilman from office
//civic involvement can be so much fun
