Either died or in jail for non-related offenses.

Bonus tidbit: the 3 times Ted Bundy was nabbed, they were all traffic offenses.

I remember growing up in the Bay Area, we had the Zodiac Killer, the Patty Hearst kidnapping, and the persecution of the Black Panthers.

Good Times...

karendotcom: persecution of the Black Panthers

You really want to go with persecution? Didn't they do some stuff that warranted at least some of their harassment by the police, such as killing a couple of cops (some of whom were black) in a few cities and walking around heavily armed?

I remember my Mom telling me horror stories about before they caught Bundy. I think it's kind of funny that I ended up spending me teenage years living next to the Green River, and biking/roller blading along the pedestrian trail down there.

Serial killer fears add a special spice to a childhood that you just can't get with regular whackos.

/honestly, Bundy scares the bejeesus out of me, even if he is dead now
//will probably see the movie with the bf

They oughta announce zodiac is being given a star on the walk of fame and nab him/her when he/she shows up

zerkalo

They could tell him he won $500 in a drawing, and that he could pick it up at the local police department.

It's worked before.

Like we need any more Zodiac movies. They're getting to be like the Christopher Columbus movies of the early 90's.

I still live in Vallejo, and the whole story (as karendotcom could attest to) permeates through the local culture. You can crack a comment about "by knife, by fire, by gun, by rope" or "slaves in the afterlife and feeding them salted pork" and everybody instantly knows what you're talking about. It's creepy, but at the same time it's insanely fascinating... like looking at betty lou jensen's grave.

A band from the SF Bay Area was also called the Zodiac Killers [ruba1.com].

Hmmm ... TFA cites tremendous attention-to-detail on the part of the film-makers, yet cites an example of a "VW Rabbit" being driven by the investigators for the 1968-1969 slayings. If memory serves, VW didn't release the Rabbit until 10 years later.

Redacted.com made a good case for Ted Kazcynski being the Zodiac Killer.

I remember when Zodiac was getting his freak on when I was a kid. Although my family lived in Long Beach, we were scared shiatless.
As for Bundy, my brother worked with him on the suicide hotline in San Diego. They were friends.

Zodiac and DB Cooper, two unsolved cases that have become almost folklore. Both possibly dead by now, though they could still be alive. And Zodiac could be right under everyone's nose. Sometimes the hardest people to catch are the obvious ones. And my armchair gut feeling hunch is the Zodiac was a military crypto-analyst. Would explain the knowledge of codes.

I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN IT IS MORE FUN THAN KILLING WILD GAME IN THE FORREST BECAUSE MAN IS THE MOST DANGEROUS ANAMAL OF ALL TO KILL SOMETHING GIVES ME THE MOST THRILLING EXPERENCE IT IS EVEN BETTER THAN GETTING YOUR ROCKS OFF WITH A GIRL THE BEST PART OF IT IS THAT WHEN I DIE I WILL BE REBORN IN PARADICE AND ALL THE I HAVE KILLED WILL BECOME MY SLAVES I WILL NOT GIVE YOU MY NAME BECAUSE YOU WILL TRY TO SLOI DOWN OR STOP MY COLLECTING OF SLAVES FOR MY AFTERLIFE EBEORIETEMETHHPITI

Anybody else watch "America's Most Wanted" last night? The entire show was about the Zodiac and the movie was mentioned and plugged several times. What I wanna know is- Did Sumner Redstone catch Rupert Murdoch with a tranny prostitute or what?

I did watch America's Most Wanted last night. It was like a big advertisement for the movie. I figured that the movie was a 20th Century Fox production...then got on Fark this morning and find out it's a Paramount production. Weird.

I saw a special on the Zodiac Killer. One expert is convinced that the guy is still alive and living as a college professor in the Bay Area. He won't name the guy for fear of lawsuits but his evidence was fascinating to say the least.
Zodiac, who ever he was was a very intelligent guy. Far more intelligent than most people.

All I want to know is how he keeps getting my horoscope so wrong.

And I kid you not, one day I read my horoscope and it said stay away from all power sources and/or power lines. It was pretty emphatic about it. Strangest prediction ever.

Huh sounds like Hollywood is running out of ideas. Wonder how long it will be before they make a movie about the Oklahoma City bombings...

It always makes me wonder how many killers are out there.

I truly believe the number to be vastly, vastly higher than anything most people would typically believe. Almost everytime I read about serial killers, I notice that often times, they really aren't that bright. I mean, some are of average intelligence but aside from a notable few (and I'm being giving here) there weren't any really /smart/ killers.

Thus it leads me to believe quite simply that the very intelligent killers simply get away with it way more often than people want to give credit for. Zodiac killer sounds like a fairly intelligent guy. He slipped up and got noticed at some point but he was at least smart enough to never be caught (to this date anyway).

/killing doesn't take intelligence, not getting caught does.
//guilt probably gives most people away be it conscious or sub.

I don't agree with your line of thought. Real serial killers are usually too compulsive and too risk-prone to last for all that long.

Also even if they don't get identified at least their crimes get identified as serial killings. It's extremely hard to make an extended series of serial murders look patternless, and anyway the killers would almost never want to do that. They usually want their killings to be acknowledged... it's an ego thing.

I do think in some situations serial killers stand a much better chance of going undetected. One is serial killers at war (I know there were psychopaths during the Vietnam war who deliberately murderer civilians under the 'fog of war'.

Another situation is wealthy people in third world countries. One case I recall is this guy in India (or maybe Pakistan) who raped and killed some ridiculous number of boys over the years... like 50 or something.

I was stationed at Mare Island for 3 years when I was in the Navy. Used to go to Pt. Reyes and Lake Berryessa all the time, sometimes just me and gf. Never heard about the Zodiac killer until after I moved away. Totally freaked me out, b/c we were in some of the exact places as his victims.

/still creeped out

I really couldn't care less about the subject matter. I'm just excited that a new David Fincher movie is coming out; it's been FAR too long. Though Panic Room was kind of lame.
