Jon Snow: God I hope this isn't true.

I'm surprised that so many people are saying this. Head over to MEMRI's video site and search under Iran.

This video is kinda tame compared to the rest of the crap they view on their regular home tv channels.

Ahh, I provoked the ire of TappingTheVein!

Good, it means I'm doing something right.

Must have been pointing out MEMRI's HIGHLY questionable "translation service," run by IDF Intelligence officer (1968-1988) Yigal Carmon, who has had lots of involvement with far-right Israeli politics since then. MEMRI has an agenda, and has been criticized heavily for it in the past.

See http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/comment/0,10551,884156,00.html
for an interesting email exchange between Memri's Carmon and Brian Whitaker of UK's newspaper, The Guardian. Interesting stuff.

But TappingTheVein, I suspect, is part of the Neocon movement to try and goad US public opinion into attacking Iran, despite the Neocon-conceived quagmire that Iraq has become. And since, for TappingTheVein (TTV), Israel's right-wingers (and their ability to continue Palestinian apartheid, land theft, violation of international law, etc.) are more important than the lives of US servicemen and servicewoman, as is the case with the classic Neocons, I have no doubt he'll take this post as another stick-in-the-eye.

Which thrills me to no end.

You're an ass, TappingTheVein. And the American public are not nearly the suckers they were prior to the Iraqi invasion, and are NOT going to buy the Neocon snake oil to invade Iran nearly as readily as the crap Memri pushed to get us into Iraq (with Yigal Carmon's spurious testimony to the US Congress as summarized in my link above discusses).

Let's see how you, TappingTheVein/MEMRI/Neocons, do in trying to get MORE US lives/taxpayer dollars flushed down the toilet in Iran for the sake of Israel avoiding its obligation to treat Palestinians fairly.

Is it really worth this much effort, that is goading the US into bloody conflict with Iraq AND Iran, just to keep from following Oslo?

Late to the thread, I know. I'm not even going to start on Beowolf's iranians are arabs bit. It seems like all of you recognized that for the BS it really is.

Ok translation check.

For the most part, this has been translated perfectly.

In some phrases, they used cruder terms. Ie: He at some point says, "And he bothers this poor cat" and they translated that as, "And he kicks this cat's ass"

Also I don't know if it comes through just reading the bottom, but they cut at a lot of points, many times mid sentence.

Still, this dude is an asshat, and deserves the scorn they imply he should deserve.

Boo this man.

Also it's funny, he's writing off Tom and Jerry as a jewish propaganda piece, but he urges people to watch Schinlers List as historical fact.

I'm not the one who cried 'obviously fake' without a shred of evidence. So really, stop projecting...if you're pissed off, it's because I was right.

Our very own persian farker verified this specific translation.
Obviously the pro-muslim/anti-israel crowd hates MEMRI.
The truth, like the topic of this thread, hurts.

But TappingTheVein, I suspect, is part of the Neocon movement to try and ..

Look, your original post was laughable enough as i proved above. Are you trying to break any stupidity records ?

How about addressing my points regarding your bullshiat from your original post ? as i recall you were amazed about muslims blaming crap on the Jewish Conspiracy and wondering if this guy's ideas are his alone.. as i said: laughable.

1967 borders. Internationalize or share Jerusalem. And be done with it, for Pete's sake.

It always amazes me that even when the people you defend openly contradict you (Hamas for example) and history itself contradicts you (palestinian terrorism before the occupation) you still don't let facts confuse you.

Tom was slang for the british and Jerry was slang for the germans at the time.

So to sum up, Fark's Persian-speaker confirms the Memri translation.
Everyone who wanted to assume that the text was made-up - simply on the basis that believing Iranians believe that shiate made them uncomfortable - was wrong. Not only wrong but demonstrably led around the nose by their own pre-conceptions and prejudices. Like this Iranian guy speaking.

I'm not surprised.
Memri has been translating unsettling stuff from Arabic (et alia) into English (et alia) for quite some time.
They do this full-time and do this well.
There's a need for this being done.

Arab gov'ts and spokespersons are VERY COMMONLY not saying the same stuff to the outside world that they say to their own people.

Case in point, the PLO spent over a YEAR claiming that their charter HAD been revised to aknowledge the legitimacy of Israel's existance (as per peace accords they agreed to) when it did no such thing. They got away with it in the Western press because many of those press-outlets that are not actively pro-Palistinian fall into the category of "useful idiots" who take press releases they LIKE as gospel & not requiring tiresome fact-checking.

Yawn, TappingTheVeinOfRawSewageAndSpoutingAGusher.

As usual, panicked and brazen insults from you constitute the height of your arguments.

Anyone can read the link I posted, and I'll post it here again, regarding MEMRI's extremely dubious methods, http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/comment/0,10551,884156,00.html , and MEMRI's role in deliberately misleading Congressional testimony designed to drag my country, the USA, into the Iraq war, simply for the Israeli right-wing pro-apartheid fascists. Like you. And we, the informed, ALL know that you guys have Iran in your sights next. Hence getting the war propaganda machine up and running to Iraqi levels at this point was quite predictable.

And that's all this is. That is, going to some ridiculous news conference given by God-knows-who, translating it with a pro-confrontational bias, which is MEMRI's historical modus operandi, being run by Israeli intelligence and all, and then holding that up as representative of, well, of ANYTHING of merit that justifies war.

Which, of course, it doesn't.

Really, TappingTheSewerLine, you should distance yourself from this ethnic-cleansing variety of Zionism/apartheid you seem willing to spill so much blood to support. It's not good for you.

Until the next "We-Need-To-Get-Iran" propaganda thread, which I'm sure will be soon if you're reading your AIPAC memos ...

Persepolis: Also, MEMRI isn't a news source, it's a watch dog group, so of course it's one sided.

Of course they are one sided, this was not the point. The point is the assload amount of material they carry, the kind of bullshiat arabs/muslims are exposed to on a daily basis.

This video is quite tame compared to the regular stuff.

One of my personal favorites is the Iranian version of Battlestar Galactica. I hope it comes out on DVD.

Oh I know, I'm not saying it's a bad thing. Indeed this tripe needs to be exposed and presented. But everyone is saying, "Hey it's made an IDF guy! It's biased"

Well no shiat. It's not a news source, it's a watchdog group. That's what they're there to do.

As much as I have seen, they don't mistranslate anything maliciously.

Though, (as I mentioned earlier), the cuts were a little weird to see, stopping someone in mid sentence. But the dude was saying crazy things to begin with, so I don't think it's really slander or anything.

But again, they have a purpose and the fill it.

Of course, they're not going to show stuff like this, this, or this (all should pop)

Thats not what it was established to do.

2007-02-25 06:45:22 PM
Okay, instead of "scary," why not the "asinine" or "dumb" tag? This guy's presentation was a load of bull5#!t.

1. Tom and Jerry cartoons were not presented by Disney.

2. Historical data indicate that Walt Disney harbored some anti-semitic perspectives himself, and it is thoroughly unlikely that he would have pursued a propagandistic endeavor of this type alone or in partnership with anyone else.

3. "Tom and Jerry" cartoons were not developed for European audiences to change anyone's perceptions of Jews or any other ethnic group. They were created for American entertainment. Period.

4. The creators of "Tom and Jerry" had no hidden agenda to indoctrinate anyone with these cartoons.

5. The presenter in this video acknowledges oppression against the Jews in Hitler's Germany, but also shrugs off their oppression as being over-hyped. Someone needs to shake some sense into this jerk that, first of all, he can't have it both ways--either you believe they were oppressed or they weren't. "Watch 'Schindler's List'," he says. But then he points out the yellow stars as truthful while calling the crematorium reports "propaganda." Only the most boneheaded knuckledraggers downplay or deny the holocaust. And even if you can make a valid argument that the oppression was exaggerated (which, again, only the greatest idiots in the world would try to make such a futile argument), there is no such thing as an exaggerated oppression. Oppression of any form is inexcusable and horrendous.

6. He calls the audience to look at history. They should. But he needs a refresher, too. The reason so many Jews took part in banking, jewelry stores and other such businesses actually stemmed from European anti-semitism. Jewish people were forbidden by law to own real estate. Hitler villified the Jews for being wealthy (a stereotype, however, as not all Jews were rich in the same way that not all Germans were poor), and he conveniently forgot that previously established laws restricted the sort of work Jews could engage in, as well as the types of belongings they could hold. If he wanted to villify anyone, he needed only to point fingers at himself and others like him who embraced a xenophobic perspective on the world. The presenter in the video clearly operates on the same sort of xenophobia.

7. If the presenter wanted to talk about racism in "Tom and Jerry" cartoons, he needed to look at the stereotypes about African Americans prevalent in the episodes, stereotypes as were common in American life in that (thankfully) bygone era.

This guy gets the golden crackpot award for his absolute stupidity, hair-brained conspiracy theories and inept grasp of history.

Persepolis: Of course, they're not going to show stuff like this, this, or this (all should pop)

I agree. But i also believe that 2 drunk kids and a settler woman spewing obscenities and such can't be compared to, for example, a video blaming the jews for 9/11, broadcasted on an official iranian tv channel.

Bonus points to the iranians for quoting the Protocls of the Elders of Zion (a proven forgery) as fact.

TappingTheVein: One of my personal favorites is the Iranian version of Battlestar Galactica. I hope it comes out on DVD.

I almost linked to that! The thing that the deniers in here seem not to realize is that this isn't just some random nutjob that somebody luckily caught on film. Stuff like this is shown on state television, regularly. It would be like having the KKK Theatre Hour on CBS every weeknight at 8PM, showing lynchings and eugenics proponents.

Word, I agree. I was just commenting on everyone who was saying, "Hey this is biased!" because they thought this was supposed to be a news source and not a watchdog group, which it is.

2007-02-25 10:47:09 PM

I speak Farsi and the translation is accurate.

The only discrepancies I could find were because of some Farsi colloquialisms and expressions. For example, he said, "Pedaresho dar miareh." Literally, this is an expression that means "he removes his [Tom's] father from his grave in order to show disrespect to his family," but is equivalent to the translation that they provided, "Jerry kicks his ass."

I think I should echo what I commented on the Youtube page and say that being both an Iranian and a Muslim, I want to condemn this idiocy. This guy is obviously intending to foment hatred and based on all of the arguments above, his logic is ridiculous and I think that it's self-evident. I'm embarassed that a countryman (well, half countryman as I have dual citizenship) of mine and a fellow member of my faith (I presume, at least... I'm taking a wild guess that he's not Christian or Bahai'i) would say such stupid things.

2007-02-25 10:53:53 PM

Sorry, I didn't see Persepolis' earlier post. Funny that we picked the same phrase to point out the slight differences in the translation.

In short, translation is accurate and the guy is an idiot.

Also, not really. Kicks his ass isn't a term you would use in front of kids. Pedaresho Daremeareh is.

Like I said, it's a cruder translation.

Still, the rest is spot on.

Muslims have their crazy Jewish conspiracy and the Christians have their crazy liberal/atheist conspiracy.
The two religions of peace sound more similair evey day.
