Why does The New York Times hate America?

2007-02-24 12:27:05 PM
He's been going in and out of style,
But he's guaranteed to raise a smile.
So may I introduce to you,
The act you've known for all these years...

Of course, this wasn't the first time the paper showed a soft spot in its heart for communist dictators. Back in the '30s, Walter Duranty served as an apologist for Joseph Stalin, knowingly filing false articles denying that Stalin's brutal collectiv ization policies had killed millions of Ukrainians through forced starvation.

Duranty never got a plaque or an award from Stalin - though he did win a Pulitzer Prize for his "reporting."

Remember - there is NO LEFT WING BIAS IN THE NEWS!

None at all. It's just not there. Reporters don't alter stories to suit their personal ideology, they just report 'the truth'.

"Actually, the Cuban plaque for Herbert Matthews is a reminder of the power of mainstream news organizations like the Times and their ability to influence history - not always for the better"

-- I like how the Post correctly doesn't characterize itself as a mainstream news organization.

If the people choose to believe what one writer for the New York Times wants them to believe, then more power to them.

No remotely sane person has ever said that there are no reporters with a left wing bias. There are biased people in the media just like everywhere else, and there always will be. We only run into a problem when conservatives start acting like that bias is universally sanctioned by the leadership of every media outlet in the country, and pretending that there are no reporters with a right-wing bias. Believe it or not, the Times does have conservative reporters, and the editorial staff does generally try to come as close to unbiased reporting as they can. They aren't perfect.

WIth regards to this story in particular, while supporting Castro was a mistake, he doesn't look nearly so bad if you compare him to the people in power in Cuba before him.

This coming from a guy who is taking an article from the New York Post at face value. NY Post is not the opposite of the NY Times, it's closer to the opposite of the Villiage Voice.

Mouth-breathing retards read the Post for anything more than sports (and comics if you ignore Mallard Fillmore)

2007-02-24 12:44:35 PM
So the Times is patting themselves on the back for a piece of farked up journalism that created one of the most brutal regimes of the 20th century.

/Congratulations Morans

"Timesman Herbert Matthews' 4,400-word article disproved government claims that the rebel leader was dead..... Alas, the story was a tissue of lies."

So he was dead??!!

I hate right wing newspapers

It isn't news....it's NY Post

So The Times is guilty of In-Fidel-ity?

2007-02-24 12:52:33 PM
Oh right, the US has never explicitly supported murderous dictators (pinochet, saddam, etc) which the media has supported without a flinch. As long as the press doesnt critisize foreign policy then the conservatives wont say 'liberal media.' You conservatives are such fools. I hope these echo chamber pieces from the crazy post make you feel better about yourselves and your conspiracy theories of liberal bias.

2007-02-24 12:53:07 PM
No, the Post is taking the Times to task for a piece of farked-up journalism that created one of the most brutal regimes of the 20th century.

/who's the moran now?

///at least in this case

2007-02-24 12:54:25 PM
Call me weird, but I would think that if you have to look back fifty years to find bias, that would indicate not a terrible track record.

Still, flame on. Now we're marking anniversaries in post dating history.

2007-02-24 12:57:05 PM
Yagottabechittinme-

The brutal regime was the one before Castro.

I really fail to see how Castro's regime has done anything brutal to its people. It has given them great health care and actually gives a crap about them. More than any cuban leader before

Please, the Post is fantastic. Where else can you get that much entertainment for a quarter?

The NYT regularly commits news atrocities, regardless of bias. Very very annoying. It should long ago have been dethroned as the "paper of record".

OTOH, birdcage liner like the Post is as accurate and useful as a stopped clock.

liquidlen: one of the most brutal regimes of the 20th century.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAAA!!! - not even close.

How does that get written and Stalin gets mentioned 5 times, but Batista not once?

But we wouldn't want logic to get in the way of some good, comforting conservative lies, would we?

Not a clue here, TheOther. I was correcting an earlier comment that apparently confused the Post with the Times.

We've got the Daily News in Philly. It's got "attytood "! (pops)
I remember a co-worker throwing a copy in the trash while saying "I've never read this rag before-it's all opinion!" I got a good laugh out of that. Unfortunately, I know lots of folks who get all their "news" from it.

That's not the only thing to which Matthews never caught on.

Ooooh that's awkwaaaaard.

That is the kind of sentence up with which I will not put!

No...I think Castro managed to become revolutionary all himself.

I'm not sure how...but apparently the NYT was rather big in cuba. And all those cubans managed to get their news from the NYT.

And the Post isn't exactly telling the truth...from da wiki!

In the summer of 1955, País's organization merged with the 26th of July Movement of Castro. As Castro's movement gained popular support in the cities and countryside, it grew to over eight hundred men. In mid-1957 Castro gave Che Guevara command of a second column. A journalist, Herbert Matthews from the New York Times, came to interview him in the Sierra Maestra, attracting interest to Castro's cause in the United States. The New York Times front page stories by Matthews presented Castro as a romantic and appealing revolutionary, bearded and dressed in rumpled fatigues.[31][32] Castro and Matthews were followed by the TV crew of Andrew Saint George, said to be a CIA contact person.[33] Through television, Castro's rudimentary command of the English language and charismatic presence enabled him to appeal directly to a U.S. audience.

What Castro may have ment was that he only had 18 people around him...by the time the NYT got there he already had a lot of local support.

The fact of the matter is that Castro was fighting against Bastra...who exiled the democratically elected president of cuba and bowed to US corporate and criminal intrests.

Despite his nobel begining...he just became a worse monster han what he fought.

Remember - there is NO LEFT WING BIAS IN THE NEWS!

Yeah, just like there's no right-wing bias in the New York Post.

Once again the leftists on Fark defend their dictator of choice.

"He wasn't as bad as Batista"

becomes

"He was way better than Batista"

and then...

"He is a wonderful man who cares about his people and gives them free health care (sans any major medical technology)!"

I'm not sure to write this off as ignorance or delusion.

2007-02-24 01:29:29 PM

Damn it! I never knew that newspapers could support people reflecting their internal silly beliefs and that those people could go on to abuse their power. How naive I've been! I'm going to stop buying the New York Times because when I do, I religiously believe everything they say. I've been awoken!

To the rest of the world, Cuba is nothing more than a cheap vacation and a decent cigar. Our obsession with this place is silly. We have normal relations with Vietnam, and they killed over 50,000 Americans. Cut the embargo crap and watch capitalism flatten the revolution in seconds flat.

2007-02-24 02:01:47 PM
Have any of you farkers posting opinions on how horrible Castro is to his people ever actually BEEN to CUBA? Comments on how a goverment treats it's people coming from the land of "rendition" and various post 9/11 laws sound pretty hollow...

The US is so hellbent on maintaining the Cuban embargo and subjecting those people to poverty cause should a socialist nation ever achieve any sort of prosperity it would mean the end of the capitalists grasp on the worlwide economic system. It's like they need to prove it cant work so as to justify their own greed.

I'm not saying Cuba or any other communist nation has ever been a utopic paradise, however, blindly branding them as ebil out of fear and ignorance IS what america has done.

2007-02-24 02:14:25 PM
Because everybody in Cuba has always read the New York Times.
