Just so you know, forked_at_fark, if you touched the camera no matter what you were aiming at and it swayed ever-so-slightly on medium-to-high zoom, you're going to get a picture of something you weren't looking at in the viewfinder. Which I'm almost certain is what happened.

I think by now you should know this. You say it stayed still in the sky, but then you ask, "could it be a satellite/space station/shuttle" -- no. Plus you've got all these overlays and animated gifs now showing you that you caught the halo and pole of a street light.

They up the contrast to show the streetlight in relation to trees on the ground -- backlighting this one, frontlighting that one -- and still you go on about it.

Gort stood back in the deep shadows preparing for the moment. As his visor lifted, a stream of Gort-tears ran from the corner of his visor. He sighed as the annihilation of earth began.

Can someone with skills please photoshop Gort's head around this obvious pic of his visor-shine? Streetlight-bah!

I was on the spaceship in question.

So I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies.

Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about.

But trust me.... You don't.

I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you dont know what you are talking about.

This is how bad info gets passed around.

If you dont know about the topic....Dont make yourself sound like you do.

Cuz some Farkers belive anything they hear.

No, I was using the two second self timer on all the pics, so there is no way I was touching anything.

Then here's what happened. Once you set the timer, the camera moved. Pull away from the viewfinder, don't see that it's moved, *click* there goes your UFO. It happens all the time in photography. It happens to me all the time with a decent SLR and a good tripod. Do not be surprised at what the slightest vibration will do to a high-zoom field of view. A little rumble in the Earth can move your lens far off course and resettle it somewhere else.

Well, it is a very good tripod, cost about 150 euros.
I have never had any movement in any other pictures I have taken.
I took three pics of it and got exactly the same thing.
I saw that weird tail on the pic even before I hit the button to take a delayed picture.

I just took some more pics out there to see if I could get a reflection of a streetlight on lense.
I got nothing like that.

I will post those in a bit, including a movie.

Instead of reading these crazy and uninformed opinions by total strangers, here is what you need to do.

Take all of the images that you have helpfully posted (day and night shots, etc) and take them to a nearby university. Find a photography professor, as well as an astronomy professor. Show them your photos, and ask for their opinions.

(Just kidding, it's already been solved. Au5landsr and tfmcopycat and others proved beyond a shadow of a doubt.)

Still a streetlight - but then you knew that all along

/I'm still not giving you the benefit of the doubt. It is patently obvious to everybody that the object in question is a streetlight. You're just trying to make a name for yourself, even if that name is "idiot".

forked_at_fark: Lurkers, arise !

As a long time lurker (years and years), here's the impression I'm getting:

You caught the wayward reflection of a nearby streetlight in your shot(s), the overlaid images should be proof enough to anyone.

Your steadfast refusal to acknowledge even the possibility of this will enshrine you in the hallowed halls of fark cliches for the remainder of eternity, and for that I applaud you.

Your pics may take their place between domo-kun and mustard guy, and your "ism" can shimmy right in between Duke Sucks and UFIA.

It's a bloody farking streetlight.

Oh, and yes, you have inspired me to get a TF account. I'll make sure to tell Drew that you sold me.
